Katriona Hughes has no idea how she’s managed to find herself in 16th century Scotland, but she’s beginning to think the gigantic emerald gem she picked up on an archeological site may have had something to do with it.  Wanting nothing more than to return to her own time, Kat is betrayed by the first person she meets and forced into a marriage with a loathsome stranger. Now running for her life, Kat meets the one man who deserves her trust, but can she give it to him.

Nick Mackall is happy to finally be back in his beloved Scotland after accidentally being transported to twenty first century San Francisco and spending the last two years of his life there.  His home and family are calling to him, but things are not about to go smoothly for the handsome highlander as he meets a young woman fleeing her husband and an old foe returns from the dead.  Two things are certain – he must gain the woman’s trust in order to save her and he must stop his foe from unleashing the power of an imprisoned sorcerer.

In Her Trusted Highlander, Katriona Hughes stumbles into 16th century Scotland after picking up an emerald gem on an archeological site. Although she wants nothing more than to return to the present time, she rapidly gets stuck in the past – the first person she meets tricks her and forces her into marriage with a stranger. Kat has to run for her life, and in doing so, meets one man she can trust: Nick Mackall.

Nick is happy to be back in Scotland after being transported to the twnety-first century and spending two years there. He longs to go home to his family but when he meets a young woman who came from the era he just escaped from, he decides to help her. In doing so, he’ll need to face an old foe who has returned from the dead.

I liked the double time travel – with Nick travelling from the present to the past but originally being from the past, and Katriona travelling from the present to the past and originally being from the present. It was a cool addition (usually there’s only one person doing the time travelling!). This made it easier for Nick to relate to Katriona and visa versa. The key focus on trust was great too, and Nick really showed that Kat could trust him.

The book isn’t just historical – it also has an element of the paranormal, and I really enjoyed that. As usual, Jennae Vale succeeds in bringing realistic characters and describing the setting so wonderfully the reader can just imagine being there. Recommended to anyone who enjoys historical romance with some magic and/or time travel.
