Sean Flanagan has spent a lifetime alone and rejected, constantly hiding who he really is.

With a father who deserted him and a mother who despised him, Sean didn’t think things could get much worse … until he was kicked out of home for being gay. Now he’s discovered he has three half-sisters on the other side of the world. This might be his last chance to find people who will love and accept him. But he’s terrified that if they find out who he really is then they’ll reject him like the rest of his family.

Sean arrives in Houston and is stunned by the warm welcome he receives from his sisters. He begins to hope that maybe this time things will be different. That’s when he meets Hayden Johnson. To follow his heart means risking everything with his newfound family.

Hayden is tired of endless dating. He’s looking for a man to love, someone to spend the rest of his life with. His boss’s new brother ticks all the boxes on the attraction scale, but there’s just one problem – he’s not gay.

Will Sean let his fears rule him, or will he let in the chance of love and find a place where he belongs?

In Place to Belong, Sean Flanagan has spent his entire life hiding who he really is. He got kicked out of his home for being gay, and now has discovered he has three half-sisters on the other side of the world. Desperate to find a family who loves rather than despises him, he sets out to find his sister, although he’s terrified that they’ll reject him like the rest of his family did.

Sean is stunned by the warm welcome he receives from his sisters. When he meets Hayden Johnson, he risks everything with his newfound family to follow his heart.

I felt so sorry for Sean. He was easy to relate to, and I felt so bad he had to hide his sexuality. Hayden brought out the best in him. Hayden is an amazing character, very patient and loving. The romance is sweet and engaging, and I rooted for both these characters. They were perfect together.

This book is part of a series, but can be read as a standalone. I didn’t read the rest of the series and still very much enjoyed this book. A perfect contemporary romance read.

About the Book

TakeAChance

A single moment can change everything.

A university student preparing to confront the adolescent crush who betrayed him. A demon embroiled in a battle against his very nature. A soldier, mentally scarred after fighting in The Great War, torn between propriety and his heart. Though separated by time and distance, culture and reality, these young men all have one thing in common: they each stand at a crossroads in their life and face a choice that will alter the course of their future.

The twelve tales in this collection of gay romantic fiction range from sweet to erotic, contemporary to historical, paranormal to grittily realistic. Whether centred around the fear associated with coming out, the thorny issue of trust, or the struggle for survival, each story explores in its own way the courage needed to overcome personal obstacles and take a chance on love.

Excerpt

Just as I sat, Mr. Keno hit the lights. Everything went black. It hadn’t been so dark in my old school. The blinds over the windows must be heavy enough to be bombproof. Comforting thought. Nobody believed the worn-out phrase “it can’t happen here.” We all knew it could.

“Keep your phones put away,” Mr. Keno said. “It’s going to be OK.” Those would be the last words we’d hear until it was over.

An instant later, someone pushed in next to me, between me and the file cabinet. Just my luck. I squished over against the wall as tightly as I could. Even so, our hips touched. It was so dark I couldn’t tell anything about the person, except that he or she smelled pleasantly of some herbal shampoo. Since I’d only been in the classroom a few minutes before the lockdown started, I hadn’t gotten a chance to really look at my new classmates.

I pressed against the wall as if I might become one with it. What I really wanted to do was curl into a ball. I settled for bending low over my legs, crossed at the ankles. I had too much imagination. It did crazy things when I was afraid. I closed my eyes in the darkness and willed myself to be calm, but every nerve was so keyed up that my pounding heart refused to slow down.

First thing in the morning was the perfect time for a gunman to attack. Kids would be in their classrooms for attendance, so he could move freely in the halls without people hanging around to either jump him or run. Since the classrooms would be full, the gunman could find victims behind every door.

I focused on what I could hear. The fan in the ceiling that I hadn’t noticed before became an insistent whir, so loud I couldn’t believe I hadn’t been aware of it the moment I’d walked into the room. It covered the sounds the kids on the other side of the filing cabinet had to be making—little sounds people couldn’t help but make, like scraping a shoe across the floor when they shifted position, or a stifled cough. I listened so hard it hurt. Only the fan. Nothing in the hallway.

Surely, if this were a real situation, there would be turmoil somewhere in the building. Unless the administrators were expecting something to happen that hadn’t happened yet. I imagined a man prowling the corridors, intent on his destination. Or perhaps he hadn’t chosen his victims yet. He might be waiting for something to speak to him, like the tone of a cell phone from behind a door, or the thump of a backpack falling off a chair. It might only take some little thing like that for him to burst in here and…

Book Review Where Doubt Remains by Sharon Johnson

Genre: M/M Paranormal Romance
Age Group: Adult (18+)

The story continues for Alpha DeMatteo Santiago and his mate. After the nightmare of having his pregnant mate kidnapped and tortured, DeMatteo begins the seemingly impossible process of piecing together the truth. Forces against them take this time to regroup and launch an all-out attack. Lies and half-truths fall apart as the past is investigated, but it’s a race against time and failure could prove to be fatal.
This release is an M/M paranormal shifter romance. This series will contain scenes of graphic violence, graphic sex, graphic language, Mpreg, and graphic birth. What it will not be is an instant mate fairytale, as forces set out to destroy everything and everyone around him.

