About the Book

Title: Work of Art: An Intention of Flowers

Author: Ken La Salle

Genre: YA / Contemporary Fiction

Oily pavement.

Thick tempera paint.

A parking lot filled with history, fear, and regret.

A young man named Joseph Arillo sits in the parking lot and paints the pavement with flowers.

And Andy Hollis steps in it.

As the new art teacher at Santa Ana High School, he’s too curious about Joseph’s Flowers and unravels both of their lives in his pursuit for answers.

He learns that it’s all part of a rite of passage, an absurd test started by Joseph Arillo’s father, the suspiciously world-renowned artist named only Tom. Which also connects to the drama teacher at Santa Ana High, Katie Bustos. Whose daughter, Desiree, may or may not be dating Joseph. Who is putting himself in danger from a local gang, the lot’s mysterious history, and the police.

Andy puts himself in danger of losing his job, his home, and his freedom. If he can’t solve the riddle of Joseph’s Flowers, both of their lives will go up in smoke – despite any help from Winny, the old, Slovakian bureaucrat at school, or his students, or Tom himself.

But is Tom trying to help? And is Joseph really up to his father’s test?

And is Andy really fit to be a teacher? He doesn’t understand kids, can’t get to school on time, and… doesn’t appear to care about art or families or anything. But Joseph’s Flowers will challenge everything Andy believes: about himself, about the world, and most importantly of all about art.

Before Andy and Joseph are finished, they will witness the power art has to provide inspiration, to waken our hearts, and to shatter everything you ever believed about humanity.

An Intention of Flowers is the first book in a 5-book series, modestly titled Work of Art, about growing into the person you always wanted to be, making the most of what you have to give and not just what you have, and the power in each of us when we chose to be ourselves.

Author Interview

1) Can you tell us a little about High Hopes?

In High Hopes, three old friends are confronted with a secret from twenty years ago. An adopted child traces her birth mother. The father knows nothing about her and when the truth is revealed, it rocks them to the core. They think they know everything about each other but are shocked to uncover jealousy and hurt simmering beneath the surface. High Hopes is the name of a place in the book and also represents the theme of having “high hopes” for the future.

2) Where did the inspiration for this story come from?

I’ve long had a fascination for secrets, how people go to great lengths to hide things and what happens when the truth comes out.

3) How long have you been writing?

Over twenty years. After having stories published in womens’ magazines, I moved on to longer works as I always wanted to know what happened next to my characters. I’ve now published two novels – High Hopes and Another Summer. Writing is my therapy and not as expensive as buying shoes.

4) What do you love most about writing romance and women’s fiction?

It’s lovely to escape to a different world sometimes. I do like a happy ending and I enjoy fitting all the pieces of the puzzle together without it seeming contrived. And I’m particularly fond of the misunderstood rebel, the bad boy with a soft centre.

5) What was the hardest part of writing this book?

I don’t find the writing itself difficult but finding time to do it is enormously frustrating. I have a full-time job and a lovely family, so fitting in quality writing time requires forward planning and a tendency towards anti-social behavior, which does not come naturally to a closet rock-chick like myself.

6) How long did it take to write the book from start to finish?

I published Another Summer in Dec 2014 then High Hopes in April 2016. So, just over a year. As I have a full-time job, I write mainly at weekends. During the week, I mull over the next bit of the plot so I’m ready to go as soon as I sit down at my computer. I walk around with a notebook and a purple pen, working out my next scene. I have become that mad woman talking to herself on the bus.

7) What is your writing routine? Are there things you absolutely have to do before you sit down and write?

I like a quiet house so I can walk around talking to myself as I work through my scenes. I always have a supply of new purple pens and a bowl of sweets – the more childish and embarrassing the better! I also like a glass of sparkling water in a cocktail glass.

8) Can you tell us about your editing process?

I tend to write in scenes which are mostly dialogue. In my next draft, I add in the setting and necessary explanation of what’s going on. I then formulate it all into chapters with enticing breaks to keep the reader hooked. My problem is knowing when to stop. I always want to polish and tweak until I drive myself mad. When I start waking up in the middle of the night because I’ve dreamed about one perfect word, I know it’s time to let it go.

