Mr. Valdemar and Other Gothic Tales

There are a lot of comic adaptations about Edgar Allan Poe’s and Lovecraft’s tales but, what happen with the other writers?

“Mr. Valdemar and Other Gothic Tales” is a webcomic about the gothic genre, every tale is by one different writer and draw by one different illustrator. There are tales from different countries: Germany, Russia… Even from Hispanic countries (the artists and the illustrators are from Spain).

Right now they have just posted two comics:

The Spider by Hanns Heinz Ewers

Probably you don’t know anything about Hanns Heinz Ewers but I’m sure you know his number one fan:

Adolf Hitler.

The Fuhrer hired the author to write the novel about Horst Wessel, the main martyr of the Nazi party. That’s the reason why the name of Hanns Heinz Ewers was buried and forgotten despite being known at his era as “The German Lovecraft”.

The Monkey’s Paw by W. W. Jacobs

Probably this tale is best known for The Simpsons adaptation that for the original tale. However, this is the most adapted terror tale ever.

And these will be the next tales:

El monte de las ánimas by Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer

Bécquer never had succesful; he died by tuberculosis and hunger when he was just 34 years old. Nowadays he is the most important Spanish romantic writer ever.

The Facts in the Case of Mr. Valdemar by Edgar Allan Poe

The tale which give title to the comic. Edgar Allan Poe keep being the main author of this genre 168 years after his dead, that’s why it’s impossible to make a terror anthology without him.

The family of Vurdalak by Aleksey Tolstoy

Ozzy Osbourne loved so much the cinematographic adaptation of this tale that he used the title of the movie as name for his rock band: Black Sabbath.

Sadly there won’t be more adaptations except if the project patreon earns enough money. We really hope they arrive their target.

You can read the first pages of “Mr. Valdemar and Other Gothic Tales” in the main webcomic hosting sites: Tapastic, Smackjeeves, etc.
