I’ve read a lot of books about faeries, but Halayda was one of my favorite books in this subgenre. Sylvia Imanthiya was betrayed by a trusted mentor and now hides on the fringes of society, caring for half-fae orphans and trading her alchemical creations on the black market. One night each season can she see her best friend, a man whose destiny is far above hers – King Taylan Ashkalabek.

Taylan knows he shouldn’t be friends with a moral, let alone change halayda vows. But a brutal alchemical attack leaves Sylvie with strange abilities, and Taylan wants to protect her at all costs.

The story was amazing, and I loved Sylvia and Taylan from the start. Each character was great, but Sylvie was my favorite. She was such a strong, intelligent young woman. The world building was outstanding, and made the book stand out from other faeriei books I’ve read. While the romance was heart-warming, it didn’t take center front, leaving room for the other storylines to develop.

It was a truly outstanding fantasy read, and I would recommend it to all fans of the genre.

The Sailweaver’s Son combines traditional fantasy with a dash of steampunk and takes young readers to a unique world—Etherium. A world where mountains rise like islands above a sea of clouds and adventurers travel the sky in sail-driven airships.

When fifteen year-old Tak rescues the survivor of an airship destroyed by one of the giant flammable gas bubbles mysteriously appearing in the sky of Etherium, the authorities react like a flock of startled grekks.

Admiral Scud accuses Tak of sabotage and treason. Tak’s father grounds him for reckless airmanship. Rumors spread that the bubbles are weapons devised by the Gublins, a race of loathsome but ingenious underground creatures. The King’s advisors call for war, hoping to win much-needed Gublin coal.

To clear his name, solve the mystery, and prevent a misguided war, Tak must do what anyone knows is suicide—visit the Gublins and find out what they’re up to. When the wizard’s adopted daughter, an oddly beautiful and irksomely intelligent girl from the Eastern kingdoms, asks Tak to help her do just that, he can’t say no.

The adventure will take Tak from the deepest underground caves to a desperate battle on Etherium’s highest mountaintop. It will force him to face his worst fears, and to grow up faster than he expected.

When I was a child, I once read a fantasy book about airships. It was amazing, and for years afterward, I fantasized about a vast world where people could travel in airships, and cities existed in the clouds. The Sailweaver’s Son brought those memories back to me, and reminded me of that fantasy world I had once imagined – except this time around, it has some steampunk elements, and it’s called Etherium.

World building is one of the toughest aspects about writing fantasy novels. The sky is the limit, but if you provide no science as to why suddenly ships would be able to sail on the air, or why empires in the clouds exist, that will leave a void in your book. The author handles this well here – the reasons are explained without being too scientific. It’s kept simple and understandable, and gives the world, despite being a fantasy world, a certain sense of realism. The author also provided sufficient background on the history of Etherium without straying too far from the story.

Tak is an intriguing character. He’s accused of sabotage after an airship gets destroyed. If he wants to clear his name, Tak will need to visit the Gublins, ingenious creatures who dwell underground, find out how they’re involved in the air crash he got accused of, and what their ultimate plan is. Luckily, Tak isn’t alone on his journey, but it will force him to face who he truly is, and what choices he’s capable of making.

I liked Tak, but I also enjoyed the secondary characters, in particular Brieze. The writing was fluent, the story creative and imaginative, and I would definitely recommend this book to all middle graders, young adults, and even adults who enjoy fantasy fiction.

Book Excerpt Freaksville

Book Excerpt

IMG_6708“I thought it was obvious.” I slowly run my fingers through his hair, letting my other hand trail down his chest to his stomach. Stopping right at the waistband of his pants, making his eyes glaze over. Seeing this reaction I can’t stop myself from kissing his neck. Once, twice…nibbling on his earlobe, he growls loudly. “Devin?”
“Yes?” he hisses.
“Are you enjoying yourself?” I yank his face close to mine.
He nods.
I barely let our lips touch when he grabs my hips and moves me on top of him where I’m straddling him. Under normal circumstances I would’ve yelped and punched him but we’re acting here.
Improv acting, maybe I should be an actress….
He gazes up at me, like we’re the only two in the room. I try to mimic the façade, hard to do when the table’s digging into your back. Grinning like he’s won the lottery, he moves some hair behind my ear. Resisting the urge to bite his fingers, I smile back. Like this isn’t bothering me or making me feel like a slut at all.
I’m so happy…ha.
“I don’t think I’ve ever—” I cut him off by leaning down and kissing him like his life depended on it. Which it kinda did, if you take a peek at the bigger picture. For example…say reporter dude writes a story about us suspicious kids and the town’s people research further? Some of my friends aren’t the best at lying. Eventually, it’d come out, and we’d all be dead. “If you say you love me, I’m really going to have to cut you,” I mumble against his lips.
“Thank you, Devlin,” he whispers back, digging his fingers into my hips. Instead of laughing like I want to, I kiss him again. Pushing my fingers through his soft hair, I hear him let out a soft moan which nearly makes me stop what I’m doing. Especially when he strengthens the kiss and pulls me tighter against him, letting me feel that he’s…oh seriously dude?