9) If you could meet three authors, dead or alive, who would they be?

Three of my all-time favourite books are Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell; Scruples by Judith Krantz and The Shell Seekers by Rosamunde Pilcher. They’re all big, complex stories with a cast of thousands. I’d love to know how those authors kept track of everything.

10) What’re you working on at the moment? Any new novels in the pipeline?

I’m working on my third novel which I’m really enjoying. My progress was a bit delayed by my daughter having the most adorable baby (not that I’m biased!) I also have some short stories in progress. Readers loved my story Painting Rainbows so I’m hoping they’re keen for more while they’re waiting for the next novel. All my work is stand-alone, although I do seem to have developed a common theme of placing a house at the centre of the action.

About the Book

“It was one stolen night. He was my soulmate and I’d never felt more alive. I couldn’t tell him I got pregnant. It would’ve ruined everything. But now his daughter wants to meet him and I need to make things right.” Another tear escaped down her cheek. “Everybody’s going to hate me.”

Three friends are rocked when a 20-year secret blows their world apart. Steamy, passionate, and unpredictable. If you like sizzling love triangles you won’t want to miss it.

Grace has kept her heart-breaking secret for twenty years – a love child she gave up for adoption. She was a penniless student – how could she raise a baby alone? Then she receives a letter out of the blue. Her long-lost daughter is searching for answers.

Her two best friends are married and don’t know one of them is the girl’s father. If Grace confesses now, the marriage will be destroyed and it will surely be the end of their lifelong friendship. But what choice does Grace have?

Set in the wilds of Poldark-country – the stormy cliffs and windswept beaches of picturesque Cornwall – an engrossing saga filled with suspense, simmering jealousy and heartbreak. Can a future be built on the quicksand of secrets and lies? Surely there can be no second chances when three friends discover they don’t know each other at all.

Edith just can’t resist her overwhelmingly powerful attraction to Alex . . .
Edith is terribly hurt when Alex disappears after their first romantic date. But she is unable to put her ultimate experience of sex and love with him out of her mind. Then, a month later, he is at her door, sexy and handsome. She cannot resist temptation and leads him directly to her bed, no questions asked.
A love as strong and crazy as this must be Edith’s destiny
In love and enchanted, Edith is convinced that their relationship is one of destiny, since it so much mirrors that between her grandparents, who had been murdered in the Holocaust two generations earlier. Love never dies. After the two were brutally murdered the love that nestled in their hearts went up to heaven, where it belonged. It was simply waiting to find new life in Edith and Alex.
But will Alex stick around to see it through?
But Alex, a scientist, is unwilling to accept inexplicable coincidences that threaten his freedom. He views this love as a passing adventure, to last only until he falls in love with the next woman. Will Alex seek to defy Edith’s destiny?

Mystery & Survival is the second book in the From Siberia with Love series. However, the book can be read as a stand-alone quite easily. Edith is hurt when Alex disappears after their first romantic date, but when he appears at her door, his sexy and handsome self, about a month later, she can’t resist temptation. The two of them end up under the sheets again and although part of Edith knows she can’t let him do this to her – show up for some wild, passionate sex, and then disappear on her – she doesn’t know how to stop herself from wanting them.

Edith is looking to build a future with Alex. But Alex is a scientist, a down-to-earth man who sees his adventure with Edith as just that: an adventure. Theirs isn’t an epic love that transcends time. Edith is just the woman he’s falling for now, until he falls for the next woman. Or is she more than that?

I quite liked this book although it was different from what I expected. Edith and Alex have very different viewpoints when it comes to their relationship, but they do connect in sveeral other ways. Edith is a little naive, but she has her heart in the right place.

Book Excerpt The Sweet Spot

The Sweet Spot by Anneli Lort (Tour Banner)

Book Excerpt

Almost half an hour later, Sebastian was exhausted but still holding his own.  He’d confessed his sins and asked for forgiveness on prime-time national television, and it was almost over.

