About the Book

ahoneyedlightTitle: A Honeyed Light

Author: Freddie Milano

Genre: M/M Contemporary Romance

Kunal, relative newcomer to the strange town of Harmony, has his hands full preparing for Diwali. That should be enough to keep anyone’s mind preoccupied, but Kunal can’t really ignore that he’s nearly thirty, single, and still buried in the closet.

Out of town at a gay club one night, he bumps into Oscar, proprietor of Harmony’s only sex shop, and figures his secret is now officially out. What he doesn’t expect is a slow seduction, or to have to decide what it is he really wants in life.

Author Bio

freddie-author-photoFreddie Milano lives with her partner-in-crime, two adorable and devilish cats, and far more ideas than she really has time to set down on (electronic) paper. She’s been writing since she could hold a pen, though most of the embarrassing stories thankfully never made in onto the internet, and can stay safely buried.

She loves wine, Korean pop music, tea, chocolate, coffee, mythology, and both video and tabletop gaming. An ESFJ surrounded by introverts, Freddie has learned the art of socialization in moderation. Besides, staying in just leaves her more time to write.

Book Review and Giveaway Life as a Teenage Vampire

lastvcover_frontTitle: Life as a Teenage Vampire

Author: Amanda Meuwissen

Genre: YA M/M Paranormal Romance

Age Group: Young Adult

Rating: 4 stars

The last thing Emery expected at the end of his senior year of high school was to become a vampire and fall in love with his best friend… Emery Mavus just wants to survive his senior year of high school. Becoming a vampire complicates things. So does a bizarre mentor, a group of vampire hunters, and an unexpected, new attraction for his openly gay best friend, Connor. An occasional uncontrollable hunger for blood might be the least of his worries.

I didn’t have very high expectations when I started Life as a Teenage Vampire. The plot sounded not that original, kind of like Twilight except the main character, Emery, was a male in love with another male – his best friend Connor. But, don’t be mistaken by the short synopsis. This book is very different, and it’s quite frankly, a whole lot better than your standard run-of-the-mill vampire story.

Emery never expected his senior year would go down like this. That he would become a vampire. That he’d fall in love with his best friend, Connor. That he’d get chased down by vampire hunters. The focus was more on the characters and their blossoming relationship than on the vampirism, but it did bring a nice touch. As Emery is transforming into another creature, he’s also transforming as a person – growing up, learning who he truly is. There’s a symbolism there, between the act of growing up, and the whole vampire angle, that I thought worked really well.

The characters were very realistic, especially Emery. Sometimes they’re a little immature, sometimes they’re surprisingly mature for their age, but they all sound very realistic, like typical teenagers. The story pulled me in, but the writing and characters made me fall in love.

Book Review Where Doubt Remains by Sharon Johnson

where-doubt-remainsTitle: Where Doubt Remains (Doubt Series Book 2)
Author: Sharon Johnson
Genre: M/M Paranormal Romance
Age Group: Adult (18+)
Rating: 4 stars
Purchase: Amazon
Review copy provided by Enchanted Book Promotions in exchange for an honest review.

The story continues for Alpha DeMatteo Santiago and his mate. After the nightmare of having his pregnant mate kidnapped and tortured, DeMatteo begins the seemingly impossible process of piecing together the truth. Forces against them take this time to regroup and launch an all-out attack. Lies and half-truths fall apart as the past is investigated, but it’s a race against time and failure could prove to be fatal.
This release is an M/M paranormal shifter romance. This series will contain scenes of graphic violence, graphic sex, graphic language, Mpreg, and graphic birth. What it will not be is an instant mate fairytale, as forces set out to destroy everything and everyone around him.

The story of DeMatteo Santiago, alpha of a shifter pack, continues in the second book in the series, Where Doubt Remains. The book starts off a little slow, but after a few chapters, it hit a good stride and I couldn’t stop reading from that point on.
DeMatteo and Sean are struggling with several things – Sean’s pregnancy (yes, a man being pregnant…it does get quite graphic sometimes), someone is still out to hurt the pride, and danger comes from all sides. There’s hardly any time to just sit down and enjoy each other’s company, but that’s not to say the book doesn’t have some romantic scenes or tender moments.
The story keeps getting better and better. The author has a fast-paced writing style, and the ability to tell an original, suspenseful story. I can’t wait to read what’s in store next for DeMatteo and his pack.

DeMatteo Santiago is the Alpha of one of the largest prides in North America. He’s young and successful, has a large family, and a devoted lover, but his lion side is worried with finding his perfect mate. When he finds his mate on opposite sides of the courtroom, it’s like a dream come true. He’s finally found his mate! But when ex-lovers, siblings, hunters, all come into play, he realizes finding his mate was the easy part: living long enough to be together is the tough part.

