With the chanting voices and shrill noises that only Magdalena could hear, the friends decide there is something sinister living amongst them. Author Bio

Melinda Gail resides in Canton, Georgia with her three daughters, husband of over twenty years, and two adorable fur babies.  Surrounded by the north Georgia mountains, the scenery provides for inspirational settings for her novels. Being raised in the south, she brings a little southern flair and tradition to her characters, all the while remembering the adventurous nature of middle grades to young adult age children. With a passion for the extraordinary and imagination, Melinda hopes you enter a world of fantasy as you see life through the eyes of the characters.

Writing has always been her underlying passion in life. With a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology, and a minor in Sociology, she felt understanding and studying human behavior on the individual and collective level, would apply to anything and everything chosen to do in life. Identified as being a strong writer for her age at the time, she attended a summer literary writer’s camp around age twelve. She flourished and loved every moment of the experience and it has stayed with her throughout adulthood.

The desire to write has always been an integral part of who Melinda is, and about eight months ago she decided it was time. Having always been an avid reader of topics from intense young adult fantasy and thrillers, to light hearted summer romances, she chose juvenile to young adult ages for her book. In middle school summers, she would stay up to the wee hours of the morning reading because she just couldn’t put the book down. This basic idea, not being able to put a book down, is the principal she built on while writing Magdalen Gottschalk: The Crooked Trail. It has moments of ease, moments of intensity, moments of humor, striving to offer some of her own personality in her writings. There is a time for sweetness, a time for seriousness, and always a time for kindness and life lessons. Her style isn’t made up. It is simply who she is, on paper.

Lily Faye-Richardson thought her bad luck was ending when she and her sisters inherited her uncle’s house. Finding a green man chained in the basement changed that. Now she must trust this sexy troll to take her into a magical kingdom and rescue the only family she has.
Theno woke up with missing pieces to his memory but an angel saving him. When her sisters are kidnapped, he is willing to do anything to help her in return. The problem is, if he can’t remember who he is, how can he trust himself not to hurt her?
Together, the two of them will go to the land of Tammara to bring back the other Faye girls. They will have to face an Evil Queen, who wants to find the door and cross over into the human world. There is also the matter of an intense sexual attraction between them and the need for Theno to discover his identity. Does a troll get to have a happy ending?

In Trolling, Lily Faye-Richardson and her sisters inherited her uncle’s house. For Lily, it’s a sign her bad luck is finally turning around… Until she finds a green man chained in the basement of her new home. Turns out he’s a troll named Theno. When Lily’s sisters are kidnapped, he’s willing to risk everything to help her find her sisters back.

Together, Lily and Theno head to the land of Tammara to bring back Lily’s sisters, all the while trying to deny the growing sexual attraction between the two of them…

Lily and Theno were great. They had instant chemistry which only intensified as the story progressed. However, what I enjoyed even more than the romantic interaction, was the world-building. You don’t often see trolls in fantasy literature (people tend to think of trolls as ugly) so that was an original twist. I also enjoyed getting to know the land of Tammara and its inhabitants. The story is creative and imaginative.

Lily was my favorite character. She was willing to do anything to save her sisters, and I really admired that.

I would recommend this book to all fantasy of romance and fantasy fiction.

Book Review: The Laird of Duncairn by Craig Comer

Title: The Laird of Duncairn
Author: Craig Comer
Genre: Gaslamp Fantasy
Age Group: Adult
Rating: 4,5 stars
Purchase: Amazon
Review copy provided by Enchanted Book Promotions in exchange for an honest review.

The year is 1882 Scotland, and the auld alliance betwixt king and fey has long been forgotten. Men of science, backed by barons of industry, push the boundaries of technology. When Sir Walter Conrad discovers a new energy source, one that could topple nations and revolutionize society, the race to dominate its ownership begins. But the excavation and use of this energy source will have dire consequences for both humans and fey. For an ancient enemy stirs, awakened by Sir Walter’s discovery.

Outcast half-fey Effie of Glen Coe is the Empire’s only hope at averting the oncoming disaster. Effie finds herself embroiled in the conflict, investigating the eldritch evil spreading throughout the Highlands. As she struggles against the greed of mighty lords and to escape the clutches of the queen’s minions, her comfortable world is shattered. Racing to thwart the growing menace, she realizes the only thing that can save them all is a truce no one wants.

In The Laird of Duncairn, the reader is transported to the setting of Scotland in 1882. The alliance between the humans and the fey has long been forgotten, and scientistis are pushing the boundaries of technology. Sir Walter Conrad discovers  a new energy source that could revolutionize society… But excavating this source will have dire consequences, for both humans and fey, as an ancient enemy stirs, awakened by what Sir Walter discovered.

Effie, an outcast half-fey, is the Empire’s only hope. But the enemy isn’t the only thing she has to fight if she wants herself and the rest of the world, to survive.

I really enjoyed this book. It’s unique. The setting is historical, but it’s also an alternate world, where we have both humans and fey. Despite that, it reads a lot like an epic fantasy novel, but with some steampunk elements added in that I really enjoy. I also liked the explenation of the fey lore, and how it was all tied up with the steampunk side of the story and fantasy side.

