About the Book

Title: The Matriarch Matrix

Author: Maxime Trencavel

Genre: Science Fiction, Adventure

The Matriarch Matrix – A speculative fiction novel of origins, faith, passion, and the pursuit of peace.

It was always his destiny to save her. It was always her destiny to die. The fate of the world hangs on their choices…

The past foretells her future…

What does it take to change a loving child of peace into an assassin for a dangerous and powerful oligarch? Zara Khatum knows. Once a fighter for her Kurdish people, the memory of the atrocities inflicted by her captors has Zara seeking one thing: vengeance. But the voices of the ancients call to Zara. In the past, in another life, she knew the secrets of the artifact…

Twelve thousand years ago…

She is Nanshe, revered matriarch of the family she led away from the monsters of the north. In the land that would one day mark the treacherous border between Turkey and Syria, she created the temples at Gobleki Tepe and founded a dynasty, heirs to a powerful object. For millennia, Nanshe’s descendants have passed down the legend of the artifact: “The object can save. But only a man and woman together can guide the salvation of others.”

Heirs to destiny…

By fate or destiny, Zara is thrown in with Peter Gollinger, a quirky Californian from the other side of the world and the other side of everything she believes. But he, too, is heeding the voices of his ancestors. Joined by Jean-Paul, a former Jesuit priest, these three people—from wildly different religions and cultures—must find a way to work together to solve a twelve thousand-year-old mystery of the powerful object that spawned a faith. The world teeters on the precipice of war. The outcome depends on them. And one of them is living a lie.

The Matriarch Matrix is a rich and deeply layered epic story – a spiritual odyssey with a heartbeat of an action adventure. It may make you think, ponder, reflect upon where we came from and where we are going. It blends our past with a speculative future of things that are not so far-fetched. It blends the drama, the comedy, the romance, the tragedy of three protagonists with different cultures, traditions, and beliefs – a Sufi woman, a Jesuit priest, and an alien origin believing atheist. Their journeys separately and together will be a test of their respective faiths and their inner search for personal and family redemption.

Author Bio

I’m a Cambodian woman of mixed blood, married to an aspiring author, and of course he had something to do with my idea to write entertaining fiction. We live in a little green house in the countryside in southern Cambodia. No kids yet, but we’re working on it.

I live on a large plot of land and I enjoy taking care of my trees, plants, and flowers. I also love embroidery, stitching to make beautiful pictures. It’s very meditative for me. And then I frame them and put them all over the walls of my house, which drives my husband crazy.

I’m a newbie when it comes to being an author, but being an avid reader with eclectic tastes (I enjoy reading just about any genre as well as non-fiction) has helped me in my plunge to write commercial fiction. Since I love erotic thriller type films, I decided to write an erotic thriller series. I like the challenge of devising a strong plot to embed my sexy scenes.

About Patricia

I’ve always wanted to be a writer. That was right after I realized that becoming a fairy ballerina or a princess wasn’t going to happen. But being a writer meant I could go places in my head and be other people as much as I wanted. I could even be a fairy ballerina or a princess! My stories have always had romance and history in them. I feel that one sparks the other. I’m not sure I’d really want to live in the past with no running water, take-out menus, flush toilets, hair dryers or antibiotics, but it sure is fun to dream. Besides, swashbuckling pirates and Regency men in their tight, buckskin breeches are hot.

I’m a native of the Boston area. Its history has inspired my writing, and probably influenced my decision to become a high school British Literature teacher so I could pay the bills. I’ve also been an accounts receivable clerk, a receptionist and telephone operator (before cell phones), head of an elementary school library, and president of a food pantry, not in that order. I received a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing degree in Popular Fiction at the fabulous Stonecoast program in Maine, where I met many talented writers, who encouraged me and made my writing better. And now I’m an author writing about dark heroes, feisty heroines, magic, and other fantastical things.

Book Review: Fields of Gold Beneath Pairie Skies by Suzanne deMontigny

Title: Fields of Gold Beneath Prairie Skies
Author: Suzanne deMontigny
Genre: Historical Romance
Rating: 4,5 stars
Purchase: Amazon
Review copy provided by Enchanted Book Promotions in exchange for an honest review.

French-Canadian soldier, Napoleon, proposes to Lea during WWI, promising golden fields of wheat as far as the eye can see. After the armistice, he sends money for her passage, and she journeys far from her family and the conveniences of a modern country to join him on a homestead in Saskatchewan. There, she works hard to build their dream of a prospering farm, clearing fields alongside her husband through several pregnancies and even after suffering a terrible loss. When the stock market crashes in ’29, the prairies are stricken by a long and abysmal drought. Thrown into poverty, she struggles to survive in a world where work is scarce, death is abundant, and hope dwindles. Will she and her family survive the Great Depression?

