Herman watches in horror as his cousin and a friend are arrested by the SA. As a Jew, he realizes it is past time to flee his homeland, a decision that catapults him from one adventure to another, his life changed forever by the storm of world events.  Part coming-of-age story, part immigrant tale, part World War II adventure, Immigrant Soldier, The Story of a Ritchie Boy follows Herman as he evolves from a frightened and frustrated teenager looking for a place to belong into a confident and caring US Army Intelligence officer serving in the Third Army.  The reader is swept along as the hero experiences fear, romance, loyalty, disappointment, friendship, and compassion in his quest for an understanding of hate and forgiveness.

Immigrant Soldier: The Story of a Ritchie Boy is the story of Herman, a young Jew, who sees his cousin and friend being arrested by the SA and decides he has to flee his home if he wants to survive this upcoming war. This decision turns his life around completely, as he leaves the country and tries to craft a future for himself. He becomes a Ritchie Boy, a US Army Intelligence Officer belonging to a special regiment called the “Ritchie Boys”, consisting mostly of German-speaking immigrants to the US, most of them fellow Jews. Knowing the language and customs makes ihm perfect for this job. But the harshness of war also has a profound influence on him, and as he tries to make sense of everything that’s happening – the hate sweeping through humanity, the power of forgiving those who’ve wronged you – he might find a way to forgive the people who hurt him.

This is a powerful story, and Herman is an engaging and fascinating character. The book is quite long, but it didn’t feel that long. Immediately, I felt like I belonged in the world of Herman, and I could connect with him right away. The story is at times raw and painful, at times inspiring and thought-provoking. The writing makes the characters and plot shine, and ultimately, it’s an excellent historical read.

Italy 1899: Fiery-tempered, erotic medium Alessandra Poverelli levitates a table at a Spiritualist séance in Naples. A reporter photographs the miracle, and wealthy, skeptical, Jewish psychiatrist Camillo Lombardi arrives in Naples to investigate. When she materializes the ghost of his dead mother, he risks his reputation and fortune to finance a tour of the Continent, challenging the scientific and academic elite of Europe to test Alessandra’s mysterious powers. She will help him rewrite Science. His fee will help her escape her sadistic husband Pigotti and start a new life in Rome. Newspapers across Europe trumpet her Cinderella story and baffling successes, and the public demands to know – does the “Queen of Spirits” really have supernatural powers?

Nigel Huxley is convinced she’s simply another vulgar, Italian trickster. The icy, aristocratic detective for England’s Society for the Investigation of Mediums launches a plot to trap and expose her. The Vatican is quietly digging up her childhood secrets, desperate to discredit her supernatural powers; her abusive husband Pigotti is coming to kill her; and the tarot cards predict catastrophe.

Praised by Kirkus Reviews as an “enchanting and graceful narrative” that absorbs readers from the very first page, The Witch of Napoli masterfully resurrects the bitter 19th century battle between Science and religion over the possibility of an afterlife.

Praise for The Witch of Napoli

“Impressive…an enchanting, graceful narrative that absorbs readers from the first page.” -Kirkus Reviews

Mythopoetic reflections from a contemporary Persephone.

Persephone & Me is an inspiring collection of women’s poetry by author Corinne Desjardins. The book focuses a lot on women’s issues and on the quest to find one’s own self, one’s deeper, inner self. I loved the poems in this collection – they’re all quality work, and a pleasure to read. I would recommend this collection to all poetry fans.

How to Write a Book (even if you never have) is the brainchild of Now Novel co-founder Bridget McNulty – a culmination of all the advice and tips she’s been sharing with the Now Novel writing community over the last year. It’s a fantastically helpful resource for anyone wanting to write their first book, a guide for all those who love writing and want to tackle the Mount Everest of writing projects (a novel) and a reference for writers at any stage of their careers who need reminding of the building blocks of novel-writing: ideas, mood, theme, plot, setting and characters. It’s also, quite simply, a great read.
Find out more about the Now Novel online novel-writing process at

How to Write a Book (even if you never have) is, like the title suggests, a book about writing books. It’s actually a very thorough book, focusing on different aspects of writing, finding various strategies to come up with ideas, to develop a plot, work on your characters, find a theme/genre for your book, making sure your book isn’t a cliché, and so on. For newbie writers, it’s an invaluable resource.

