What if you could tune your TV to the year 1963, and watch—live? A new theme park attraction allows visitors to not only observe, but talk with the people of that turbulent decade. For 16-year-old Amy, it’s the perfect escape from her own time, and the hardships of teenage life in the 21st century.

Things get complicated when Amy falls for a teenage boy in the 60s. Trying to build a relationship across time proves maddening, especially when computers bleep any language that might impact the future. Happily, Amy acquires a “magic clicker” which defeats this annoying restriction. But gaining the ability to speak freely comes with a heavy responsibility: Amy now has the power to alter history!

She struggles to be mindful of her speech, but finds the temptation to reverse the mistakes of the past irresistible. It is November, 1963 on the other side of the TV screen, and President Kennedy is about to be assassinated. Knowing the details of that tragic event, Amy hatches a dangerous plot to save the 35th president, unaware of the deadly consequences facing her long-ago friend, who must carry it out.

In The Age of Amy: Channel ’63, 16-year-old Amy’s world is turned upside down when a new theme park attractoin allows visitors to talk to people living in the eighties, in 1963 to be exact. Amy loves the new invention, and sees it as an excellent way to escape the troubles of her own time. Except then she falls in love with a teenage boy from the sixties. But thanks to the restriction on what they can talk about (anything that may predict the future gets bleeped out), Amy has trouble telling her crush all her feelings. Luckily, she acquires a magic clicker than can get by the restrictions, but that also gives her hte power to change history…And with president Kennedy about to be assassinated, Amy comes up with a plot to save the president, even though it might have disastrous consequences for her new friend.

In a book that screams originality and creativity, author Bruce Edwards brings us the newest installment in “The Age of Amy” series, and my favorite so far. Amy is really starting to grow as a character – intelligent, witty and resourceful, she grows more interesting with each book. Her world grows increasingly complex too, yet it still holds that whimsical, playful touch.

The writing is engaging, the characters are complex and fun, and overall, the story is very enjoyable. Recommended to anyone who enjoys YA.

About the Book

Cover Birthday SMALL 140928Title: Birthday Experience
Author: Simone Freier
Genre: Erotic Contemporary Romance
Beyond 50 Shades … Way Beyond!
BIRTHDAY EXPERIENCE is an intimate exploration of kinks and fetishes by an unlikely couple, with thoughtful and philosophical discussion by the characters, and graphic descriptions of their erotic adventures.
Kelly’s birthday party promises to be an epic event for Sam, Kelly and a few of Kelly’s closest friends.  An atmosphere of openness and adventure leads to new sensual experiences for everyone.  Sam has planned some games that will push the limits of the guests, and a special role-play performance will take Kelly beyond her dreams and to the edge of her courage.  Fantasy and reality meld into a surreal experience, as Kelly opens her friends’ eyes to new possibilities.  And they surprise her with their openness.  Kelly’s birthday is a celebration of intimacy, trust and love among friends.
The Experiences series is an epic love story of erotic relationships and sexual desires.  Written in a ‘literary realism’ style, the series introduces Sam in the prequel, and the blossoming of his intimate relationship with Kelly as the series progresses.  Fantasies and real-world adventures coalesce to mold a unique bond between unlikely lovers.  Where needs are mutually satisfied in an open, creative and trusting environment.  Where physical and mental boundaries are pushed.  Where the concepts of love and sex are never confused, but sometimes confusing.  Where openness is required and intimacy is expected.  And where fair-is-fair, regarding the punishment of transgressions.
Contemporary erotic romance: Suitable for mature readers, aged 18+ years.
Experiences:  Book 4 is 104,000 words, 19 chapters, 345 print pages

