Displaced by the Pakistan floods, Rani’s family has taken refuge at a relief camp where they are doing their part to help other flood victims. Eight-year old Rani wants to assist but doesn’t know how. Heeding the advice of her father to help in a way only children can, Rani embarks on a journey to bring true joy to a dear friend on the occasion of Eid.

In Rani in Search of a Rainbow, Rani and her family have taken refuge at a relif camp after hiding from the Pakistan floods. Her family helps out the other flood victims, but Rani feels like there’s nothing for her to do. She wants to help others, but whenever she offers, she gets turned down by the members of her family, until she comes up with an unique way to help, and bring happiness to a friend she made at the refuge camp.

This is an inspiring story about courage, friendship and being there for one another when in need. The story talks about Rani and her family, life in the refugee camp, the Pakistan floods and the influence it has on communities. The book also features adorable illustrations with bright colors. Kids will love it, and they’ll learn things from it as well, about the values of friendship and helping others, for instance.

About The Book

51Yy-NLOynLTitle: The Monster on Top of the Bed & My Monster on Top of the Bed

Author: Alan H. Jordan

Genre: Children’s Picture Book

Once upon a time there was a little girl named Suzy, who used to jump up and down on her bed having just a great time. This scared a young critter named Karrit who lived under Suzy’s bed and he wanted her to be his friend. Still, Suzy ate strange things like cakes made out of pans (pancakes) and the toes of toemays (tomatoes) and—he couldn’t believe it—he heard her talk about eating something truly horrendous.

One day Karrit heard Suzy tell her mother that she was lonely and needed a friend. Because of that Karrit decided to visit Suzy. At first Suzy was afraid of Karrit, who had red, scaly legs, and a blue nose. But Suzy noticed that Karrit seemed scared of her too. So, Suzy treated Karrit the way that she would want to be treated if she had gone to his house.

As they grew to know each other, Suzy figured out why Karrit was afraid of her, and she was sorry to have scared him. She showed him a hotdog (she didn’t eat dogs that were hot) a tomato (she didn’t eat the toes of matoes) and a carrot (she definitely didn’t eat Karrits).

Suzy made Karrit feel that she liked him, and that she wanted him to be happy. Because of that, they kept getting to know each other better until one day they both realized that they didn’t have to be afraid of each other, and that it was a mistake for each of them to think of the other as a “monster.” Suzy and Karrit became best friends, and neither was afraid of monsters again.

Book Review: Kristin’s Ghost by Wayne A.D. Kerr

Night after night a strange apparition appears at Kristin’s bedside. Is it dangerous? Is the dancing spirit trying to send her a message?

When Xander and Yzzie discover that their friend is being haunted, the seventh graders make it their number one priority to solve the mystery of Kristin’s Ghost.

The truth will surprise them all!.

After the adventures in Monsters and Miracles, I looked forward to reading the sequel, Kristin’s Ghost. The book certainly didn’t dissapoint. If anything, I loved it even more than the previous book in the series. Xander and Yzzie are back for more fun and mayhem, and this time they’ve been teamed up with Yzzie’s friend, Kristin, who gets visited every night by a ghost she’s named Cassandra. Kristin is reluctant to share her story, but when she hears Xander has been bullied before because he believed he saw an UFO, she’s more willing to open up. Kristin tells them about her ghostly visitor, who appears at the exact same time every nine, twenty minutes past one.

Kristin used to be afraid of the ghost, but she’s not anymore, she’s gotten used to it. If anything, she wants to find out who Cassandra is, and why she’s haunting her. Xander, Yzzie and Kristin team up to find out the truth about the ghost. I felt a connection to all of the characters right away – Xander and Yzzie because I got to know them in the previous book, and Kristin because the book starts out by introducing her to the reader, and makes it easy to establish a connection with her.

All the characters were well-rounded and intriguing enough to keep middle graders (and even adults) entertained. The writing was great, as in the previous book, and overall the story held a few surprising twists, and was fast-paced and engaging.

Author: Majanka Verstraete

Genre: Horror, Lower Grade, Chapter Book

For as long as he can remember, Nolan has been afraid of drowning. The fear is so bad he can’t even go swimming with his friends.

In an attempt to help him get over his fears, his Dad signs him up for a summer camp near Lake Weird. Ever since Nolan heard the news, he’s been having nightmares about an abandoned cabin near a lake, and about him drowning in water thick as blood.

Nolan is certain his nightmares are related to his fear of drowning, but when he arrives at summer camp, and finds out there’s a cabin near Lake Weird that matches the withered cabin from his nightmares, he realizes something more sinister is going on.

Can Nolan find out the reason why he’s spent his entire life being afraid of drowning? How is it connected to the spooky cabin from his nightmares, and the lake surrounded by creepy, crawling mist?

Book Review: Why is the sky blue? by Shabana Muhajir

coverfinal_rankTitle: Why is the sky Blue?

Author: Shabana Muhajir

Genre: Non-Fiction, Kids

Age Group: Picture Books, Kids

Rating: 4 stars

Purchase: Website, Amazon

Review copy provided by Enchanted Book Promotions in exchange for an honest review.

While playing at the beach, two boys begin to wonder why the sky is blue and ask their mother to explain the reason to them. As they are very young, their mother needs to decide how best to explain to her boys. She discusses the phenomenon of the blue sky in a manner that even her six year old can understand. While addressing their initial query, the boys come up with several other related questions, and the mother answers them all with simple facts and drawings. To make it easier and more interesting, she performs a fun experiment with her boys, which shows them why the sky is blue at sunrise and red/orange at sunset.

The book is a must have for all those curious kids who are trying to make sense of the world around them, and for all those parents who want to satisfy their curiosity.

Two young boys, Aayan and Rayan, go to the beach one day with their Mom, when one of the boys asks Mom why the sky is blue. It’s such a simple, yet such a thoughtful question. Instead of coming up with half an answer, their Mom goes into great troubel to tell them how it works. She explains that all colors have different wavelengths, and for instance, blue and violet have short wavelengths, whereas red and yellow have longer wavelengths. Shorter wavelengths get scattered in the atmosphere by particles and gases. Red goes right through, because it has a longer wavelength, so we can’t see it, but blue, with its short wavelength, gets scattered. Why we don’t see violet? Simple, because we see blue more easily.

She also goes on to explain why the sky is red in the evening. But if you want to know why that is, you’ll have to read the book. Or as, in other words, I can’t be bothered to explain. And the book explains it way better than I ever could.

Why is the sky blue? is probably the first non-fiction book for kids I’ve read since I was a kid. It’s well-written, with short, easy sentences for kids to understand. The explanation offered here about why the sky is blue is perhaps the best-explained, easiest-to-understand explanation I’ve ever read about this particular subject. If a parent reads this book with a child, and explains (or refers to the glossary) what the child doesn’t understand, every once in a while, then the child will surely understand the topic, why the sky is blue, and what’s going on.

I also liked the little experiment at the end. It was great to see how the Mom, knowing both her sons were so interested in the subject, even managed to host an experiment to explain it! Great parenting, and an example for other parents.

My only pet peeve about the book were the illustrations. They aren’t all that professional. Even the simple illustrations to understand what the Mom is talking about, why well-thought-through, and explaining their point, don’t look professional, and in fact, look a little sloppy.

But apart from that, I enjoyed the book. The writing was perfect for young kids. If your kid likes science, or comes up with these kind of questions every now and then, then Why is the sky blue? is a must read.
