Book Review: Timeless Innocents by Janis Susan May

Timeless Innocents is one of the first horror novellas published by Carina Press, and I’m glad they expanded into this genre. I’ve always enjoyed reading horror, and in my opinion, there simply aren’t enough publishers interested in the genre. That said, this book was an enjoyable read, but not a particularly outstanding one. On the one hand, the story feels like it’s too short to really gets its message across, on the other hand it’s suspenseful enough to keep me reading. My major problem was with what happens at the end of the novel, and what the Innocents really turn out to be.

Book Review: Beneath The Shadows by Sara Foster

If you’re as much of a fan of gothic horror as I am, then the synopsis of Beneath The Shadows probably intrigues you more than you’d like to admit. It was the synopsis that first drew me in for this story, but it definitely didn’t dissapoint. It’s a bit less gothic than I would’ve liked, but it does its best to be a gothic horror with a modern twist, and it succeeds in that department. The only problem? To me, it read more like women’s fiction meets mystery. Or even a cozy mystery of sorts. There were creepy, ghostly elements, but they were either quickly dismissed or offered little to nothing to the story. This could’ve been handled differently, better even, by living up to its genre and giving the reader true gothic horror.

Book Review: Hallowed (Unearthly #2) by Cynthia Hand

Hallowed is a tough book to review, because it deals with a lot of difficult topics. It’s certainly a lot more emotional than its prequel, Unearthly, which is great, but also places the characters in difficult situations they may or may not be able to handle. Clara is a part-angel, and that gives her visions of a purpose she must fulfill in life. She’s already fulfilled hers, or at least one of them, but she keeps having recurring dreams that place her at the cemetery, grieving. When it becomes apparent the vision is telling the future, Clara has to find out what’s about to happen and who’s going to die so she can stop it.
