Amelia and Uglesnoo land on Mercury.  They meet the Merballs, the friendly aliens that live there.  All goes well, until an asteroid hits their planet. Amelia and Uglesnoo find themselves in deep trouble. How will they convince the Merballs of their innocence? And how will they manage to collect the flying shoes, escape Mercury and continue their quest to save Uglesnoo’s sister?

I previously read and reviewed Amelia, the Venutons and the Golden Cage, book two in the series, and really enjoyed it. So, when I had the opportunity to read book three, Amelia, the Merballs and the Emerald Cannon, of course I couldn’t say no.

With the second book, I was amazed by how creative the author was, and I have to say, this third book is even more original, fun and creative!

In this book, Amelia and Uglesnoo land on Mercury where they meet the Merballs. All seems to go pretty well, until an asteroid hits Mercury, and the Merballs areconvinced Amelia and Uglesnoo are somehow involved. With aliens, different planets, a good dose of humor and excellent storytelling that is age-appropriate, this is one of the best kids series out there. The illustrations are pretty fun too and fit the story well.

These delightful tales are sure to help your little ones settle down and drift contentedly off to sleep.  Written by a grandfather for his own kids and grandchildren, these eighteen entertaining stories feature lots of talking animals, including a kangaroo who teaches a pony how to jump, a little bear who wants to play baseball, a coyote who learns to fly, a magic balloon that takes a little girl all the way to Japan and back, and some resourceful ants who build a swimming pool so they can play as well as work.  It’s full of positive images and plots that inspire creative solutions to various challenges.  A lovely read-aloud adventure the whole family will enjoy!

Grandpa Bernie’s Bedtime Stories is a wonderful storybook, written by ‘grandpa’ Bernard Ditchik, featuring eighteen bedtime sotries for kids. The stories are short, so that the kids won’t get bored. The book itself is almost a work of art all on its own, with a colorful background and cute illustrations to accompany the chapter titles.

The stories are kids appropriate, and a lot of them feature talking animals. I remember some of my favorite stories as a kid did have talking animals in the main roles, so that’s sure to be a hit with kids. The book also has some wonderful messages for friends, about relationships, friendship, and so on, but the message doesn’t overpower the story – ultimately, the story is most important.

I’m pretty sure children will love this collection of stories. Since it has eighteen different stories, by the time you get to the end, the little ones will be excited to hear the first story again!

Embark on a baking adventure with Mimi where she will measure, mix, and bake her way to the perfect batch of gingerbread men. If Mimi can do it, so can you!
Mimi’s Adventures in Baking Gingerbread Men is the third book in the Mimi’s Adventures in Baking series.

Mimi’s Adventures in Baking Gingerbread Men is the third book in the Mimi’s Adventures in Baking series. I only read this one, but you don’t need to have read the previous books to fully understand the story. Since it’s snowing outside, Mimi and Danny go to Nonni’s house. Nonni wants to try baking gingerbread men, and enlists the help of the two kids. The best part is when they can decorate the gingerbread men. At the end of the book, the recipe is included.

I loved the illustrations. They’re simply adorable, and the pastel colors work great. I checked out the covers for the other books in the series too, and I love how consistent their look is. The writing was good too, and appropriate for kids. They’ll understand all the words when parents read it to them, and older ones can read it on their own.

A word of warning though: you might end up baking gingerbread men after reading this!

Author Bio

Chef Alyssa has been baking since she was a little girl in her grandmother’s kitchen. Since graduating from the Culinary Institute of America she has worked for famous chefs and elite companies such as the Ritz Carlton, Tom Colicchio, Norman Van Aken and Gray Kunz. She currently is the Executive Chef at Riverwalk Bar and Grill on the Historic nook of New York City, Roosevelt Island. She also has a boutique custom cake company called AllyCakesNYC where she creates cakes to appease the imagination. Through her journey of baking she developed Mimi, her very own miniature version of herself.

As a child she loved baking and everything that came with it. As an adult and food lover she realized there was something missing when she frequented bookstores. A interactive children’s cookbook. And we are not talking about a boring old cookbook for kids with lots and lots of recipes, and some pictures. Children these days have just as much interest in the kitchen as there parents do, but the ordinary cookbook is just not going to cut it. She created Mimi’s Adventures in Baking  to give children and adults a way to get into the kitchen and allow the child to become the chef and the adult the assistant. Each book has one recipe and an interactive storyline the child can read, and at the end go into the kitchen and do what Mimi did!  And for the “non-baking” parent, these elite pastry chef recipes are tested and ready for even the most inexperienced baker! Impress other moms with Mimi’s creations!

Mimi’s Adventures in Baking
will also teach children how to measure, mix and bake their way through the kitchen while also giving safety tips along the way. No more boring cookbooks! Now there is a fun, exciting and educational way to learn how to bake!