The writing was excellent, and the details the author added in didn’t just make the time period, but the whole world come to life.

Effie is an amazing character. I loved following her journey and seeing her change and grow. The book also has a lot of side characters which is pretty common for fantasy books, but here they all had distinct personalities, and I liked that. They didn’t feel like cardboard figures, but felt like actual people with feelings and emotions.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys fantasy novel, especially if you like reading about the fey and fey lore.

Book Review: Drakon Book 2: Uncarved by C.A. Caskabel

Title: Uncarved (Drakon Book 2)
Author: C.A. Caskabel
Genre: Fantasy
Rating: 4 stars
Purchase: Amazon
Review copy provided by Enchanted Book Promotions in exchange for an honest review.

“How do the Uncarved die? They bleed to death. Always.” Fourteen-winter-old Da-Ren joins the Uncarved, the chosen few destined to lead the Tribe. More than forty children train and compete for the next five springs; only one will become Khun and fulfill the Tribe’s destiny.  Da-Ren’s ambition and strength will keep him alive but can he overcome his most powerful and cunning adversary, the one favored by witches and men? The Goddess and the Ouna-Mas will try to nest in his heart, but is he prepared for the one woman he is brought up to hate? As war and hunger strangle the Tribe, the stakes of love, duty, and betrayal are higher than ever. A young man’s first kill. A young man’s first kiss. A coming-of-age tale with non-stop action.

Drakon Book 2: Uncarved is the second book in the Drakon series. I previously reviewed the first book in the series, and really enjoyed it, so I was eager to get started on the second book. In fact, I was a bit bummed I had to put it on the back burner for a few days because I had to finish some other books first.

Anyway, back to the story. Da-Ren is back in this second installment. After having survived The Sieve, he now joins the Uncarved, the chosen few destined to lead their tribe. With forty children training and competing for the next five years, only one of them will end up becoming Khun (which actually reminded me a lot of the Khan, like The Great Khan from the Mongolian Empire). Now he’s older and wiser, he begins to feel uncertain about some particularities about his tribe and the things he’s always believed in. As he starts to doubt things he’s never doubted before, and begins to question what he’s always considered the truth, he learns a lot more about himself and his tribe than he thought possible.

The book is brutal at times, but then again, so is war and so is the society Da-Ren is growing up in. Politics are just as important as strengths and intelligence. The writing is just as fast-paced as in book one, and combined with the expanding world-building (we learn more about Da-Ren’s world and culture than in book one) and Da-Ren evolving and gorwing as a character, Uncarved makes for an intriguing sequel.

I really enjoyed this book, and finished it in one sitting. Of course, now I can’t wait to find out what happens next. If you enjoy fantasy, I would definitely recommend giving this series a try.

Book Review and Giveaway Dreamwalkers

Title: Dreamwalkers
Author: Tiaan Lubbe
Genre: YA Fantasy / Adventure
Age Group: Young Adult
Rating: 4 stars
Purchase: Amazon
Review copy provided by Enchanted Book Promotions in exchange for an honest review.

“You walk the bridges between two worlds, between reality and dreams, Ciso.”

“You are a Dreamwalker”

Narciso di Angelo, a sixteen-year-old boy, living on the streets of Rome thinks he is the only one that can walk in other’s dreams.

He’s not.

When a mysterious and dark woman makes her appearance in one of his dreamwalks, he is rescued from her clutches by Project Somnus, a secret underground United Nations organisation, that recruits and trains children with his gifts, using them to fight against and prevent worldwide terrorist threats.

Here Narciso learns more of his abilities and where they come from as well as what it means to be part of a family and a home.

But, as the threat of the mysterious woman and the terrorist organisation Tantibus increases, he also learns what it is like to lose this.

“In dreams we live. In reality we dream.”

Narciso di Angelo is a sixteen-year-old boy living on the streets of Rome, and he thinks he’s the only one who can walk in another person’s dreams. He’s not. A dark, mysterious woman appears during one of his dreamwalks, and he’s narrowly rescued from her clutches by Project Somnus, a secret underground UN organisation recruiting and training children with his gifts.

He learns more about his ability and the meaning of home and family while training with Project Somnus, but a dark threat remains and he risks losing it all.

Dreamwalkers reads like X-Men meets Heroes, and it’s set in Rome and Italy, which I really liked considering it’s one of my favorite countries. I also enjoyed the plot, some of the plot twists I didn’t see coming at all. The writing is excellent and flows fluently, which is great for a YA book. From the moment you start reading, you’re right in the middle of the action, right alongside the characters.

I also liked the characters, in particular Narciso. He grows and changes a lot throughout the book, becoming more confident in his abilities and who he truly is; I found I like him better with each passing chapter.

This is a great read for young adults who enjoy fantasy books about people with special powers. The dreamwalking ability is unique and I enjoyed exploring Narciso’s special ability. Recommended to fans of YA fantasy.
