Asher Stone didn’t want to be a hero. After spending two years recovering from an isolating drug habit, his life was getting on track. He had a girlfriend who he loved very much. He was holding down a job and had a repaired relationship with his mother. One day, Asher was attacked by a manticore that escaped the clutches an order of magi and his world gets turned upside down. Now, Asher is dealing with old temptations and new problems and a destiny that he has to embrace or the fate of the world will crash down on him. The only thing Asher can hope is that Blessings and Hope do spring eternal in this first book in a series.
Spring Blessings is a refreshing novel in the urban fantasy genre, offering a protagonist the reader can truly root for, and who acts like a real, living and breathing human being. Way too often in urban fantasy do the characters end up being caricatures, standard stereotypes, but here that’s not the case at all.
Asher is just about the most reluctant hero I’ve ever read about. He spent the last two years recovering from a drug habit, and did eveything he could to get his life back on track. But when he gets attacked by a manticore that escaped the clutches of an order of magi, Asher’s life will never be the same agian. His destiny is linked to the fate of the world, and he gets more responsibilities than he asked for. Old temptation try to lure him back into the life he swore he left behind. The drug habit, the constant temptation, and Asher’s personality, make him stand out from other characters. They make him unique. He’s a struggling hero, inherently, deeply flawed, but trying his best to be better than the person he once was.
The plot itself was entertaining, and has some original elements. This is a solid first book in a brand new series, and I look forward to reading the sequel.