About the Author

Ashley’s favorite thing to write about is basically anything to do with myths, supernatural, paranormal…but upon occasion she’ll write about normal teenage life. It comes somewhat naturally to her considering she’s nineteen herself.
If the vampires or other supernatural beings still haven’t claimed her, you’ll most likely find her with her computer, working on whatever story plots invaded her mind at that time. Like most teenagers, she’s still unsure of what all she wants to do with her life. Become a marine biologist, graphic designer, editor, fashion designer? Mini-Review: Revealing Eden, Dark Kiss and Heart of Perdition

Time for some mini-reviews! What are mini-reviews, you ask? As the title suggests, these are short reviews, consisting of one paragraph tops, about a book. It’s a way to catch up on the books I’ve read a while ago, but never got around to reviewing.

Revealing Eden

Title: Revealing Eden

Author: Victoria Foyt

Genre: Young Adult, Dystopian, Fantasy

Eden Newman must mate before her 18th birthday in six months or she’ll be left outside to die in a burning world. But who will pick up her mate-option when she’s cursed with white skin and a tragically low mate-rate of 15%? In a post-apocalyptic, totalitarian, underground world where class and beauty are defined by resistance to an overheated environment, Eden’s coloring brands her as a member of the lowest class, a weak and ugly Pearl. If only she can mate with a dark-skinned Coal from the ruling class, she’ll be safe. Just maybe one Coal sees the Real Eden and will be her salvation her co-worker Jamal has begun secretly dating her. But when Eden unwittingly compromises her father’s secret biological experiment, she finds herself in the eye of a storm and thrown into the last area of rainforest, a strange and dangerous land. Eden must fight to save her father, who may be humanity’s last hope, while standing up to a powerful beast-man she believes is her enemy, despite her overwhelming attraction. Eden must change to survive but only if she can redefine her ideas of beauty and of love, along with a little help from her “adopted aunt” Emily Dickinson.

Review: This book was one dissapointment on top of the other. It’s filled with badly-masked racism. White people are discriminated against in this post-apocalyptic world, and overruled by black people, named the Coals. So the ruling class calls themselves Coals while the enslaved class are called Pearls. Right. The reverse discrimation is offensive. The writing isn’t good either, the characters are one-dimensional and boring. This is easily the most racistic book I’ve ever read.

Dark Kiss

I don’t do dangerous.

Smart, über-careful, ordinary Samantha-that’s me. But I just couldn’t pass up a surprise kiss from my number-one unattainable crush. A kiss that did something to me…something strange. Now I feel hungry all the time, but not for food. It’s like part of me is missing-and I don’t know if I can get it back.

Then there’s Bishop. At first I thought he was just a street kid, but the secrets he’s keeping are as intense as his unearthly blue eyes. If he’s what I think he is, he may be the only one who can help me. But something terrifying is closing in, and the one chance Bishop and I have to stop it means losing everything I ever wanted and embracing the darkness inside me….

NIGHTWATCHERS

When angels and demons must work together, something beyond evil is rising…

Review: Mixed feelings about this one. Samantha (Sam) was no intriguing protagonist at all. I didn’t like her very much, and she was pretty boring. I did like Bishop though, and I absolutely loved Kraven, although I’m not sure why. He has this great attitude, and he was mysterious. The plot was all right, but I expected more form the set up of angels and demons working together. The premise was great, but ultimately the book fell a little short.

Heart of Perdition

Elspeth Shaw prefers her solitary life to the tragic results that come from mixing in society. Elspeth is cursed: every mortal being who forms an attachment to her dies a horrible death. Yet when the doomed Lord Falmouth arrives in search of the very artifact that blights her, she hasn’t the will to refuse. But the price for cheating death may be more than any human can pay…

Review: Heart of Perdition does a good job portraying the era it’s situated in. It’s a gothic novel with steampunk elements and a paranormal mystery. However, the ideas don’t mix and match. The premise is great, but none of the ideas are executed the way they should, and none of it ties together at the ending. So while the idea was great, and this book had potential, it failed to deliver.