“I’d pretty much hit rock bottom when I had to fulfil the commitment I’d made to write my autobiography. I tried to back out of it, fought tooth and nail with Richie to get it canned, tried to give back the advance I’d taken from the publisher.  You name it, I did it, but in the end, as I sit here now, I can say that I’m so very glad that it went ahead as planned.”

Piers smiled knowingly at the audience: “Olivia Carmichael, I presume?”

“Good God, does nothing escape your beady eyes, Piers?” Sebastian joked. “Once a tabloid hack always a tabloid hack, eh? And there’s me thinking you were too highbrow for the gossip magazines these days.”

The audience, sensing an upwards shift in Sebastian’s mood, were delighted that he seemed to be in control of his host.

“Well Sebastian, there’ve been some photographs of you both making the rounds, and she’s been on your arm at most of the major events in the last year, so it isn’t hard to put two and two together.” He turned to the audience: “And for the benefit of our viewers, if you don’t know, Olivia Carmichael is an award-winning sports journalist who was commissioned to help write Sebastian’s life story.”

“Yes, Olivia’s been instrumental in my recovery, she made me want to get better, and that’s what helped me find form on the golf course again.  My game has always been linked to my emotions. If I’m happy I play well, if I’m not, well we all know what happens.  My freefall from the world golf rankings is testament to that.”

“So how did she get through to you when your close friends and family couldn’t?” asked Piers.

“She didn’t put up with any of my crap from day one,” Sebastian explained.  “She took me on and came out on top, and made me see how badly I’d been behaving.  She made me want to be a better person, and I hadn’t felt like that for a very long time.  Look Piers, I’m not going to go into detail and tell you the how and the why. I know you want me to, but let’s just say that this extraordinary woman saved me.”

“And where is she now? Are you together?” Piers was on the edge of his seat, almost as excited as his audience.

“Wow, that certainly was unexpected, it’s not often we have a Romeo and Juliet moment on my show,” Piers exclaimed.  “That was a brave thing to do, don’t you agree ladies and gentlemen?” He almost burst with joy. He knew this would be front-page news, and he had the exclusive.

“So, Sebastian, don’t keep us in suspense, where will you be if Olivia comes calling?”

“Piers, even you know where I’ll be,” he replied. “At The Open Championship in the home of golf, St Andrews, taking on the world and hoping to bring home the Claret Jug.  It’s the one I’ve always wanted to win and this is my year. I feel good about my game. Hell, I feel great about it. I can’t wait.”

“And in taking on the world you’re also taking on Troy McLoud, who is, in fact, the defending champion.”

“Yes, and I’m going to beat him,” Sebastian grinned.

The audience was on its feet, cheering and whooping, willing their new favourite golfer to succeed. It took a full minute for Piers to restore peace.

“Well, I think we can safely say you’ve won over our audience, and I’m certain the viewers at home too. You’ve gained some new fans today, Sebastian.  You’ve given us an unusually open and honest insight into your life. You’ve been weighed and measured, and let me tell you, you’ve not been found wanting.  I think I can speak for everyone when I say that I wish you the very best of luck, both on and off the golf course.”

Sebastian ginned. “Piers, I’d like to say it’s been a blast, but that would be my first lie of the night.  Thank you for giving me the stage to set the record straight. The time to move on is now, and I’m grasping it with both hands.”

Piers had the last word. “It’s been a real pleasure having you on, and thank you for your genuinely honest answers to some tough questions. Ladies and gentlemen, Sebastian Bloom.”

The room erupted once more and Sebastian felt the weight of the world lifting from his shoulders. All he had to do now was win The Open Championship and convince Olivia to come back to him.

About the Book

Like a Phoenix from the Ashes, True Love Can Arise from Illness and Death.

An aspiring fashion designer, Amy’s life changes when her mother suddenly falls ill. Her mother needs lifesaving surgery, and it’s up to Amy to acquire the funds.

A famous and highly valued football player, Josh has an incredible lifetime of excellence in his sport. His life crumbles when his mother and sister are killed in a car crash while on their way to see his last game of the season. Distraught with self-loathing and self-blame, Josh descends into a life of alcoholism and loose women that threatens to ruin his football career and possibly his life.