The story of DeMatteo Santiago, alpha of a shifter pack, continues in the second book in the series, Where Doubt Remains. The book starts off a little slow, but after a few chapters, it hit a good stride and I couldn’t stop reading from that point on.
DeMatteo and Sean are struggling with several things – Sean’s pregnancy (yes, a man being pregnant…it does get quite graphic sometimes), someone is still out to hurt the pride, and danger comes from all sides. There’s hardly any time to just sit down and enjoy each other’s company, but that’s not to say the book doesn’t have some romantic scenes or tender moments.
The story keeps getting better and better. The author has a fast-paced writing style, and the ability to tell an original, suspenseful story. I can’t wait to read what’s in store next for DeMatteo and his pack.

Eighty-six thousand, four hundred seconds. One thousand, four hundred and forty minutes. Twenty-four hours. One day. In his twenty-five years of life, DeMatteo Santiago had often taken for granted how much could change in a single day.
When DeMatteo crawled to bed at 10:30 pm on May 7, 1980, there was no way of knowing how the next twenty-four hours would forever alter his life. As a young Alpha lion shifter, DeMatteo has left his pride in search of his mate and a pride of his own. But the fates have been conspiring for centuries to lead him to this precise moment in time.
May 8, 1980, 10:30 pm: a moment in time that will forever change the life of Matthew (DeMatteo) Santiago. Facing the challenges of being the new Alpha of the largest pride in the United States, DeMatteo must find a way to lead in the face of his own personal tragedy.

Erasing All Doubt is a prequel to the Doubt Series. I read it before starting the rest of the series, but you can also read it after finishing book one, to get better insights in the characters – it probably works best that way, but I enjoyed getting to know the character’s history prior to starting the first book too.

DeMatteo, the main character, is a lion shifter, and Alpha to the largest pride in the United States. The novella chronicles how he meets Hugh; another shifter orginally from Ireland, a man hiding some horrible secrets related to his past. It’s a solid introduction to the series, and if you’ve finished book one and still have some questions, it helps fill up explain some of the character’s histories and connections.

Mini-Review: The Agony That Remains, A Strange Little Place, The Haunted Pub

minireview

Time for some mini-reviews! What are mini-reviews, you ask? As the title suggests, these are short reviews, consisting of one paragraph tops, about a book. It’s a way to catch up on the books I’ve read a while ago, but never got around to reviewing.

The Agony That Remains

Tite: The Agony That Remains

Author: Brandon Callahan

Genre: Nonfiction, True Haunting

Rating: 1 star

Purchase: Amazon

In the northeast corner of Oklahoma, where the Trail of Tears ends and where one of the world’s largest clusters of ley lines intersect, there’s a place of extreme paranormal activity that has received little attention from the outside world. Join Brandon Callahan and his crew as they investigate the horrifying legacy of a bloody and brutal past, where generations of families have been terrorized by ghosts, demons, UFOs, Sasquatch, and countless other paranormal manifestations.

Partnering with a family that’s been driven from their land, Brandon and his team discover energies that have no fear. As dark forces take hold of the investigators’ lives, Brandon must attempt to salvage what’s left of his team’s—and his own—sanity.

Review: One of the most over-the-top, exaggerated, implausible paranormal cases I’ve ever read about. Sure, give me a ghost. Give me a demon. But don’t give me ghosts, demons, aliens, and even death itself dropping by for a visit. It’s like the author’s imagination just went completely wild, and there’s no reason at all why I would believe the author’s claims in this book. It’s just not realistic, and too over the top. Also, the writing is bland, and it’s too obvious the majority of this book is fiction.

Revelstoke: Where the worlds of the living, dead, and extraordinary collide

Packed with stories of hauntings, UFOs, Sasquatch, missing time, and much more, A Strange Little Place takes you into a small town full of thrilling secrets and bizarre encounters.

Chronicling over seventy years of unusual occurrences in his hometown, Brennan Storr provides exciting, first-hand accounts of unexplainable phenomena. Discover the sinister mysteries of Rogers Pass, the strange craft and spectral music of the Arrow Lakes, and generations of hauntings in the infamous Holten House. As a magnet for the supernatural, Revelstoke invites you to experience things you never thought possible.

Review: I want to visit Revelstoke. Right now, please. While UFO’s usually aren’t my thing, the author had a great way of describing what was happening, along with witness testimony and background info. I also loved the accounts of paranormal happenings. It’s obvious the author’s research took up a lot of time, but it makes the book all the better for it.

