At thirty-one Garrett Willigins has finally earned his private investigator’s badge. Unfortunately, the bills haven’t stopped coming and building a solid reputation won’t happen overnight. Forced to take employment wherever they can, Garrett and his miniature dragon partner Merle, must dirty their hands any way possible to make a buck. Shoveling manure, chasing cats, and dock duty seem to be the order of the day.

Working off back rent for a notorious gangster isn’t the safest of jobs on a good day, but when the other workers start turning up dead, Garrett finds himself elbow deep in a mystery that could spell a quick end to his short P.I. career.

Garrett’s Mulligan is an oddball of a book. I went in, not thinking I’d really like it, but then, by some stroke of luck and a great amount of talent on the author’s side, I ended up enjoying the book after all. Garrett Willigins, our main character, has finally managed to become a private investigator. Unfortunately building a solid reputation and actually getting some clients, isn’t something that’ll happen overnight. So Garrett and his miniature dragon partner Merle, head out to do some odd jobs to rank in some cash. They end up working for a notorious gangster, which puts them right in the middle of a P.I. investigation. The other workers start turning up dead, and Garrett and Merle must do whatever they can to solve the mystery before they’re next.

Garrett was an enjoyable, likeable character. He had a great sense of humor, and Merle took care of a good deal of comic relief as well. There were some instances that things seemed to happen almost coincidental, like the two of them ending up working for a notorious gangster, but I could live with that. The plot had a great mix of humor, mystery and fantasy.

I wish the cover would look nicer though, so more people would pick it up. This cover many not be too appealing, but the book has a rich plot, splendid characters and an unique storyline. The writing was fairly decent as well, although I felt another round of proofreading wouldn’t hurt.

All in all, if you like a mix of dragons, humans, ogres, gangsters, and a murder mystery, Garrett’s Mulligan would be an excellent reading choice.