Mission Impossible?

A friend sets Amy up with a job as a PA at the LA PR Agency which represents Josh’s football team, the Gladiators. Her task is to whip Josh into shape mentally and physically for the next football season.

From Worst Person in the World to Love of a Lifetime?

Shocked to her core, Amy discovers that Josh is the worst person in the world. His daily protests, unsavory habits and loose women are unbelievable. Josh is equally annoyed with Amy. As Amy gets Josh to see some hope, a spark is kindled…

Will that spark grow into a flaming romance? Or will they return to their regular lives?

A series of female giggles pierced the silence. She looked upstairs to where the sound resonated and saw two women in barely there bikini’s running down the steps. Behind them was Joshua Mancini himself wearing a pair of shorts and a black t-shirt. He was chasing the women.

Amy geared herself up to meet her new employer. Even if she was appalled at the state of the house she had to make that first impression a good one.

As he got closer she saw that he was truly handsome indeed with his sleek muscle and untamed pride. What she saw online was totally drool-worthy, but those images had nothing on the real-life Joshua Mancini who was six feet six, extremely well built with a ridged wall of a chest that bulged against the soft fabric of his t- shirt. He was breathtaking to look at with his black shiny, spiky hair, tanned skin and piercing eyes with an unusual mix of blue and green. Turquoise. That was the color. It was turquoise like the sea in somewhere like the Caribbean. Not that she’d ever been, but she’d seen enough pictures.

He was the kind of man that made you want to stare, even against your will. She quickly adjusted herself and her focus. It would do her no good to go all girlie weak-kneed and turn into some babbling buffoon in front of him. She had to look professional.

He looked her over with appreciation as he made his descent down the stairs and stopped a few paces away from her, making her feel like a dwarf even in her heels that added an extra two inches to her mere five feet and four inches. The women joined him and giggled as they tried to fix each other’s hair.

“Good, the stripper’s here,” he said with a wide smile that revealed super gorgeous dimples in his exotic high cheek bones. It took her a second or two to realize that he was referring to her.

“No, no I’m from the agency,” she replied quickly.
“I’m Amy, your new PA.” That was when he looked up at her and narrowed his eyes. “If you could just point me in the direction of the office I’ll get started.”

There, that was professional.

To her surprise, however, he started to laugh. It was the usual sort of off balanced laughter you’d expect from someone who was truly wasted and didn’t know what they were even laughing at. “Those people are jokers.”

“This is no joke. I’ll take care of all your paperwork and everything.” She offered a smile.

“Ha, ha. Everything? Well you can start in there.” He set his square jaw in a firm line and pointed to the mess in the living room. “Clean that up will you.”

Her mouth dropped. She attempted to protest but he just walked away, leaving her there to gawk at the crazy mess.

Title: The Sullivans Boxed Set

Author: Bella Andre

Genre: Contemporary Romance

More than 6 million readers have already fallen in love with the Sullivans! Now get ready to meet your new favorite family in Bella Andre’s New York Times and USA Today bestselling contemporary romances with the first three books in the #1 hit series.

“Not since Nora Roberts has anyone been able to write a big family romance series with every book as good as the last! Bella Andre never disappoints!” Revolving Bookcase Reviews

Chloe Peterson is having a bad night. A really bad night. The large bruise on her cheek can attest to that. And when her car skids off the side of a wet country road straight into a ditch, she’s convinced even the gorgeous guy who rescues her in the middle of the rain storm must be too good to be true. Or is he?

As a successful photographer who frequently travels around the world, Chase Sullivan has his pick of beautiful women, and whenever he’s home in San Francisco, one of his seven siblings is usually up for causing a little fun trouble. Chase thinks his life is great just as it is–until the night he finds Chloe and her totaled car on the side of the road in Napa Valley. Not only has he never met anyone so lovely, both inside and out, but he quickly realizes she has much bigger problems than her damaged car. Soon, he is willing to move mountains to love–and protect–her, but will she let him?

