Monsters come in many forms, and not everyone knows a monster when they see one. After three hundred years of monstrous, feral elves plaguing the island nation of Selkirk, everyone believes they know what a monster is. Humans have learned to live with their savage neighbors, enacting a Clearing every four years to push the elves back from their borders. The system has worked for centuries, until after one such purge, a babe was found in the forest.

As Tallis grows, she discovers she isn’t like everyone else. There is something a little different that makes people leery in her presence, and she only ever makes a handful of friends. But when the elves gather their forces and emerge from the forests literally hissing Tallis’s name like a battle mantra, making friends is the least of her troubles. Tallis and her companions find themselves on an unwilling journey to not only clear her name, but to stop the elves from ravaging her homeland.

Growing up, I loved books like Robin Hobb’s fantasy works, The Magician series by Raymond E. Feist, The Shannara Chronicles by Terry Brooks… But it’s been a while since I’ve read books that reminded me of these classics. That is, until I read The Monster of Selkirk Book 1: The Duality of Nature. This is the first book I’ve read in years that had a similar epic feel.
The characters are phenomenal. They’re unique, entertaining, they have genuine feelings and emotions, background stories and habits. My favorite one is Tallis, the main character, who struggles with how different she is from everyone else. Luckily she makes some friends who accept her for who she is, and who are willing to put everything on the line to save her.
The writing style pulled me in right from the start, the world-building was top notch, allowing the reader to dive into a fantasy world without feeling overwhelmed by the technicalties or politics of this world, and the plot is so fast-paced, so unpredictable, that once you start reading, you just have to read until the end. Even if that means, like in my case, reading until two in the morning.
I recommend this book to all fans of fantasy novels with elves, kick-ass characters and excellent writing. I can’t wait to read the sequel.
(Also, I’m totally in love with the cover, and it fits the story so well!)

Book Review Curse of the Sea

Title: Curse of the Sea
Author: Joni Parker
Genre: Urban Fantasy
Rating: 4,5 stars
Purchase: Amazon
Review copy provided by Enchanted Book Promotions in exchange for an honest review.

A NATO training exercise goes terribly wrong when five warships from different countries are mysteriously transported to Eledon, the Realm of the Elves. The warrior, Lady Alexin, is charged to escort the troops back home to London in the year 2031 with the aid of the Wizard Ecstasy and a magic shrinking potion. Yet, when the authorities question her story, Alex is detained and imprisoned under suspicion of terrorism. Caught in a web of politics, betrayal and bungling bureaucracy, the confusing world of the future will push her magical gifts to their limit, and her own future will hang in the balance, caught between “justice” and the place she calls home.

I don’t want to give out many spoilers, but Curse of the Sea is really unlike anything you might expect. Even if you’ve read Joni Parker’s other books, it stands out. It’s different. It’s urban fantasy, but also has elements of epic fantasy – we have elves, wizards, shrinking potions, magic, a whole new world next to our own. I’ve read several Joni Parker books before (read my reviews of Gossamer, Noble Magic and The Blue Witch) and I’m always amazed by how the author comes up with so many amazing plots and stories.

And then the characters! Lady Alexin is really one of my favorite characters ever and I was glad she played the main part again in this book, I have to admit that. She’s been through so much already, yet new adventures always loom over the horizon, and no matter what life throws at her, she always stands strong.

The switch and overflow between London and Eledon was well done too, and as usually, I really enjoyed the writing. Joni Parker is an author with an incredible imagination, solid writing skills, and the keen ability to craft a memorable, relatable main character who every reader will root for.

An excerpt from Oak Seer – Chapter One

Heavy spring rains flooded the road to Langmire. The village sprouted to the north of Stirling along the River Teith. It smelled old to Effie, full of moldy timbers, damp leaves, and rusting iron. The collection of buildings, crofters’ homes mostly, sagged like the slumped back of a crone. Grey smoke wafted from a few blackened chimneys that sprouted from thatched roofs. Someone baked fresh bread. She caught it on the wind, and another something sweeter. Eager for a warm hearth and a cup of honeyed tea, she licked her parched lips. She’d travelled a full day to reach the village. She’d come because Conall Murray had begged her, because without her an innocent woman would hang.