Author Bio

SimoneFace Small 140811An adventuress and traveler, Simone is a sensual being who loves to read stories that excite her.  She takes exception to authors who promote their works as ‘dirty’, ‘filthy’, or ‘smutty’:  She believes that sex is wonderful in all of its incarnations, and doesn’t shy away from graphic descriptions of realistic sexual experiences, no matter how messy.  Her writing is mainly in the ‘literary realism’ style – i.e., it is wild (even outrageous) … but could really happen to you!  She values openness in relationships, and demonstrates this through her characters.
Prior to becoming an author, Simone was a nurse.  One of her pet peeves is reading erotica that gets simple anatomy wrong!  She is continually bewildered by women who haven’t explored their own bodies.  Another pet peeve is the mostly hung-up Victorian society prevalent in the U.S. and U.K., and she tries to do her part to change that by introducing people to new sexual and sensual experiences through her erotic writing.  The activities in Simone’s books are quite realistic, as she has participated in most of these in ‘real life’, as surreal as it may seem.
Simone is currently completing the Experiences series, which will run an estimated 1,000,000 words!  That is why she refers to it as an ‘epic’ romance, although each volume is intended to stand on its own, with a ‘happy for now’ ending.  Experiences combines literary style and philosophical discussion by the characters with graphic portrayal of sex in all of its kinks and fetishes.  You may not like all of the things Simone’s characters do … but neither do they.  Their exploration of new experiences will hopefully motivate some readers to explore their own sexuality to a greater extent.
Simone loves to hear from her readers, so feel free to contact her.   In fact, she hopes you will feel ‘free’ sexually and spiritually, as well.  Please follow her on social media and her blog.  On her website, you may interact directly with the main characters in her books, including asking them questions in order to understand their perspectives in more depth.

Book Review: Divine Scales by Jennifer Blackstream

Author: Jennifer Blackstream
Genre: Fantasy Romance
Age Group: Adult
Rating: 5 stars

A warrior with a hunger for sin . . .

Driven by a terrible hunger for the black souls of evil men, Patricio, divine executioner of the gods, patrols the kingdom with blood on his hands and ice in his heart. The families of his victims sing his praises–the result of a witch’s cruel curse that condemns him to be forever surrounded by false adulation. When the curse sours the first hint at romance Patricio has had since becoming the king’s heir, his rage is all consuming. Disgusted, he leaves the mermaid in the sea and returns to the palace…only to be shocked when she bargains for the legs to follow him.

A mermaid out of her element . . .

Marcela’s world has been turned upside-down–literally. Once a proud member of her father King Triton’s royal guard, she’s now the victim of an angel’s curse. Enchanted into false adoration bordering on obsession, she traded her tail–and her voice–to the sea witch for the legs she needed to pursue the object of her desire. In a cruel twist of fate, the very magic that gave her the means to pursue her passion also broke the spell that caused it. Now she’s in the angel’s arms, but how can either of them trust the desire churning inside them when so much magic has muddied the waters?

Trust isn’t easy when nothing is as it seems . . .

A mermaid with legs and no singing voice. An angel with a curse. A witch with a chip on her shoulder. The world is full of magic and mayhem, and for an angel and a mermaid, it will take more than a kiss to balance…the Divine Scales.

In Divine Scales, Patricio might be an angel, but he’s definitely not angel. He yearns for the souls of evil-doers, but the families of his victims sing his praises because of a witch’s curse. The story offers an intriguing spin on the Little Mermaid fairytale, intriguing characters and a well-executed premise. Patricio is a complicated character, hard to connect with at first, but once you get to know him better, he turns out to be not as bad as one would think.

Marcela starts out as your typical love-struck heroine, but once you figure out that her over-the-top obsession is due to a spell, it turns all the more intriguing. Kind of like in the Little Mermaid, she trades her tail and voice to the sea witch, in exchange for the legs she needs to walk on land. But this magic also caused the witch’s curse that enchanted her in the first place, to be broken.

I can honestly say this book has one of the most original premises I’ve ever read. Angels and mermaids? That’s a first. And then the whole spin on the Little Mermaid, one of my all-time favorite fairytales (although the original always makes me cry). The writing is sublime. Both main characters are equally complex and intriguing, and the romance between them is sizzling. The drama is real here, not over-the-top exaggerated like in some romance novels. The character’s feelings sound realistic. The plot offered quite a few surprises.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good romance story with plenty of fantasy elements thrown in, and heaps of creativity.

My mini-irons,

I urge you to embrace the goose-spell of Animal Farm and you will find sanctuary when our difficult war is over. I will add, of course, that given that conquering the world means a long, long, long, long, long war, I will permit you to read another book every now and again.

Just remember which books are bleak-listed; e.g. Barry Potterer, 100 Years of Silly Tudor, Prude and Perjury, The Hungary Olympic Games, The Chronicles of Nerdia and Of Mike and Ben.

In the meantime, here is a list of books I have vetted and will reconsider for approval if the appro… apprap… proper changes are made. Read this manyule carefully mini-irons.