However – I’m not a newbie writer. I’ve written ten books and counting (although, admittingly, a few shorter children’s books), so the challenge was, for me, if this book would be interesting, or if it was aimed solely at newbies, as most books of this kind are. This book proved a pleasant surprise though. Even for an author who knows the drill, the book manages to inspire, offer some new ideas and fresh ways to come up with plots and characters. What I thought was particularly interesting was chapter seven, which focuses on motivation and discipline. That’s probably the most important chapter for me – I always find some way to convince myself I don’t have time to write. Staying motivated is tough, but the strategies in the book sound solid. I might have to try them out.

The book also offers self-publishing advice, which is awesome too. I especially liked the article about distributing self-published books, and on how to make money from your book. With so many new books out there every day, it’s tough to stand out from the crowd and this book offers some great pointers.

If you’re a newbie writer or a veteran, you’ll find something useful within the pages of this book, I guarantee it. The writing style is fluent and to the point, and it makes an engaging read.

Book Excerpt

“Wow. You’re a vision, you know that?” He practically drools all over. She wears a pair of blue jeans and a low cut green sweater with a white scarf wrapped around her neck. Her hair is up, and she wears light make up.

She chuckles. “Like what you see?” She smirks at him, daunting him. The little vixen can come out and play when she wants and he is enjoying this side of the sexy Gracelynn.

He decides to play dirty himself. “Want to see how happy I am to see you?” He smirks back at her. “Let’s make a wager, shall we?” he asks competitively.

She grins at him. She intently twirls a strand of her hair that she left down by her face between her fingers, licks her lips and stares at him. She looks him up and down, making him even more drawn to her.

He gulps. The damn vixen knows how to play dirty.

“Well, what is the wager? Because if it is staring at each other all night, I could do that and then some.”

Genre: Contemporary Romance

From her early teens, ballet has been an integral part of Jillian Russell’s life. One by one, she loses her parents, grandparent, husband and child. If being alone in the world wasn’t bad enough, a medical diagnosis takes away her chance to become a prima ballerina.

Knowing a part of her will die if she walks away from ballet, she changes her focus and builds a ballet company and opens a dance school. This endeavor takes all her resources and leaves no time to build new relationships outside her world of dance. Jillian rationalizes if she doesn’t build relationships, she can’t be deserted. And she’s not sure she would survive another loss.

Handsome trauma surgeon, Alan Armstrong has relocated to Charlotte, North Carolina for a fresh start. Until a few years ago, he had always envisioned his future to include a wife and children. But after his father died in a plane crash from lack of medical attention, his focus for the future has shifted to equip himself professionally to set up a rural clinic. A supporter of the arts, Alan finds himself on the board of the North Carolina Ballet Company. He has always had a penchant for fixing things. Realizing Jillian’s professional life could use some help, it is not long before he realizes he is drawn to her romantically as well.

They fall in love, but when Alan discovers Jillian has been misdiagnosed, he tells her she must decide between their love or a performance career in ballet.

In To Dance One More Day, Jillian Russell is obsessed with ballet. She has been ever since she was a kid. And when she loses her parents, grandparent, her husband and her child, and ends up all alone in the world, ballet offers the only solace. But then a medical diagnosis ruins her opportunity of becoming a prima ballerina, and her world is shattered yet again. Although it hurts her, she knows she can’t give up on ballet or she’d have nothing left. So she builds a ballet company, and opens up a dance school, which takes all the money she has, and leaves her little time to worry about anything besides the company. But she doesn’t mind that though, as long as she doesn’t get close to anyone, she can’t get hurt again.