Tammy Cortez
Tammy Cortez is a Fremont, California native now living in Georgetown, Texas. She grew up living in suburbia but spent every weekend at their horse ranch 30 minutes away in the country. Tammy competed in team penning events, winning many of them, including 1st place in a larger event resulting in her first silver belt buckle, still one of her prized possessions.
She has been married for 25 years to a guy she met in the 7th grade and remained friends with through middle and high school. They have two daughters, 24 & 12.Tammy spent the first two years of her marriage as a Navy wife having lived at the well known and much loved NAS Miramar (now MCAS Miramar) and then NAS Lemore, both in California.
Outside of enjoying time with her family, Tammy loves repurposing old furniture and other fun finds as well as painting. Not painting on canvas, though she would love to give that a whirl, but home interior painting. “It’s the one thing everyone dreads, but I find almost therapeutic,” she says.
She found, or re-found, her passion for writing when she decided to write a story intended as a gift for her youngest daughter. After discussing it with a couple of friends that had written books, she was convinced she should publish it. “When I started writing I found something I realize now, I had lost. Back in high school I had an English teacher, I wish I could remember her name, but she had us do this great writing exercise. We would close our eyes and lay our heads down on our desks. She would then read a few sentences that were descriptive of a location and situation, and then ask us to raise our heads and write what we saw. We would go through this process a few times and the end result was a story. When many of my classmates had 2 – 3 pages I had 6+ pages. I could write and write and write. Then I stopped. I guess it was so non-traditional I just never even considered it as a career. I write very much in the same manner now. Very off the cuff.”
The move to Texas took Tammy away from her Business Analyst job in Information Technology at an energy laboratory in California. This move opened up a door that never would have been considered before. Tammy found Waldorf Publishing through a friend and is working on a series of children’s books as well as some middle grade books. She is now dedicated to writing when she isn’t volunteering at her daughter’s school or spending time with family and friends.

Book Review Pearls and Tools of Wisdom for Parents & Children

coverTitle: Pearls and Tools of Wisdom for Parents & Children

Author: Donna Gardner

Genre: Children’s Book

Age Group: Children

Rating: 4 stars

Purchase: Amazon

Review copy provided by Enchanted Book Promotions in exchange for an honest review.

Do you want to raise a child that is WISE?

As adults we are charged with protecting our most precious commodity… our children. The greatest protection we could offer them is to provide them with guidance on attaining wisdom. Within the pages of this book you will read the pearls of wisdom offered in God’s word. As well as learn tools that you and your child can apply to everyday life. May Pearls and Tools of Wisdom for Parents and Children be a blessing for you and your family as it provides guidance on the importance of listening, praying, learning, being positive, being good, working, and persevering.

In Pearls and Tools of Wisdom for Parents & Children, child psychologist Donna Gardner shows parents how to teach their children certain biblical values, accompanied by cute illustrations. For example, the first chapter focuses on listening, and it explains what the bible and God say about listening. Next, Dr. Donna gives a lesson about listening to the parents and then to the children. She also proposes an activity, has some advices specifically for girls and boys, and then includes a biblical verse about wisdom. The chapter ends with a page for notes that parents and kids can fill in.

The second chapter focuses on praying, and uses the same formula. The book goes on like that, providing wisdom and lessons for parents and kid while showcasing the lessons with cute illustrations using lots of colors.

It’s an interesting book, one that would be great for parents and kids to read together.

Book Review: The Monster on Top of the Bed by Alan H. Jordan

51Yy-NLOynLTitle: The Monster on Top of the Bed & My Monster on Top of the Bed
Author: Alan H. Jordan
Genre: Children’s Picture Book
Age Group: Children
Rating: 5 stars
Buy: Amazon
Review copy provided by Enchanted Book Promotions in exchange for an honest review.

Once upon a time there was a little girl named Suzy, who used to jump up and down on her bed having just a great time. This scared a young critter named Karrit who lived under Suzy’s bed and he wanted her to be his friend. Still, Suzy ate strange things like cakes made out of pans (pancakes) and the toes of toemays (tomatoes) and—he couldn’t believe it—he heard her talk about eating something truly horrendous.

One day Karrit heard Suzy tell her mother that she was lonely and needed a friend. Because of that Karrit decided to visit Suzy. At first Suzy was afraid of Karrit, who had red, scaly legs, and a blue nose. But Suzy noticed that Karrit seemed scared of her too. So, Suzy treated Karrit the way that she would want to be treated if she had gone to his house.

As they grew to know each other, Suzy figured out why Karrit was afraid of her, and she was sorry to have scared him. She showed him a hotdog (she didn’t eat dogs that were hot) a tomato (she didn’t eat the toes of matoes) and a carrot (she definitely didn’t eat Karrits).

Suzy made Karrit feel that she liked him, and that she wanted him to be happy. Because of that, they kept getting to know each other better until one day they both realized that they didn’t have to be afraid of each other, and that it was a mistake for each of them to think of the other as a “monster.” Suzy and Karrit became best friends, and neither was afraid of monsters again.

The Monster on Top of the Bed is an adorable, cute book about Suzy, a little girl, and the monster living under her bed. The monster’s name is Karrit, and he’s actually not all that bad. When he overhears Suzy telling her Mom she’s lonely, Karrit decides to pay her a visit. At first, Suzy is scared of the monster, but Karrit is just as scared of her – after all, she eats the craziest things! Like cakes made of pans, toes of toemays and something even worse than all that! She even ate carrots, which sounds suspiciously like Karrit!

When Suzy figures out Karrit is afraid of her, she shows him all the things he’s supposedly so afraid of, and the two of them become great friends. The ending is heart-warming. The illustrations are colorful and lovely, and they fit the theme. The book also allows kids for the option to come up with a story of their own, which is a great addition.
