Explorer Meriwether Lewis has been stuck in Nowhere since his mysterious death nearly two centuries ago. His last hope for redemption is helping nine-year-old Emmaline Cagney flee her madame mother in New Orleans and find her father in Nashville. To get there, Merry must cross his own grave along the Natchez Trace, where he duels the corrupt Judge, an old foe who has his own despicable plans for Em.

To Live Forever is an inspiring, engaging story about explorer Meriwether Lewis. He’s been stuck in Nowhere since he died over two hundred years ago. He’s on his thirteenth mission to redeem his soul, and is sent to New Orleans of the 1970s where he has to help Emmaline, a 9-year-old girl who was just sold to the highest bidder by her prostitute mother. He offers to help Em finds her father in Nashville. That means crossing his own grave along the Natchez Trace however. Like that’s not bad enough, they’re also chased by the murderous Judge, who has despicable plans for Em.

A lot of things happen along the Natchez Trace, and both Em and Merry grow as characters as the story develops. The story is told from the alternating perspectives of Em, Merry and the Judge. This book is a great example of magical realism that works – this is a difficult genre, but Andra Watkins handles it well. The story is intriguing, and the plot develops with some unexpected twists. The characters are great, but Merry was easily my favorite. The story is fast-paced and the settings are described in great detail.

Recommended to anyone looking for something different. This book is a great choice.

Book Review: Into the Heart of Evil by Joel Babbitt

Book 2 Final Cover for KindleTitle: Into the Heart of Evil

It was supposed to be an easy journey… a simple first step for a band of new warriors.  But evil has an agenda of its own, and relentless conquest strikes when it chooses.  And what can so few do against so many?  Yet evil is not the only power that stirs in the southern valley; from deep in their prophetic past an ancient power also has returned, nurturing, watching, and helping its paladin.  On the anvils of danger and sacrifice Durik and his small group of companions will be forged by the hammer of their mutual hardships into an able band of heroes, but only if they can survive the journey into the heart of evil…

Into the Heart of Evil is the second installment in a fantasy series by Joel Babbitt, with kobolds palying the main parts. Durik and his group of warriors have to prove themselves. I don’t want to give away too much about the plot, considering this is a second in the series, but the story follows the basic good vs. evil story, although there are several shades of grey here. Durk and his friends have to travel into the heart of evil, a journey almost impossible to survive. With lots trials still waiting for them, an ancient power awakens in the southern valley that decides to help the paladin on his journey.

The writing is as amazing and descriptive as in the first installment. I’m still pretty psyched about these main characters being kobolds. The world Joel Babbitt has crafted in his series grows more and more interesting as we discover more about it. Fantasy sometimes lacks interesting characters – by focusing heavily on plot, character development often gets overlooked. Not so here, the characters are each intriguing, and Durik’s personality changes and grows throughout the book. I highly recommend this book to fantasy fans.

Wolfpack Delta gave Ryden Coulter’s life purpose after the attack that not only changed his life, but destroyed his only hope for happiness. While the woman he left behind is always on his mind, he knows that his new-found strength lies in the power of his wolf, not in his heart…or so he thinks.

Being born for the sole purpose of saving another’s life isn’t quite the way one imagines coming into the world, but Carlee O’Shannon knows no other reality. The one time she ever opened her heart, she lost it all. Vowing to never let another person hurt her that way again, she’s unprepared for Ryden to come back into her life.

Together again, out of necessity rather than desire, Ryden and Carlee will be forced to fight not only for their lives, but the lives of Ryden’s unit. Secrets and danger lurk beneath the surface, and it will take more than the strength of a lone wolf and the woman he loves to fight their way out.

I’m usually not a big fan of alpha males, or werewolves, but Wolf’s Heart is a definite exception. Even though Ryden is an alpha male, he doesn’t act like a douchebag (which is usually my problem with alpha males). Carlee was my favorite character though, she’s sassy, she’s intelligent, brave and sometimes surprisingly funny.

Back to the story. Carlee is an FBI agent working on a case that may threaten her life. She’s never had much luck in life. The sole reason her parents wanted her born was so she could save her brother’s life – but when that failed, they rejected her. When she finally fell in love with someone, he broke her heart. Now she’s devoted her life to helping others, but this time around, it gets her in big trouble.