I enjoyed the whole lawyer/attorney angle. DeMatteo is a divorce lawyer, and his mate Sean turns out to be a lawyer too. Being a lawyer too, I thought this was very intriguing, and I loved the whole side of it. Lawyers don’t usually work well as couples, but they did so here. Sean and DeMatteo are very intriguing.

The plot is rollercoaster-fast, and a few of the twists took me by surprise. I can’t wait to read the second book.

Author: Annette Gisby
Genre: M/M Fantasy Romance

The neighbouring kingdoms of Oscia and Arcathia have been at a tentative peace for three years after centuries of warfare. Prince Severin of Arcathia has been brought up to put duty before all else and as the only son of the King and Queen, it is his duty to marry and produce an heir. His parents want him to marry an Oscian princess to cement that tentative peace. Unfortunately Severin isn’t interested in princesses. Now, if he had his pick of princes that would be another matter.

Havyn has been a slave all his life. When his aptitude for wizardry is discovered, he finds himself purchased and freed by Prince Severin and apprenticed to the royal wizard, Ildar. His duty is to stay chaste to keep his powers strong, but his feelings for Severin sorely test his resolve.

With kingdoms at war, the throne hanging in the balance, magic in the air, and outside forces trying to keep them apart, can the two men find happiness together, or is duty more important than love?

Mini-Review: Boots for the Gentleman, Traitor’s Daughter, Wayfinder

minireview

Time for some mini-reviews! What are mini-reviews, you ask? As the title suggests, these are short reviews, consisting of one paragraph tops, about a book. It’s a way to catch up on the books I’ve read a while ago, but never got around to reviewing.

Boots for the Gentleman

Title: Boots for the Gentleman

Author: Augusta Li and Eon de Beaumont

Genre: M/M Romance, Steampunk, Fantasy

Rating: 3 stars

Purchase: Amazon

Hired by a mysterious faerie gentleman to steal seemingly worthless artifacts, Querrilous Knotte is seen as a traitor by the humans of Halcyon. But as long as he’s getting paid, Querry doesn’t mind. When his client makes a cryptic comment about a certain house, Querry contacts his old flame Reg—a former street rat who now works in the Royal Archives—to learn if the property contains anything of value.

Though Reg has no answers for him, Querry learns there is indeed something precious in the house, something Reg is convinced will bring nothing but trouble. The armed guards that attack the thief prove Reg’s prediction true, and he can’t leave Querry to face it all alone. Not when Reg’s feelings for the man may not be as extinct as he’d thought.

The trouble is, Querry’s heart doesn’t just belong to Reg anymore, and surprisingly, Reg’s heart no longer belongs only to Querry. In the end, it may not even matter, because if Querry, Reg, and their hearts’ desire can’t stop Lord Thimbleroy from draining Halcyon’s magic, they won’t live long enough to regret their unresolved romance.

Review: The writing is…chaotic, to say the least. The editing is non-existent, and the book is riddled with errors and typos. The plot’s originality and creativity makes up for a lot of that, but ultimately I felt the book could’ve been better had there been more attention to detail.

The Traitor’s Daughter

Title: The Traitor’s Daughter (The Veiled Islezs Trilogy #1)

Author: Paula Brandon

Genre: Fantasy, Romance, Historical Fiction

Rating: 2 stars

Purchase: Amazon

Here’s the beginning of a lush, epic, wholly original new trilogy that shines with magic, mystery, and captivating drama.

On the Veiled Isles, ominous signs are apparent to those with the talent to read them. The polarity of magic is wavering at its source, heralding a vast upheaval poised to alter the very balance of nature. Blissfully unaware of the cataclysmic events to come, Jianna Belandor, the beautiful, privileged daughter of a powerful Faerlonnish overlord, has only one concern: the journey to meet her prospective husband.  But revolution is stirring as her own conquered people rise up against their oppressors, and Jianna is kidnapped and held captive at a rebel stronghold, insurance against what are perceived as her father’s crimes.

The resistance movement opens Jianna’s eyes―and her heart. Despite her belief in her father’s innocence, she is fascinated by the bold and charming nomadic physician and rebel sympathizer, Falaste Rione—who offers Jianna her only sanctuary in a cold and calculating web of intrigue. As plague and chaos grip the land, Jianna is pushed to the limits of her courage and resourcefulness, while virulent enemies discover that alliance is their only hope to save the human race.

Review: Bland protagonist, who I couldn’t connect with, even though I tried. The blurb is misleading – things like the zombies are only mentioned briefly. All the characters were unlikeable, and some of them showed only little personality.

