CosplayBy day I am a boring civil servant, but by night (and at weekends) I write stories. I love fiction, I love the way that words can draw you from your own everyday world.

I love to read. As a child I read all of the Enid Blyton books and devoured Roald Dahl. As a teenager, I discovered LJ Smith, Anne McCaffrey, Tamora Pierce, David Eddings and went through the phase of reading Point Horrors. As an adult, I found Kelley Armstrong, Raymond E Feist, Georgette Heyer, The Brontes, Mary Shelley, Bram Stoker, Sheridan La Fanu and Henry James. I cannot imagine live without books.

At the close of 1821, the penal colony of Newcastle looks to be every bit as black as it’s painted. Emma Colchester charters a ride to Australia with a promise of marriage to a man she has never met. But appearances aren’t always as they seem. And with a commitment unavoidable Emma learns that shackles are not always forged from iron.

Tobias Freeman longs for redemption and hope. After a rough journey to New South Wales, Tobias learns the rations, the regulations, and the reprisal.
But neither Emma nor Tobias expect the repercussions.

In Charter to Redemption, young Emma Colchester must save her family’s financial wellfare by entering an arranged marriage with a man she’s never met. She must travel to Australia on board of a ship, to marry this man, leaving behind everything she’s ever known.

When the ship is put in peril, and a young man named Tobias Freeman rescues her, Emma is plunged into an adventure that will shake her world to its core. Tobias comes with a few issues of his own, but he represents something Emma has only ever dreamed of – a person she could really fall for, even though he’s ever she shouldn’t fall for. As she grows closer to Tobias, suffers through betrayal, and figures out nothing is as it seems, Emma must learn to make her own decision, and find the courage to follow her heart.

What I liked the most about this book, is the history. There’s so much history it nearly drips off the pages. I’ve read plenty of historical romances that only included limited history – besides the dresses and corsets, the book could’ve taken place last week. But nothing of the sort happens in Charter to Redemption: the history is rich, and detailed, vivid even.

The romance and writing worked brilliantly too. It’s not my first time reading about the “arranged marriage and falling for someone else” trope, but it’s definitely one of the best books I’ve read based on that premise. Emma is an engaging, entertaining character, and very brave, especially considering the era she lives in.

Numerous rejections never daunted the author, and many years after her dream was envisaged, so was the reality. Yet for all the countless doubts that niggle every writer who has lived in hope, it is humbling praise indeed when reviewer F. Book Review: The Frost of Springtime by Rachel L. Demeter

THE FROST OF SPRINGTIME - Cover ArtTitle: The Frost of Springtime

To rescue her was to rescue his own soul.

On a cold Parisian night, Vicomte Aleksender de Lefèvre forges an everlasting bond with a broken girl during her darkest hour, rescuing her from a life of abuse and misery. Tormented by his own demons, he finds his first bit of solace in sheltering little Sofia Rose.

But when Aleksender is drawn away by the Franco-Prussian war, the seasons pass. And in that long year, Sofia matures into a stunning young woman—a dancer with an understanding of devotion and redemption far surpassing her age.

Alongside his closest friend, Aleksender returns home to find that “home” is gone—replaced by revolution, bloodshed, betrayal—and a love always out of reach. Scarred inside and out, he’s thrust into a world of sensuality and violence—a world in which all his hours have now grown dark, and where only Sofia might bring an end to the winter in his heart.

Inspired by the 1871 Paris Commune, The Frost of Springtime is a poignant tale of revolution, redemption, and the healing power of love.

I have a soft spot for broken, tortured souls. Even from the moment I first encountered Aleksender de Lefèvre and Sofia Rose in The Frost of Springtime, I knew they’d be the kind of characters that would tickle my soft spot – and they are. Sofia was my favorite of both of them – she was so innocent, so pure, I could not help but like her. Alek is a more troubled character, less black-white, a lot more grey. In a way, this makes him more intriguing. I also liked how he fought his feelings for Sofia, there was a constant struggle going on, and Alek tried to deny his feelings constantly, which made for an interesting dynamic.

I kind of felt sorry for Elizabeth though, Alek’s wife. He didn’t love her, since they were married in an arranged marriage, but he didn’t wish her ill either. He just fell in love with another woman. This makes Alek a more troublesome character to understand – sometimes he acted arrogant and selfish toward his wife. He idolized Sofia, made her into the kind of woman she could never truly be, a goddess, a woman that isn’t real. And by turning her into that, no other woman could ever compete. It makes for interesting character development though.