Fields of Gold Beneath Prairie Skies tells the story of the author’s grandparents and their struggles during the grand depression. Frnech-Canadian soldier Napoleon proposes to the love of his life, Lea, during World War I. He promises her fields of gold (wheat) beneath the prairie skies – hence the title of the book. Lea believes him and journeys away from her family, away from modern conveniences, to join Napoleon on a homestead in Saskatchewan. Prairie life is not what Lea imagined it would be and although she works hard to build her dream of a prospering farm, life is far from fairytale-perfect. When the stock market crashes in ’29, the prairies are hit by a long, terrible drought, and Lea and her family are thrown into poverty. Can they survive the Great Depressoin?

God, life on the prairie put me through a rollercoaster of emotions. Sometimes I felt joy for the small victories Lea and her family had, and for the loving, caring moments they cherished. Sometimes I had to hold in my tears as I saw how tough life was for them, how impossible the odds seemed, how they had to deal with tragedy and loss.

The writing was excellent, and made the setting and characters come alive on the pages. I really felt as if I was transported back in time, as if this family became my own family during the duration of the book. Fans of historical novels should definitely pick up this book.

Mr. Valdemar and Other Gothic Tales

There are a lot of comic adaptations about Edgar Allan Poe’s and Lovecraft’s tales but, what happen with the other writers?

“Mr. Valdemar and Other Gothic Tales” is a webcomic about the gothic genre, every tale is by one different writer and draw by one different illustrator. There are tales from different countries: Germany, Russia… Even from Hispanic countries (the artists and the illustrators are from Spain).

Right now they have just posted two comics:

The Spider by Hanns Heinz Ewers

Probably you don’t know anything about Hanns Heinz Ewers but I’m sure you know his number one fan:

Adolf Hitler.

The Fuhrer hired the author to write the novel about Horst Wessel, the main martyr of the Nazi party. That’s the reason why the name of Hanns Heinz Ewers was buried and forgotten despite being known at his era as “The German Lovecraft”.

The Monkey’s Paw by W. W. Jacobs

Probably this tale is best known for The Simpsons adaptation that for the original tale. However, this is the most adapted terror tale ever.

And these will be the next tales:

El monte de las ánimas by Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer

Bécquer never had succesful; he died by tuberculosis and hunger when he was just 34 years old. Nowadays he is the most important Spanish romantic writer ever.

The Facts in the Case of Mr. Valdemar by Edgar Allan Poe

The tale which give title to the comic. Edgar Allan Poe keep being the main author of this genre 168 years after his dead, that’s why it’s impossible to make a terror anthology without him.

The family of Vurdalak by Aleksey Tolstoy

Ozzy Osbourne loved so much the cinematographic adaptation of this tale that he used the title of the movie as name for his rock band: Black Sabbath.

Sadly there won’t be more adaptations except if the project patreon earns enough money. We really hope they arrive their target.

You can read the first pages of “Mr. Valdemar and Other Gothic Tales” in the main webcomic hosting sites: Tapastic, Smackjeeves, etc.

Book Review: Until Sweet Death Arrives

Title: Until Sweet Death Arrives
Author: Amnon Binyamini
Genre: Mystery, Thriller
Rating: 4,5 stars

Nahum puts his life on the line to fight the evil of corruption

Nahum Patterson, happily married to Edna, is a talented journalist who investigates and then exposes corruption cases in the newspaper. His professionalism is well appreciated, except by those whose reputation he has destroyed. One man, hurt by Nahum’s story, had to flee the country; another was sentenced to prison and became vengefully bitter. Although he knows he is in a dangerous profession, Nahum is on top of the world.

His memory slowly and tragically slips away, but his enemies remember him!

But one day Nahum finds himself lost and cannot find his car. How did it get to the beach? Slowly he becomes more and more confused and cannot recognize his close friends and acquaintances. He becomes nervous and depressed. Edna does not understand why he begins to call her “mother.” Nahum forgets almost everything, but the enemies he had made when he had been healthy did not forget him. And one enemy in particular in this intriguing thriller was not willing to forgive…

An amazing thriller that portrays the agonizing world of Alzheimer’s disease

Binyamini leads the reader into an intriguing thriller, from the first page to the last. But in addition to being a fascinating read, this book teaches us about the anguish of Alzheimer’s disease and how to deal with it. We feel pain and compassion, yet are fascinated by the drama and amazed by the unexpected ending.

In Until Sweet Death Arrives, main character Nahum Patterson is a talented journalist whose professionalism is well regarded by just about anyone… Except the people whose reputation he has destroyed. While Nahum reckons the dangers of his profession, he doesn’t actually believe anything will happen to him, or any of the people he’s helped bring down will take revenge on him.

But one day, he’s lost and can’t find his car. He doesn’t even recognize his friends anymore. He doesn’t even remember his wife, Edna. Unfortunately for Nahum, the people he’s starting to forget, especially the corrupt enemies he once brought down, haven’t forgotten about him at all…

The book handles the theme of mental illness well, and does so in a respectful yet tragic way, showing how horrible it truly is, and how it weakens people, cripples them. In this case, Nahum struggles with Alzheimer’s disease, and it destroys his memories one by one. It’s horrible to read, and saddening too considering he’s still in the prime of his life.

The thriller aspect worked well too, and overall, the book kept me on the edge of my seat for the majority of the time. Excellent writing and intriguing characters complete the picture.