The Haunted Pub

Title: The Haunted Pub

Author: Melanie Tushmore

Genre: Paranormal, Ghosts, Romance

Rating: 4 stars

Purchase: Amazon

When young cad Finlay Saunders spurns the wrong lover, he is murdered, his soul now tied to the place where his life ended. Though the building changes over the years, Finlay’s haunting of the living becomes so bad, that a priest is called in, trapping him in the wall of his ‘death room’.

Ninety-three years later, Finlay’s room is unwittingly reopened, and given to a twenty year old boy suffering from depression. His negative energy feeds Finlay’s soul, and as soon as the first crackle of blaring rock music fills the room, his ghost is free once again to wreak havoc upon the living.

Review: An intriguing ghost story and gay romance mixed in one. Finlay was an interesting ghost, and his background story made me compelled to understand him better. All characters were realistic, and the writing was very gripping.

Book Review: Skin Deep by DP Denman

SkinDeep_500x750Title: Skin Deep

Author: DP Denman

Genre: M/M contemporary romance

Age Group: Adult

Rating: 4 stars

Liam Newman escaped an abusive past to start a new life with Justin, the man of his dreams. Unfortunately, the old life refuses to stay buried. When a fan of his porn star persona appears, he’s forced to reinvent himself in a surprising new career. Will it give him the new start he craves or lead him deeper into the life he’s trying to leave behind?

Skin Deep is the second book in a series. It starts off with Liam, who escaped an abusive past, now living together with Justin, the man of his dreams. But Liam’s struggle with his past, in which he played in web porn movies, under the influence of his ex-boyfriend, hasn’t come to an end yet. He loses his job when a server recognizes him from the porn videos, and threatens to harm him with that information. After a few struggles back and forth, he realizes he has to quit, and starts to wonder if the past will ever let go of him.

The book relies heavily on characterization, and that’s where it shines. Liam is struggling, and it’s obvious from the start. He goes back and forth between the scared kid he once was, and the confident adult he tries to become. His struggle feels real, and I felt for him. It was painful at times to watch how, even despite all his efforts, things just didn’t work out. Justin was the ever-supportive boyfriend, kind of like a rock to lean on.

Liam’s journey to find himself, and to become the person he’s always wanted to be, starts at the unlikeliest of places – the place that scarred him, seemingly forever. I thought it was a strange choice, but it ultimately turned out to be the right one for him.

The writing was decent, and the characters carry the novel. Sometimes the topics are quite heavy, and this book is obviously not for everyone, but I enjoyed it. I’m not sure if this is the end for our two protagonists, but I wouldn’t mind reading more.

Book Review: The River Leith by Leta Blake

Memory is everything.

After an injury in the ring, amateur boxer Leith Wenz wakes to discover his most recent memories are three years out of date. Unmoored and struggling to face his new reality, Leith must cope anew with painful revelations about his family. His brother is there to support him, but it’s the unfamiliar face of Zach, a man introduced as his best friend, that provides the calm he craves. Until Zach’s presence begins to stir up feelings Leith can’t explain.

For Zach, being forgotten by his lover is excruciating. He carefully hides the truth from Leith to protect them both from additional pain. His bottled-up turmoil finds release through vlogging, where he confesses his fears and grief to the faceless Internet. But after Leith begins to open up to him, Zach’s choices may come back to haunt him.

Ultimately, Leith must ask his heart the questions memory can no longer answer.

The River Leith is not for everyone. It touches upon some heavy topics, like the main character losing his memories of the last three years. Leith Wenz suffered a serious injury while fighting as an amateur boxer. Because of that, he lost his memory of the last three years. When he wakes up in the hospital, he doesn’t even remember his Dad passing away. When he gets introduced to Zach, his supposed best friend, feelings he can’t explain come stirring up. His friends and family have been hiding that Leith has been gay for the past years, and Zach’s true identity. They thought Leith might be too confused or upset if they told him the truth, but meanwhile Leith is suffering from feelings he can’t explain.

Zach is offered an even tougher deal than Leith. He can’t tell Leith the truth, even if it hurts him more than he’s willing to admit to anyone. Zach was easily my favorite character. He seemed so hurt and lost, I just wanted to comfort him and tell him it would all be all right.

While Leith’s family and friends made a questionable decision to hide the truth from him, they did so because they thought it would be the best thing for him. I liked most of the secondary characters, especially Leith’s brother, but none of them shine as much as the main couple.

The River Leith is about much more than just romance. It’s about finding one’s true self, about overcoming tragedy, about finding love in unexpected places, about never giving up. It’s a well-written, heart wrecking novel that brought me close to tears at times. But for the romance fans, there’s plenty of that too.
