What would you do to save your people from extinction?
What if your race held the key to mankind’s future?
One Guardian will risk hell to change the future.Descended from the race of Guardians, Turen’s people have survived the last two hundred years, quarantined and isolated. Living in secrecy with no mates and no offspring, they fail to deliver on their ability to replenish and heal human souls through the birth of their Guardian children. Risking his life, Turen chooses capture at the hands of a comrade-turned-enemy to seek answers to change the future.Mia Bowman has no knowledge of the secret Guardian race. Yet, her uncontrollable, nocturnal summons to Turen’s prison cell and her strong sense of justice leave her with little choice but to help him. She can heed his warning and stay clear of his people’s problems or she can ferret out the lies and unravel an ancient tale of murder and deceit. It will take an ultimate sacrifice to stop the unexpected evil and reverse a fatal ending to the Guardian line.

THE GUARDIANS OF EDEN:
A race of beings created in a Sanctum at the far edge of Eden. Co-existing with mankind, they safeguarded human souls and the promise of eternity—until a virus killed all over the age of eighteen. The surviving children fled to the Sanctum for protection, children raising children without the full legacy of their history and knowledge. Two hundred years of solitude have produced a race of semi-immortals fortified with powers and intellect but lacking the mates who will make them whole and allow them to fulfill their covenant with mankind.

Betrayal’s Shadow starts out pretty dark. The first scene takes place in a torture dungeon, where the main character, Turen, stands up against his captors for the first time in months. Turen is a guardian. That means that he’s a supernatural creature and holds the middle between a demon and an angel. Guardians protect humanity, and help them develop as a species. They are immortal until they find their mate, and afterwards lead pretty normal lives. However, finding one’s mate has become a rate thing, and Turen hasn’t met his mate yet. The reason why an immortal creature ended up in a prison where he’s being tortured occassionally, is because Turen left his home world after being quarantained tere for almost two centuries. He leaves Eden because he wants to find out the truth: why one of the guardian leaders went insane. But ever since leaving his home, mistake and betrayal have followed Turen and eventually brought him to this prison.

In the second scene, we meet Mia, the second main character. Mia and Turen find themselves in very different situations, yet you realize right away that at some point their lives will meet and entwine. Mia has the ability to travel to other places when she’s dreaming, and it’s during one of these dream sequences that she meets Turen. Of course the guardian urges Mia to leave and never to return, but Mia is stubborn enough to ignore these pleas and eventually starts on a quest for the truth herself.

I liked Mia and Turen as a couple. There is definitely chemistry between them. I also liked how their relationship developed slowly – I hate it when people randomly fall in love at first sight – and the strong emotions between them made it all the more believable. They help each other grow as people, they give each other hope, and both hold an equal share in the relationship. The romance in this book is superb, and that alone is worth reading. The intriguing storyline, and well-developed characters only add to how interesting Betrayal’s Shadow is. Both of the characters are very strong individually, but when brought together they are invinsible. Turen is willing to sacrifice everything, including his own life. Mia sticks with him, no matter what. That shows the depth of their personality, and the strength of their character.

Betrayal’s Shadow is the first book in the Guardians of Eden series. I will definitely read the second book in the series, >Warrior Reborn. K.H. LeMoyne is now one of my favorite paranormal romance authors, and I look forward to reading more books by this author.

If you’re a fan of a strong paranormal romance with an interesting storyline, intriguing characters that’s fast-paced, an emotional rollercoaster and will keep you glued to your seat, then Betrayal’s Shadow is a great choice.

This book counts towards the Fantasy Challenge and Speculative Romance Challenge.