In the heart of the village grew a stout oak. Muckle Ben the locals called it, Effie had once heard. They’d carved a Green Man into its bark long ago, during a time when such things held power. Now banners pronouncing some celebration hung from its limbs more often than not, but none remained there currently. Its trunk stood as somber as an undertaker. Chickens picked at worms in the upturned soil near its roots, and a lone hound howled at the rustling leaves as the branches creaked above.

Fergus Alpin hacked into his handkerchief, a wet, miserable noise she’d had to contend with the entire journey from Stirling. The Fey Finder sat across from her in the steam carriage’s tight compartment. His wrinkled face was spotted and thin, and he kept tugging his coat tighter about his frail bones. She tried to avoid his gaze, but nothing adorned the compartment for her to study, and she could only stare out the window for so long before feeling rude.

“I’ll do the speaking,” the man said. “You will remain silent.” The quiver at his lip turned into another fit of hacking, yet she still heard his mumbling. “Send a fey to catch a fey, and one with paps at that!”

The steam carriage rocked and bounced, splashing through the flooded road as if fording a stony riverbed. Its benches were worn and hard, the padding flattened from years of service. A lightly stained wood paneling formed its walls, floor, and roof. The boiler at the rear of the carriage warmed the compartment, but at the expense of the coal smoke that clouded the air.

Effie shifted to relieve her sore hips. Her eyes narrowed. “The Fey Finder General bade me accompany you, Mr. Alpin, and not so I would stand and do nothing.” She tried to keep the bite from her tongue. Of Fey Finders, Alpin was a journeyman and not a zealot. At least there was that. He sought not to be bothered rather than possessing the fiery hatred common to his profession.

She pressed her palms into the cushion on either side of her, to steady herself. It still marveled her she could sit so close to a Sniffer, a man the crown tasked with hunting down malevolent fey. Malevolent, as if they knew what the word meant. They hunted all with fey blood, and as a Sithling—one with the ancient blood of the Daoine Sith coursing through her—that included her. But things had changed after Caldwell House, and she had a need to trust where once she dared not. The fierce battle there had forced the lords of the empire to open their eyes. They could not rest on centuries of intolerance any longer. They had to welcome the fey into society’s ranks and accept a permanent treaty. They had witnessed the fate awaiting them if they did not.

Effie’s heart warmed. If the lords of the empire could learn to trust, so could she, and perhaps the Scottish fey would live freely for the first time in millennia.

Alpin’s jaw worked. He’d likely never had someone with paps stand up to him. Most Scots of either gender avoided Sniffers as if they carried the plague. “Look here, Miss Effie,” he snapped. “I’ll not have it. You may dine with the likes of lords, but you’re not in some grand procession here. I know the hearts of these gentle folk better than you ever will, and I will not banter with the mind of a devious hag.”

“When you see one, I’m sure,” said Effie, not knowing whether the man had meant her or the poor Spae Wife they’d come to question.

Author Interview Coming Darkness

How long have you been writing?

I wrote poems on and off since college, but it wasn’t until about 10 or 12 years ago that I started writing stories.

What is your favorite genre to write?

Urban Fantasy/Fantasy. I like writing about the fantastic. I like not having to be constrained by anything other than my imagination.

Which genre have you never tried before, but would you like to try out?

Maybe Romance? Just to prove that I could do it!

Please tell us about your book.

Kai is thrown off balance when Lucifer disappears, and his life begins to spiral out of control. In the past, he never cared that he was looked down upon and called Lucifer’s pet. But with Lucifer absent, he’s left to navigate a world that doesn’t respect him. Since the only true currency is respect, he must gain it the only way his enemies will understand, through blood.

Archangel Lucifer has lived in a pleasant bubble of spoiled excess with his vampire lover, Kai, for centuries. When the other Archangels come to him with a problem — Heaven is gone and their Father is missing — he refuses to get involved because not only is it not his problem, but it’s probably some elaborate ruse they’ve cooked up to lure him back into the fold. When he’s personally attacked, he finds that he’s wrong on both counts. There are other powerful gods at work, gods who believe the current creation is flawed and must be destroyed.

Which character was your favorite, and why? Which character was your least favorite, and why?