Alan Armstrong is a trauma surgeon. He relocated to a small town to get a fresh start after his dad died in a plane crash due to lack of medical attention. He wants to set up a rural clinic and help people out, instead of living for his ambitions. He’s always admired the arts though, so when he gets an opportunity to be part of Jillian’s dance company, he takes it. Before he realizes it, he’s in for a lot more than he bargained for when he falls in love with Jillian. But can Jillian find the strength to open her heart again? And when Alan finds out Jillian was misdiagnosed, will that ruin their relationship?

This book is one intense rollercoaster, I’ll tell you that. I was on the verge of tears more often than I could count. Poor Jillian. She went through so much! Life really gave her a bad bargain. My heart broke for her. I understood her struggling with the pain, why she couldn’t let anyone come close, her fears. She was raw, realistic, like a real person. She had so much history, so much personality, I felt an instant connection to her.

Alan is intriguing too. He turned his life around, he doesn’t give up no matter what, he’s caring and a genuinely nice person. The two of tem together, well, that’s fireworks. Seriously, I wanted fireworks to go off when they finally decided they’d fallen for each other. They deserve that.

An amazing contemporary romance. Fans of the genre will devour it. The author is extremely talented and knows how to craft a good story. I can’t wait to see what she writes next.

Author: Peggy Barnett

Genre: Science-Fiction, Erotica

He calls himself the Prince. He is humanoid but not human–fascinating, sensual, at the cusp of maturity, and accustomed to getting what he wants. And Lydia has awoken in his world to find that she has been given to him–as a pet, a plaything, and, if he so desires, a lover.

But the Prince lives in a world where birth order dictates gender, and in declaring himself male he has thrown tradition back into the face of his father, the King, a very, very dangerous creature to cross.

As Lydia comes to realize that the Prince is as much a prisoner to his culture’s ways as she is, her resentment slowly unfurls into pity, understanding, curiosity, and a deep, unpredictable, consuming lust. She wants him too, on her own terms. But in a world fraught with hidden dangers, her terms are not open for discussion, not when their thirst for one another could doom them both. In a court where monarchs are obeyed and sexual hierarchies are strict, one wrong move could end the Prince for ever… and what would happen to Lydia then?

Book Tours: Book Spotlight A Pirate Looks at Forty

One Particular Harbour

A working vacation in the Virgin Islands… what could be better? But when you are Jake Sullivan, things are never as they seem, and a mysterious nighttime meeting leads to a nightmare of a morning.

Arrested for the murder of a prominent businessman, Jake finds himself the object of a conspiracy to take away everything he has as one piece of evidence after another builds the case against him.

Jake’s best friend, Mike Lang, comes to his aid and his investigation reveals that Jake is to be transferred to an island prison from which there will be no return and arranges an escape with the help of some island characters found only in the southern latitudes.

Now fugitives, Jake and Mike follow clues from island to island pursued by corrupt police and politicians and an international oil cabal and its team of hit-men, as they race to find answers as to who is framing Jake and why.

A Pirate Looks at Forty

22465240When a retired United States Senator’s passion for deep-sea treasure hunting off the coast of Palm Beach leads to murder, Jake Sullivan, Chief Prosecutor for the Justice Department in Miami, thinks he has an open and shut case: the DNA of the man pulled out of the warm waters near the ill-fated yacht, matches blood found on the deck. But life is never so simple for Jake.

In a rush of political maneuvering, Jake’s suspect is whisked away by the State Department under a claim of diplomatic immunity. The mystery man is no simple treasure thief; he is a covert operator for the Mossad, Israel’s elite intelligence agency.

But, Jake and his investigator, Mike Lang, are no less committed to solving the murders of Senator Daniel Simmons and his wife.

Their instincts are piqued when information leads them to the writings of an ancient Hebrew mystic and the lore behind an iconic relic of Medieval Spain lost in 1715 when a hurricane wrecked a Spanish treasure fleet off the Florida coast.

But those findings are less bizarre than their uncovering of an Israeli army faction intent on realizing a dream of a “Greater Israel.” Discovering the identity of the mysterious leader of “The Group of 40” becomes more than a quest to solve a murder investigation. Jake and Mike hope to prevent South Florida from becoming a war zone, and the fuse that could light the powder keg that is the Middle East.