Surprisingly, her ex-boyfriend, Ryden, shows up to save the day. He’s a werewolf and an Elite Delta soldier. He never wanted to hurt Carlee when they were together (yep, he’s the guy who broke her heart) but he had no other choice. Now he’s saved her, but the troubles aren’t over yet. Ryden and Carlee will have to fight for their own lives, and the lives of Ryden’s unit.

I loved the combination of a kick-ass FBI agent and an alpha male werewolf. Both Carlee and Ryden have strong personalities, and they’re not afraid to fight what they believe in. Unfortunately they don’t see how well they match, and spend most of the time bickering and worrying about the past and getting hurt again.

This wasn’t just an insta-romance, and the characters definitely developed throughout the book. The plot was intriguing too, and there were plenty of hot romantic scenes to keep the reader entertained.

Highly recommended to fans of erotic paranormal romance.

Author Bio:

I’d like to be able to say I always wanted to be a writer, but the truth is I thought it looked like a lot of hard work. Life, however, sometimes leads us down paths we never intended to take.

From the very beginning, my parents encouraged my love of books. When a Grade One teacher suggested I wrote too many “thrillers,” my mother, an English teacher, said I could write – and read – whatever I wanted. My high school English teachers later backed her up on that. In university, I received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Anthropology. At the time it was a whim, but it’s amazing how much that little piece of paper has benefited me over the years.Researching the history of civilizations has led to many intriguing worldbuilding possibilities.

When my children were babies and money was tight, my mother, grandmother, and husband bought me an electric typewriter for my birthday because they knew I was bored and wanted me to be happy. My mother became my very first critique partner, willingly reading pages and pages of manuscripts no one should ever have to suffer through. She researched markets for me, and introduced me to a journalist friend, who in turn introduced me to the Writers Federation of Nova Scotia. My brother and my brother-in-law introduced me to Thieves’ World, David Eddings, and Piers Anthony. My sister gave me my first computer.

My grandmothers believed if something’s too hard, you aren’t working hard enough. My brother and sisters have all successfully followed their dreams, and my husband and two sons offer me proof every day that hard work is something to be embraced, not avoided. With these people behind me, how could I possibly stray from a path on which life seems to have planted them as guardrails?

Synopsis:

As a highly skilled assassin, Creed is used to being called upon by the Godseekers for help. But in a world just recently rid of demons, the task to now track down half-demons isn’t as easy as it seems. Not only is Creed himself a secret half-demon now going against his own kin, but when he discovers numerous innocent children are being kidnapped in the mountains, he second guesses his mission. Justice should be for all, not just for demon spawn. Living in a world of cruel men, Nieve has no memory of her life before her enslavement. But when Creed comes around asking questions about missing children, the memories of her half-demon son – and the demon who tricked her – come flooding back. Now, Nieve will do anything to get her son back…even if it means putting her trust in Creed. Together they set out to find the Demon Slayer who can help them. Little do they know the demon who fathered Nieve’s son is also searching for Nieve, and he’s teamed up with the kidnapper to draw her out.  Creed and Nieve must race against the clock to save the children, their hearts, and the world.

But with her promising career back in Boston, can Carly really afford to lose her heart in Italy?

I love Italy, and I’m dying to go on a holiday, so of course I had to read An American Girl in Italy.

Aubrie Dionne has a great writing style, and the ability to capture a character’s essence in a few short paragraphs. Carly Davis, the main character, is in love with her career. She’s an ambitious musician playing for the Easthampton Civic Symphony. Music is her life. She lives and breathes music. Which means that unlike any other sane human being, she doesn’t want to go to Italy. Even though she’s sightseeing some of the most amazing places on earth, she can’t bring herself to enjoy it.

That is, until tour guide Michelangelo shows up. With a name like Michelangelo, this guy has to be a romantic for sure. He’s dark, charismatic, mysterious, and he and Carly have almost-instant chemistry. His personality is very different from Carly’s, but at the same time, they form an interesting match.

I also liked the secondary characters, especially the Italian locals, and the members of Carly’s symphony. Sometimes it was hard to keep them apart, but it was entertaining to see them from Carly’s point of view. Carly was my favorite character, because I could relate to her – not to the point that I’d miss out on a trip through Italy, but I understood why she did certain things, and why she let ambition get the best of her most of the time.