Wayfinder

Title: Wayfinder

Author: C.E. Murphy

Genre: Urban Fantasy, Paranormal Romance

Rating: 4 stars

Purchase: Amazon

THE TRUTH WILL SET YOU FREE—IF IT DOESN’T KILL YOU FIRST

Lara Jansen is a truthseeker, gifted—or cursed—with the magical ability to tell honesty from lies. Once she was a tailor in Boston, but now she has crossed from Earth to the Barrow-lands, a Faerie world embroiled in a bloody civil war between Seelie and Unseelie. Armed with an enchanted and malevolent staff which seeks to bend her to its dark will, and thrust into a deadly realm where it’s hard to distinguish friend from foe, Lara is sure of one thing: her love for Dafydd ap Caerwyn, the Faerie prince who sought her help in solving a royal murder and dousing the flames of war before they consumed the Barrow-lands.

But now Dafydd is missing, perhaps dead, and the Barrow-lands are closer than ever to a final conflagration. Lara has no other choice: she must harness the potent but perilous magic of the staff and her own truthseeking talents, blazing a path to a long-forgotten truth—a truth with the power to save the Barrow-lands or destroy them.

Review: The cover persuaded me to give this one a shot. This is the second book in a series – which I didn’t know, but I could follow easily enough. Lara is an intriguing protagonist, and the whole ocncept of her gifts, and of truthseekers, is original and creative. The book was a blast from start to finish.

Book Review: The Emperor’s New Clothes by Aldous Mercer

RR1ATitle: The Emperor’s New Clothes

Author: Aldous Mercer

Genre: Science Fiction, M/M Romance

Age Group: Adult (18+)

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Purchase: Amazon, Smashwords

Imperial Agent Royce Ree needs to pull off the biggest heist the Universe has ever seen, or it’s bye-bye cushy government job, hello cleaning toilets in a dive-bar on Baga-V.

To succeed, he will need help from the last person he’d ever ask: his ex.
THIS IS THE FULL-LENGTH OMNIBUS EDITION (#1 – #5).

The Emperor’s New Clothes is amazing. It’s so hilarious, imaginative, and refreshingly original that I couldn’t put it down once I started reading. The main character, Royce Ree, has a sense of humor that completely matches my own.

Here’s an example from one of the first pages.

“Retrieval of what, agent?” asked the Spymaster, finally.

“Their impeccable sense of style, sir.”

“And yet…and yet what you actually brought me was their Royal Princess, intent upon marrying the Emperor.”

Royce didn’t dare shift his gaze from that perfectly neutral wall to look at the other occupant of the room.

“You also,” continued the Spymaster, “brought me half of Baldasshi’s parliament, six hundred Nova class battleships, and a menagerie of wild animals.”

“Psychic wild animals, sir,” ventured Royce.

Don’t tell me you can read that without even a hint of a smile, because I certainly can’t. Anyway, the book is filled with humoristic quirks like that, so I had a smile plastered on my face for most of my time reading. It’s also a very fast read. It was 328 pages in my .epub reader, but it went very fast. Now, back to the story.

Royce Ree is an imperial agent, who has a mission he can’t fail. Unfortunately, right at the start of it, he bumps into Les, the man he was once married to, and the last person he wanted to see. What happens next is of course, an argument, in the ventilation ducts of all places. They’re forced to work together, which means arguing more than cooperating for most of the time.

There were some minor flaws. The first was the ominipresent narrator. The book is told mostly from Royce’s POV, but every so often, the narrator jumps into Les’ mind, giving us his thoughts. Now, the omnipresent narrator (or whatever you want to call it, that’s the term my English teacher used in high school) isn’t always bad, but it’s not necessary here, and is actually a little confusing, because it doesn’t happen very often, almost like it happens without the author noticing.

Secondly, there are some typos. For example, on page 14 of my copy, right after the small introduction, there’s a sentence telling us where the characters are at (each chapter starts this way, which I don’t think is necessary either, it’s quite obvious where they are. It should only happen if we change perspective to other characters, not stick with the same ones) saying “Ventination Duct, Institute of Research and Development, Baldessh”. Which should actually be “Ventilation Duct”. Now, it’s no biggie, but the error glared at me from my screen because the words are bold and caps.

Anyway, those tiny annoyances didn’t really ruin anything. The plot was great, the characters were intriguing – I kind of want to invite Royce to every party I’m going to throw for the rest of my life, because he’s plain awesome – and the humor added an extra dimension to the story. The author is definitely very talented, and he’s crafted an imaginative, entertaining world, which I long to revisit. Please write more, and please hold on to that sense of humor.