Your Cat-tain

Charlie Brown

Oh my God. What can I say about The Bleaklisted Books except that it’s AMAZING? This is one of the most original, laugh-out-loud hilarious books I’ve ever read. Charlie Brown is a cat who likes reading literature and giving comments about it, and bleaklisting several books, like Barry Potterer, Prude and Perjury, The Hungary Olympic Games and more. Other books however, are almost approved by this literature-savvy cat.

It’s hard to describe this book because it’s just so unique. I would recommend it to anyone who loves to read, and who wants to view literature from the unique and hilarious perspective of a cat.

Happily ever after? It doesn’t exist.

I wore the big white dress and rode off with Prince Charming. Then Charming changed his mind.

These days, I don’t put my heart in anyone’s hands because I don’t even know where I’ve left it.

So when a ruggedly handsome, blue-eyed man stirs my desires awake for the first time in years, I tell myself it’s a one-time thing.

And now? I’m hooked. Nothing could prepare me for Leo. He weaves simple, deliberate movements into pure, gilded pleasure. Like a sensual alchemist.

I’m so blinded by lust I barely notice the gaping hole opening underneath me, the one that’s sure to swallow me down. Because every time I’ve dared to get close to someone, they’ve cracked me wide open.

Why should this time be any different?

In Entangle, we meet with Alexis Stone, a successful business woman running her own business who, unfortunately wasn’t as lucky in love as she’s been in business. After a messy divorce, she swears off love for a while, deciding she might as well spend the rest of her life on her own. Leo Conrad is one of her employees, very handsome, but unfortunately not quite lucky in love either, as he had his heart broken in the past, and is now being stalked by a crazy ex.

Alexis and Leo have an almost tangible attraction between them, and from one thing comes another, and they hook up. It starts off as casual sex for both of them, at least that’s how they intended it, but it doesn’t stay with that. Instead of going away, the attraction between them only grows, and they start becoming almost addicted to one another.

The romance was steamy, and for the first part of the book, very enjoyable to read about. Then the drama got added in, and I enjoyed reading about how both characters dealt with it in ways that were consistent with their personality: Leo going all alpha male, and Alexis falling into her old insecurities. It was like they went right back to the start, and then had to work to find each other again. It was a good move, showing that love isn’t always easy, and sometimes you have to struggle through things to get there.

Both characters were engaging, but Alexis was my favorite of the two of them. The secondary characters were all right too. The writing worked, and the story was entertaining.

As she grew older she realized her talents lay in academics and business and for the last several years has been a business consultant and college professor where she uses the analytical side of her brain and not the side that makes up stories.

Through all her career choices she has continued to have a passion for writing. This stemmed from childhood whereas an only child she developed a vivid imagination spending most of her time making things up and thinking the Incredible Hulk lived in her closet.

Proud of her vast experiences in life from barrel racing to being on the dance team for a semi pro basketball team to being a mom of 2 amazing kids, she tells her family and friends that no one is safe from their escapades slipping in to her books.

Mini-Review: Above World, Allegiance, Halflings

Time for some mini-reviews! What are mini-reviews, you ask? As the title suggests, these are short reviews, consisting of one paragraph tops, about a book. It’s a way to catch up on the books I’ve read a while ago, but never got around to reviewing.

Above World

Title: Above World

Author: Jenn Reese

Genre: Middle Grade, Fantasy, Dystopian

Rating: 4 stars

Purchase: Amazon

Thirteen-year-old Aluna has lived her entire life under the ocean with the Coral Kampii in the City of Shifting Tides. But after centuries spent hidden from the Above World, her colony’s survival is in doubt. The Kampii’s breathing necklaces are failing, but the elders are unwilling to venture above water to seek answers. Only headstrong Aluna and her friend Hoku are stubborn and bold enough to face the terrors of land to search for way to save their people.

But can Aluna’s warrior spirit and Hoku’s tech-savvy keep them safe? Set in a world where overcrowding has led humans to adapt—growing tails to live under the ocean or wings to live on mountains—here is a ride through a future where greed and cruelty have gone unchecked, but the loyalty of friends remains true.

Review: I saw this advertized as young adult, but it’s more a middle grade read. The plot is intriguing. Aluna is a lovely character – strong, independent, clever. The pacing never stops – Aluna and her best friend Hoku tumble from one fight, kidnapping, and mystery into another. The book is highly creative, and the writing is great.

Title: Allegiance (Legacy #0)

Author: Cayla Kluver

Genre: Fantasy, Romance, Young Adult

Rating: 4 stars

Purchase: Amazon

Only I saw Narian for who he truly was: a young man with courage and an independent mind, and made to pay for what was outside his control. He couldn’t help his past any more than he could help the way those intense, deep-blue eyes pierced me and held me captive.