For thirty-six years, Marcus Sullivan has been the responsible older brother, stepping in to take care of his seven siblings after their father died when they were children. But when the perfectly ordered future he’s planned for himself turns out to be nothing but a lie, Marcus needs one reckless night to shake free from it all.

Nicola Harding is known throughout the world by only one name – Nico – for her catchy, sensual pop songs. Only, what no one knows about the twenty-five year old singer is that her sex-kitten image is totally false. After a terrible betrayal by a man who loved fame far more than he ever loved her, she vows not to let anyone else get close enough to find out who she really is…or hurt her again. Especially not the gorgeous stranger she meets at a nightclub, even though the hunger – and the sinful promises – in his dark eyes make her want to spill all her secrets.

Gabe Sullivan risks his life every day as a firefighter in San Francisco. But after learning a brutal lesson about professional boundaries, he knows better than to risk his heart to his fire victims ever again. Especially the brave mother and daughter he saved from a deadly apartment fire…and can’t stop thinking about.

Megan Harris knows she owes the heroic firefighter everything for running into a burning building to save her and her seven-year-old daughter. Everything except her heart. Because after losing her navy pilot husband five years ago, she has vowed to never suffer through loving – and losing – a man with a dangerous job again.

Author Interview with Michael Mazza

Today I’m interviewing Michael Mazza, author of “That Crazy Perdfect Someday”. Welcome!

  1. How long have you been writing?

I’ve been writing fiction for roughly twenty years.

  1. What is your favorite genre to write?

Contemporary literary fiction.

  1. Which genre have you never tried before, but would you like to try out?

I wouldn’t mind taking a shot at a thriller. But with so many great ones, I’d wade in cautiously.

  1. Please tell us about your book.

That Crazy Perfect Someday is the story of a gutsy pro surfer who risks everything she loves to rediscover who she is. It’s a story of elite athletic competition, treachery, forlorn love and loneliness. But the heart of it is a family drama that tests the bonds of a father and daughter teetering on the edge.

  1. Which character was your favorite, and why? Which character was your least favorite, and why?

Where I have a great affinity for Mafuri Long, the main character, I have a soft spot for Nixon, the teenage Ferrari-driving pro gamer. As I followed him around, he revealed himself to be a sweet-intentioned, smart and lonely kid with a big heart. He’s socially challenged and trying desperately to fit in. If he were real, I’d want to mentor him. Perhaps that’s why I have a deeper connection to this character. My least favorite? Sorry for a cliché answer but it’s true. I love them all.

  1. What was the hardest part about writing your book?

Writing it was the easy part. Publishing it, on the other hand, felt near impossible.

  1. What is your writing routine? Are there things you absolutely need to start writing?

Any parent with young children will appreciate that there is little time to one’s self. The only writing time available to me when my two boys were young was before they woke in the morning. So I decided to begin my day around 5:00-5:30 am. I’d fix my breakfast and jasmine tea, settle in, fire up my desktop computer, and write for an hour to an hour and a half before the daily whirlwind began. Now that they’ve grown I’ve maintained this writing routine. It’s 5:37 am as I write this interview.

  1. How long did it take you to write your book from start to finish?

The first draft took about a year with another eighteen months of re-writes.

  1. Can you tell us about your editing process?

I usually like to finish a story and put it in my digital drawer, get away from it for a few months, and then revisit it. Errors and dumb stuff become glaringly obvious when I come back to it months later with a fresh perspective. Then I find it important to have readers who will also point out other dumb stuff and plot holes and things that work and don’t work. Then it’s back to the draft.

  1. Is this book part of a series? If so, how many installments do you have planned?

Where it’s not a series, I can see spinning off a character or two into another novel or short story.

  1. Do you have any advice for aspiring authors?

Yes. Brace yourself for an onslaught of rejection. It’s part of the gig. I asked T.C. Boyle this same wide-eyed question at a book signing. He swept his arm in a wide arc as if to describe the enormity of the room where he just lectured and said. “I could paper this entire place with my rejection letters.”

