What Do Characters Want?
Before authors begin to write their stories they need to know three very important facts about their characters. What they want, why they want it, and what stops them from getting it. To learn these, authors sometimes interview their characters. The following are the abbreviated versions of the interviews I had with the three main characters of The Witch Salvation.
Can You Tell Me Who You Are?
Sure. I’m Anasztasia Mushati Seneslau the female protagonist of The Witch’s Salvation. But the name’s too big for me. Call me, Annie. Only my family calls me Anasztasia.
How old are you, Annie, and where were you born and raised?
I’m 18. I was born in New York City and raised there. I’m a true big city girl and I love it.
What do you want?
I want to become immortal.
Why?
Unfortunately, I am a disgrace to my immortal family. My mortality is a secret from absolutely everyone except my immediate family. Should my mortality be revealed, my family will lose everything—their historical throne, their titles, their power, their reputation, everything. I can’t disgrace them. I can’t bring them down.
How can you become immortal?
A witch who lives in the Carpathian Mountains, very far from Manhattan, is the only person who can make me immortal. But my family turned her into a witch over 550 years ago, so I really don’t think she is going to be very accommodating. Also, and don’t tell my family, I’m not sure if I want to really become immortal. They want me to. I don’t even want to be a princess. I don’t want to sound trite, but I just want to be free.
Can You Tell Me Who You Are?
Must I?
Yes, it’s the only way I’m going to get to know you and write truthfully about you.
Then if I must, I’m Matthias Bogdan Craiovescu the male protagonist of your novel and the bloody heir to some archaic historical throne.
How old are you and where were you born and raised?
I’m 18 years old. I was born in Targoviste, Romania but went to school in England.
What do you want, Matthias?
To find my father.
Why?
Because I bloody hell need him, that’s why. I need him to stand between me and my overbearing, honor-obsessed grandfather, the prince of a throne that exists only in history except in the minds and lives of his immortal followers and the rest of my obnoxious family.
What happened to your father?
He was sent back to1457 by that ancient witch to find some golden cup and return it to her. She promised my father that she would make me immortal like the rest of my family if he did that. That witch is the only help one who can help me. But I can’t trust the old hag. Look what she did to my father.
Can you tell me who you are?
My name is Strigoaic. I am the antagonist of your novel.
Can I ask you how old you are and where you were born and raised?
I am over 550 years old. I was born and raised in the Carpathian Mountains. They are still my home.
What do you want?
What do I want? I want my humanity, mortal. I want to be a girl again.
Why?
I am trapped. I am not a witch. I want my real name back.
You’re a witch. Why can’t you just make yourself become a girl again?
It does not work that way. Only the two mortals born of immortals can reverse my fate. This can only be accomplished by them going back in time to 1457 and returning with the Golden Cup. But the day they must return to is the most dangerous in my history and the history of their families. Yet, should they do my bidding, I shall make them immortal like their families and break the curse that keeps one family imprisoned in the old boundaries of Wallachia and the other exiled from it.
These brief interviews with the major characters of The Witch’s Salvation told me who they were, what they wanted, and why. They also told me in their voices, which was an added bonus. If you’re an author, give the interviews a try. You’d be surprised what you will learn about your characters.