An eighteen-year-old queen in love with the enemy as their countries pass the point of no return…

Bound to a man she cannot love, Queen Alera of Hytanica must forget Narian, the young man who holds her heart. For Narian is destined to conquer Hytanica at the behest of his master, the powerful magic-user known as the Overlord. Alera doesn’t truly believe Narian will fight against Hytanica-until Cokyrian troops attack with Narian commanding the charge.

Faced with the greatest betrayal a heart can know, Alera must set aside personal feelings and lead her kingdom through its darkest time. And when all hope, will and courage seem lost, she must find strength and remember that even the blackest night must have a dawn….

Review: Sometimes sequels suffer from second book syndrom, but that wasn’t the case at all in this novel. Allegiance is an interesting story about an eighteen-year-old queen, Alera, who is in love with Narian. He’s the enemy of her kingdom, but the true captor of her heart. The writing is rich and absorbing, the characters are intriguing, and the world building is complex. Alera was a fantastic character, and Narian was one of the most intriguing love interests I’ve read about. A fantastic book.

Title: Halflings

Author: Heather Burch

Genre: Young Adult, Paranormal Romance

Rating: 3 stars

Purchase: Amazon

After being inexplicably targeted by an evil intent on harming her at any cost, seventeen-year-old Nikki finds herself under the watchful guardianship of three mysterious young men who call themselves halflings. Sworn to defend her, misfits Mace, Raven, and Vine battle to keep Nikki safe while hiding their deepest secret—and the wings that come with. A growing attraction between Nikki and two of her protectors presents a whole other danger. While she risks a broken heart, Mace and Raven could lose everything, including their souls. As the mysteries behind the boys powers, as well as her role in their earthly mission, unfold, Nikki is faced with choices that will affect the future of an entire race of heavenly beings, as well as the precarious equilibrium of the earthly world.

Review: The writing is rich and creative, but the story itself was rather predictable. Nikki wasn’t as interesting as I hoped she’d be. We’re left in the dark about why Nikki needs all this special protection for quite a while, and while the pacing of the story is generally fast, the mystery part was too slow. The love triangle wasn’t convincing at all, and I was left with mixed feelings about this book.

Book Review: Kristin’s Ghost by Wayne A.D. Kerr

Kristins-ghost-1600x2400Title: Kristin’s Ghost (The X+Y Files #2)

Night after night a strange apparition appears at Kristin’s bedside. Is it dangerous? Is the dancing spirit trying to send her a message?

When Xander and Yzzie discover that their friend is being haunted, the seventh graders make it their number one priority to solve the mystery of Kristin’s Ghost.

The truth will surprise them all!.

After the adventures in Monsters and Miracles, I looked forward to reading the sequel, Kristin’s Ghost. The book certainly didn’t dissapoint. If anything, I loved it even more than the previous book in the series. Xander and Yzzie are back for more fun and mayhem, and this time they’ve been teamed up with Yzzie’s friend, Kristin, who gets visited every night by a ghost she’s named Cassandra. Kristin is reluctant to share her story, but when she hears Xander has been bullied before because he believed he saw an UFO, she’s more willing to open up. Kristin tells them about her ghostly visitor, who appears at the exact same time every nine, twenty minutes past one.

Kristin used to be afraid of the ghost, but she’s not anymore, she’s gotten used to it. If anything, she wants to find out who Cassandra is, and why she’s haunting her. Xander, Yzzie and Kristin team up to find out the truth about the ghost. I felt a connection to all of the characters right away – Xander and Yzzie because I got to know them in the previous book, and Kristin because the book starts out by introducing her to the reader, and makes it easy to establish a connection with her.

All the characters were well-rounded and intriguing enough to keep middle graders (and even adults) entertained. The writing was great, as in the previous book, and overall the story held a few surprising twists, and was fast-paced and engaging.

After a lifetime of traveling, she settled down and knew her time had come to write. Diving into her new career like she does everything else, with enthusiasm, research and a lot of prayers, she had her first book published in June of 2011. As a full-time writer, stay at home mother, and wife, there’s never a dull moment in her household.

She weaves her tales in spare moments and the evenings with a cup of coffee or tea at her side and the characters in her head for company.  A self-professed rebel with a pen. Her goal is to diversify romance as she continues to genre hop, and offer up strong female characters.