  1. Why should everyone read your book?

To my knowledge, this is the first novel to give voice to a professional woman surfer. It chronicles what it’s like to compete in a male-dominated sport, the frustrations women face, the rigors and hope. Also—I hope that my readers agree—it’s a very fast, fun, and entertaining read.

  1. If you could meet three authors, dead or alive, which authors would you choose?

J.D, Salinger, J.M. Coetzee, and Theodor Geisel, aka Dr. Seuss.

  1. What inspired you to write your book?

My son took to surfing at an early age. On occasion, we’d ride waves together. But then he started to surf big and left me behind. When he began to compete in the NSSA, the contest schedule dictated long and tiring trips up and down the California coast. I became a surf dad, carting him to each contest for nearly a decade. This is where I absorbed surf culture first hand and witnessed the talented men and women competing first hand. I’ve never come across a novel about a professional female surfer and thought how much I’d like to write a smart portrayal of one living in a world of high-stakes competition and the family drama that comes with it.

That Crazy Perfect Someday

The year is 2024. Climate change has altered the world’s wave patterns. Drones crisscross the sky, cars drive themselves, and surfing is a new Olympic sport. Mafuri Long, UCSD marine biology grad, champion surfer, and only female to dominate a record eighty-foot wave, still has something to prove. Having achieved Internet fame, along with sponsorship from Google and Nike, she’s intent on winning Olympic gold. But when her father, a clinically depressed former Navy captain and widower, learns that his beloved supercarrier, the USS Hillary Rodham Clinton, is to be sunk, he draws Mafuri into a powerful undertow. Conflicts compound as Mafuri’s personal life comes undone via social media, and a vicious Aussie competitor levels bogus doping charges against her. Mafuri forms an unlikely friendship with an awkward teen, a Ferrari-driving professional gamer who will prove to be her support and ballast. Authentic, brutal, and at times funny, Mafuri lays it all out in a sprightly, hot-wired voice. From San Diego to Sydney, Key West, and Manila, That Crazy Perfect Someday goes beyond the sports/surf cliché to explore the depths of sorrow and hope, yearning and family bonds, and the bootstrap power of a bold young woman climbing back into the light.

Title: The D.B. List

Author: Rebekah L. Purdy

Genre: YA Romance

Seventeen-year-old Ellie Gebhardt has spent the last three years of high school in psychotherapy, trying to fix a very broken her. And her shrink (or therapist as she likes to be called) seems to think that in order to totally heal, she needs to recognize all the good and bad things that have led her to this point. As if a trip down memory lane will suddenly make her better.
She’s given a “homework” assignment to create two lists. One with nothing but happy memories and thoughts on it (otherwise known as the ‘happy rainbow farting unicorns list’). And the other with everything negative that Ellie thinks contributed to “the” day she could no longer cope.
So begins Ellie’s Douche Bag list (or D.B. List for short). And once she gets started, it’s hard to stop remembering all the jerks, the petty crap, the times she’d been bullied or the main focus of the rumor mill.
So when nice guy, Ky Laramie, walks into her life, Ellie instantly puts her shields up. But as she gets to know him and his family, she wonders if she can dare to put herself out there again. Because as everyone knows, once a candle is lit, the wind can always blow it out. And Ellie couldn’t handle it if Ky ends up atop of the D.B. List.

Author Bio

I was born and raised in Michigan (just look for the giant mitten on the map—it’ll likely throw a snowball at you). I spent most of my time in Michigan, but while in the army got to call KS, SC, MO, and CA home for awhile as well.
As a kid my family moved around a lot. Try spending both your freshman and senior years at new schools (yeah, loads of fun). I could’ve changed my name to “new girl”.
I love writing for teens because those are the years I remember falling in love with most of my favorite books. Some of the authors I couldn’t put down were L.J. Smith, Christopher Pike, R.L. Stine, Richie Tankersley Cusick, Joan Lowery Nixon, Lois Duncan, amongst several others.
My husband and I have a large family. There are six kids total! So we have LOTS of fun on vacations (although hours on the road, cooped up in the Expedition is kind of stressful—although we pass the time with MAD LIBS and hoping no one gets carsick).