The setting was France at the time of the Franco-Prussian war. I loved the setting, and found it very intriguing, and well-described. I could picture myself back in the Paris Commune of 1871, alongside the characters. While some might find there’s slightly too much hisotrical information, I didn’t mind – I like books in which I can learn a thing or two, even in fiction.

The Frost of Springtime offers a heart-breaking romance story in an intriguing historical setting with dynamic, interesting main characters. Ideal for fans of historical romance.

A woman’s smile . . .

Rosalyn Delaney’s husband, Josiah, vanished six years ago. Following a private detective’s lead, Rosalyn leaves Salt Lake City and boards a train heading to the mining town of Whiskey Ridge, Arizona. She arrives at Rose House, an old mansion reputed to be haunted, only to discover that her missing husband has been killed, and his business partner, Whip Kincaid, is wanted for his murder. Determined to uncover the secrets surrounding Josiah and his death, Rosalyn decides to stay–even though she begins to receive nightly visits from a charming “ghost” . . .

A ghost’s siss . . .

Escaping a troubled past, Whip Kincaid had hoped he could make a fresh start in Whiskey Ridge and open a saloon with his friend Josiah. Now, as a murder suspect hiding in his own house, Whip’s future looks bleak indeed . . . unless he can find the real culprit. But the unexpected intrusion of Rosalyn ruins his plan to sneak out at night to investigate. Scaring her away is his first step in clearing his name, but Rosalyn doesn’t rattle easily. And Whip isn’t sure he wants the lovely widow to walk out of his life — especially when she’ll take his heart with her.

Rosalyn Delaney moves to Whiskey Ridge, an old mining town to find her missing husband. She arrives at Rose House, a majestic old mansion with the reputation of being haunted. In Whiskey Ridge, she finds out the entire story of how her husband was killed by his business partner Whip Kincaid, and how the last is still listed as a wanted fugitive. But Rosalyn has the feeling more is going on than she realizes at first glance. What she doesn’t know however, is that Whip Kincaid has been hiding in his own house, Rose House, the mansion she just moved into. At night he sneaks out to investigate, and when he finds out his mansion is occupied by this strange but elusive woman, the first thing he wants to do is scare her away. But Rose doesn’t scare easily, and when she’s not phased by his continuous attempts to scare her, Whip is intrigued. The more he learns about her, the more he realizes he may not want her out of his life after all.

This was a delightful, interesting, well-written book. I’ve always been a fan of gothic novels, and with Rosalyn moving into the large, supposedly “haunted” mansion reminded me of the many gothic novels I devoured as a kid. The novel keeps on this vibe for some time, but it’s primarily a western historical romance. What I loved the most however was the mystery behind the murder, who was responsible, the long-kept secrets, and of course, the haunting. This all added up to an amazing story, and the romance was almost unnecessary – the book had already a lot of potential. The romance was really the top of the cake though.

Lots of tension, nail-biting moments and some spoilers I didn’t see coming. The Scent of Roses is a delightful mix of romance, mystery, historical fiction and suspense.

Amelia has a problem: she is set to marry a man twice her age and though she does not love him, she aims to please her domineering aunt and do what is expected of her. This changes when she meets Jordan Bradford, her handsome white employer.
A man with everything—Jordan Bradford is interested in Amelia instantly and cannot for the life of him figure out why she lets those around her treat her as they do. He is determined to make her see her self worth but never dreamed that the pretty little maid could cause him such grief. Yet as time passes and they encounter each other more it is near impossible for him to keep his hands off the brown-skinned maid.

Rescued is a historical romance novel, and one of the first in the genre I’ve read in quite a while. It was actually a refreshing read, considering it’s one of the first interracial romance novels I’ve read as well. It’s not that I would shy away from the topic or something like that, it’s just that I never really get the chance to read or review books in this genre, so of course I jumped for the opportunity.

The story is about Amelia, a young woman who works as a maid in the household of Mr. Bradford, a bachelor whose recently returned from overseas. Amelia is convinced she’s not worth much, since her half-sister keeps on insisting she’s ugly and the only man ever interested in her is a sixty-something year old who’s been lusting after her since she was a child. Amelia has zero confidence, so naturally she can’t believe it when Jordan, Mr. Bradford, is interested in her. At first, Jordan tries to keep his distance, not because of Amelia’s skin color or that she’s his maid, but because he wants to protect her. He’s never been in love – except with his first wife, and that ended disasterously – and he doesn’t want something like this to happen to Amelia. She misunderstands everything he says, falsely believing he thinks she’s ugly as well. While Jordan grows more and more in love with Amelia, she tries to come to terms with her own feelings, which may result in her having to leave everything behind to be with this man.