With great writing and an intriguing set of characters, and vivid descriptions of the settings, Aubrie Dionne has written an entertaining contemporary romance, ideal for the summer holidays, and a recommended read to anyone who wants to escape ordinary life for a while, and picture themselves strolling through Italy.

America is the land of the beautiful, but it is also a land of mystery and many haunted and bizarre places. With 150 images, addresses, and directions, go state-by-state to tour the macabre side of the United States. Journey to haunted old battleships, abandoned prisons, creepy lunatic asylums, the Amityville Horror House, the Winchester House, museums such as Edgar Allan Poe’s home, New Orleans Voodoo Museum, the Lizzie Borden Bed and Breakfast, and much more! In addition suggesting places to visit, where to stay, and places to eat, chapters on each state have a break down of how best to experience the curious and bizarre sometimes just a building and other times a whole town. Come on this unusual but richly satisfying tour. You won’t be disappointed.

Eerie America is a travel guide of the macabre. The author takes the reader on a ride through America, through all the States, and stops by to visit the most macabre spots out there. With beautiful photographs and an atmospheric layout design, this is a great guide for people wanting to experience the more macabre side of the United States.

However, as a person more interested in the hauntings than the traveling itself, I found the book lacking depth and detail in regards to the hauntings. For example, the book would mention an inn was haunted by a ghost named Mary, but there would be no history on the ghost, no eyewitness account, no evidence. And with thousands of ghosts named Mary (seriously, half of the time, the ghosts mentioned in the book, were called Mary), it quickly became repetitive. I would’ve preferred if the author focused on a few locations in detail, like say, one or two locations per state.

But if you want a quick guide for haunted locations across the states, then this book definitely works. It’s organized by state, and each state has a recommended place to stay and place to eat.

Book Tours: Guest Post Guardians Inc.

I’m hosting a guest post today for the tour for “Guardians, Inc”. I’ll leave the word to Julian Rosado-Machain, author of this YA fantasy adventure.

Guest Post

Guardians Inc 7Hello everyone!

And thank you Majanka so much for letting us hijack your blog for Guardians Inc. business… I am not going to bore you with the story of Guardians Inc. or what we do… Chances are you wouldn’t believe me anyway, and it’s kind of boring so, dum… dum… dum…. Magic in the real world! Where to start?

I know!

ELVES in College! Yeah! That’s the ticket!

Elves live in their pristine cities and kingdoms inside our national parks. (Eidameran in Mendocino California is probably the largest one), but they are not the sylvan lot they used to be and that are still portrayed in the movies and books. No, they have evolved with the times and now the Elven families are sending their young to be educated in human universities.

Remember the cute girl that spent most of the classes by herself and that would not attend any party? The one with the long hair that never wanted to show her ears in public? Probably as elven as the guy with the perfect skin that became the lone surfer on the weekends that always wore a beanie hat, even in the water…

They are cute but they are also aloof and, at least among humans, loners…. Can’t blame them though, they live from hundreds to thousands of years so they don’t really want a relationship with humans.

Or so most of them say, but there are some out there, some that are in college for their fifth or sixth degree that really know how to party and that don’t mind hanging out with humans. I’ve never been invited one of those parties, but I’m hopeful… and now that you know that they are around I hope you do get to attend one of those parties.

If you do, please invite me.

Now, the ad: If you want to know a little bit more of that magical world just around the corner of your house take a visit to www.guardians inc.com or join us at www.facebook.com/Guardians.Incorporated

Elves are just the tip of the iceberg!

And with that we return control of the blog to Majanka!
Cheers and happy reading,

Julian Rosado-Machain

About the Book

GUARDIANS INC.: THE CYPHER is two stories in one. A glimpse into a multinational company that is in reality the oldest of secret societies, one that spans close to seven thousand years of existence, weaving in and out of history, guiding and protecting humanity from creatures and forces that most of us believe are only mythology and fairy tales.

The other is the story of Thomas Byrne, a young man thrust into secrets he shouldn’t be aware of and dangers he shouldn’t face but, that he ultimately will, for he is a Cypher. The only one who can steer humanity’s future.
The ultimate conspiracy theory is that Magic is real. Kept in check by technology but, every five hundred years the balance can shift and, if it does, technology will fail and those creatures we’ve driven into myth will come back with a vengeance.
To protect the present, Guardians Incorporated needs to know the future, and to unlock the future they need a Cypher.

This is the first book of the Guardians Inc Series.