I love writing Lucifer. I love exploring his character. I love finding three dimensions and creating a character out of a cultural figure that is entirely one-dimensional. I love Kai and exploring the nuances in his character. I don’t have least favorite characters. I even love my villains! I have characters that are more challenging to write, and I think they stretch me as an author, but none are my “least favorite”. I can find something to love about each and every one.

What was the hardest part about writing your book?

I started out with three characters: Kai, Lucifer and Roberta. The hardest part was finding which story I wanted to tell. I had more than one false start, and took the story in different directions until I solidified the current story line.

What is your writing routine? Are there things you absolutely need to start writing?

My routine is pretty much “butt-in-chair”. There’s nothing more to it than sitting down and writing. I prefer to write in a quiet room, I’ve tried writing to music but it’s distracting. Sometimes I can get away with the TV being on, but the preference is silence.

How long did it take you to write your book from start to finish?

From conception to “The End” about ten years give or take. It wasn’t every day for ten years however. I wrote a bit, put it down for months, wrote some more, put it down etc. Also during much of that time I had no idea where it was going or what the themes were etc. It wasn’t until the last 5 years or so did I get serious.

Can you tell us about your editing process?

I have my character arcs and the overall theme/arc. When I start editing I’m checking to make sure I’ve followed those arcs and solidified the theme. I’m also checking for continuity, making sure the physical characteristics of a character are the same throughout. If I’ve left a species name or a place name TBA, during the editing I make sure to fill that in. At this point I’m also filling out scenes for clarity, looking at sentence structure and word choice, and adding description if necessary. Once that’s done, and I’ve read it a few times looking for errors and checking for cohesion, I send it off to betas to see how the story reads. The next steps depend on their feedback.

Is this book part of a series? If so, how many installments do you have planned?

Yes. Right now I’m looking at three books for the foundation story and then stories within the universe.

Do you have any advice for aspiring authors?

In no particular order: believe in your story; write what you love; read what you love; educate yourself in the art of storytelling; learn about the pros and cons of indie vs traditional publishing and do what’s best for you.

Why should everyone read your book?

In general, Coming Darkness is a grand story with no easy resolutions, which I think makes it an intriguing read. It’s a story about free will and what that means. How life is a series of choices, some big some small, and how the characters are defined by those choices. I believe people will enjoy getting to know characters with more shades of grey than black or white. I think they’ll also enjoy a different Lucifer with different motivations. He was so much fun to write, and writing him that way it gave the story a more sinister villain, which I believe they’ll find interesting as well.

If you could meet three authors, dead or alive, which authors would you choose?

Lee Childs, Stephen King, Neil Gaiman

What inspired you to write your book?

I wanted to tell a different Lucifer story. I didn’t know what until I hit upon the idea that he’d never been to Hell which became the basis for my story and the character.

Are you working on something at the moment? If so, can you tell us more about it?

Yes, the second book in the series tentatively named: Dreaming in Shadow.

  1. There are dark things moving in dreams, no one is safe.
  2. The Rendering is approaching, and Kai doubts he will survive.
  3. Roberta is both more comfortable in her life as a slave but also less stable.
  4. Lucifer chafes against a prophecy that claims he has come to Hell to rule and to lead the charge of demons back to earth.

Coming Darkness

Archangel Lucifer lives a comfortable life of self-imposed exile with his vampire lover, Kai.

Shiloh isn’t adjusting well to her new life in Ironbridge. Life isn’t how she always imagined it would be, and every day is harder than the last. When they find themselves trapped, every second becomes a fight for survival. Can they find a way out before one of them falls to a mad tyrant? Or will their little group be broken up forever?

Sanctuary is the second book in the Titanomachy Series, and it starts off with our protagonist, Shiloh, who has trouble adjusting to her new life in Ironbridge. Shiloh’s past has left her scarred emotionally. The times when she reflects to her early childhood are a bit heartbreaking when you compare them to her current life, and how alone this makes her feel sometimes. She cares deeply for her sister Rilei, and it’s a welcome change to see a sisterly bond represented so predominantly in a book.

The worldbuilding was phenomenal, and I really enjoyed getting to know Shiloh and the other characters. Despite not having read the first book, I didn’t really feel like I was missing out on too much, and I coudl follow the story easily.

An excellent, recommended read for fans of fantasy and steampunk.