What I thought was interesting about this book is the historical setting. It’s actually pretty vague when exactly the book is set – slavery is abolished, but still black and white people aren’t treated equally, and it would be frowned upon, even dangerous, if they had a relationship. The small share of interracial romance novels I’ve read were mostly in the period when slavery was still accepted by society, so it was great to see another perspective, an evolving one, on a more evolved society.

I liked Jordan. He was a nice, male read. Very alpha, and at times contradictory, but in a way that seemed to suit him. He was literally hot and cold, pullling Amelia close one minute and pushing her away the next. I liked his little mind games at the start, but by the end of the book (roughly at around page 200) I wish he’d grow up and start to value Amelia more. A little later, he did, and not a moment to see, or he may have lost her forever. I liked this character’s growth, his change in personality, from being a man who feared love and kept everyone at arm’s length to becoming someone who was not afraid to let others in.

Amelia was a different story though. I didn’t like her that much. Everyone kept saying about how nice she was, and it was, but I was a bit wary why even Margaret, Jordan’s cousin, would consider her a friend, since there would be a class difference the size of Mount Everest betwen them – Maragret being a proper lady, and Amelia a maid. Also, Amelia’s half-sister was really annoying, always trying to make Amelia do what she wanted to, and not once did Amelia stand up to her. There’s a difference between being nice and being a push over. In this case, the line was blurry. I also didn’t see Amelia evolve, instead it just happened. From one page to the other, not gradually at all. I liked the evolution in her personality though, she became wittier, more confident, and that was a good thing.

I did like the relationship between Jordan and Amelia. I had my doubts about them halfway through though, when Jordan showed a nasty streak to his personality, and wondered how I couldn’t have seen that one coming.

The story itself may not be the most original one (maid falls for handsome, charming lord of the house, and he, even though he used to date around and didn’t like commitment, falls for her because she’s special) I liked the execution of the story here. I liked the historical setting, which was sometimes described in so much detail I could imagine myself walking through the mansion.

If you’re in need of some historical romance for those cold winter nights, give Rescued a try.

About Rescued

Author: Arlene Lam
Genre: Historical Romance / Historical Interracial

The fire that burned when they were together was consuming.

Her whole life Amelia was told what to do obediently following the rules her domineering aunt set forth. Right down to letting the woman choose the man she was to marry. However this was about to change because from the moment she laid eyes on Jordan Bradford the shy young maid was lost. But loving a man like him was beyond dangerous for more than the obvious reasons. However Amelia found herself throwing caution to the wind and willing to risk everything for just one kiss.

Intriguing and honest Jordan was drawn to Amelia instantly. Shy and witty Jordan knows that deep down there is a woman just waiting to be set free if only those around her would let her. Still he knew pursuing her was not an option. And even if it was she was already promised to another man. Yet every time she was near that knowledge was lost to him. Wasn’t forbidden fruit always sweeter? It was an added luxury that whenever he was in her presence his past seemed just that, the past. Just one look and a flame long though extinguished was awakened in him. So much so that Amelia was a woman Jordan decided needed to be rescued.

Author Bio

Arlene always finds it sort of hard and funny to try to define herself, but when if she thought on it she would probably say that first she is a wife and mother, and second she is a writer. A native of Northern California she resides in the Bay Area just minutes from beautiful San Francisco. Here you will be likely find me either with my family or with my face buried in a book. Since I was a child I can recall having a passion for reading. As a little child I was the only girl on my street who had a mini library in her room. I use to love it when my mother would take me to get a new book. The excitement was sometimes overwhelming. What author should I pick, what genre? Mom was always so sweet and would let me pick more than one. She loved that I shared her passion for reading, but I wasn’t the only one my older sisters were growing large the collections of literature as well in their respective rooms themselves. I credit my mother for planting the seed that I could do anything, and when I started writing she encouraged me to pursue my dream and assured me she would be proud of me no matter what. Even so it took me a while to finally believe in myself enough to give it a go. I published my first short story Flowers of the Bayou in July of 2012. It is a series of prequels that will lead into three major novels I plan to release. The first being Rescued, due for release July 27th 2012. I’m more than excited about it and also very proud.
