Feeble Connections is a prequel of sorts, to the Love Connection series. I hadn’t read this series yet but the first book has me intrigued, so I might pick it up when I have some spare time. From Goodreads, it looks like there are already two books out in that series, so I have some catching up to do.

Anyway, Feeble Connections is the story of Brandon, a charming Casanova; Jennifer, a beautiful young woman desperate to find true love; and Linden. Jennifer and Brandon meet in college and they connect as friends. While they’re both in love with each other, neither of them dares say it out loud and then, before Brandon can truly understand the depths of his own feelings, Jennifer is swept away by Linden. While very different from Brandon, Linden nevertheless manages to steal Jennifer’s heart.

This is a story of friendship, love, heartbreak, of connections forged and destroyed, of romance. I preferred Brandon over Linden, I thought Linden was actually quite selfish and that he chose his own interests over Jennifer’s way too often. I was rooting for Brandon all the way.

An intriguing NA romance suitable for audiences 18+.

Book Review: Black Dawn by Mallory McCartney

Title: Black Dawn
Genre: YA/NA Fantasy

Age Group: New Adult

The end of an Empire, the rise of a Queen

Emory Fae enjoys leading a quiet, normal life. That is until two mysterious, and handsome soldiers show up at her apartment, and the life she knew is instantly whisked away. Memphis Carter and Brokk Foster come from the magical and war ridden world of Kiero, and upon Emory’s arrival she will discover she is the long-lost heir to the Royal Line and is thrown into the Black Dawn Rebellion with a dynamic role to ignite the rebels and reclaim her throne.

With both men being darkly woven in her past Emory uncovers hidden secrets, a power held long dormant, and will soon realize there are worse things than supernatural humans, love, loss, betrayal, and a Mad King.

Some things are better left in the shadows

With the characters being older than in regular YA books, I would classify Black Dawn more as a new adult read – although it’s a clean read, so young adults can enjoy it too. New adults might find it easier to connect to the main characters, though.

Anyway, Black Dawn is the start of a brand new series, and it’s a promising start at that. Emory Fae leads a quiet, normal life – until two mysterious, handsome soldiers show up at her apartment. Memphis Carter and Brokk Foster come from a different world, the war ridden world of Kiero. Emory is the long lost heir of the royal line of Kiero, and is thus thrown right in the middle of the conflict, as soon as she arrives there, and urged to reclaim her throne.

The story is told in different perspectives, which could be a struggle, but it’s not the case here. If anything, it adds more to the story to be able to see it from differnet perspectives. The characters are three-dimensional, well-developed, and they act realistically, in particular Emory. I also liked Memphis. He had a complex, mysterious personality and it wasn’t always easy to figure out why he did what he did, which made him intriguing.

The pacing is fast, and there’s never quite time to catch a breath, which is pretty much how the whole experience must feel like for Emory, so to have the reader experience something similar works rather well.

The world building was pretty solid, the writing was fluent, and overall, I really enjoyed this book. I would recommend it to all fans of fantasy novels, and look forward to reading the second book in this series.

Book Review: Someone to Stay by B.M. Sandy

Title: Someone To Stay
Author: B.M. Sandy
Genre: New Adult Romance
Age Group: New Adult
Rating: 4 stars
Purchase: Amazon
Review copy provided by Enchanted Book Promotions in exchange for an honest review.

Life is short – this Cassie Mills knows. In the wake of a devastating loss, she has reshaped her life, carving out a limited place for herself with her grief-narrowed perception of the world. But when Jake Mason, an elusive yet famous British actor, comes to her small Pennsylvania town with an entire movie crew to film for two months, she is asked to cater to him and his colleagues in the hotel restaurant where she works. After a strange, but memorable meeting, she tells herself she’ll never see the kind and handsome man up close again. The very next night, though, he shows up again for dinner, and the spotlight is on Cassie again.

Jake Mason’s career is flooded with endless Do Not Disturb signs. He’s notorious for hiding during shoots; nobody seems to really know him. He’s worked hard for his career, and he accepted a long time ago that privacy was a valuable commodity that he should never relinquish. Accepting a leading role in a film that places him in a small town in Pennsylvania, he is forced his first night there to attend a private dinner with nineteen of his fellow cast and crew – definitely outside of his comfort zone. But after losing his phone, he finds himself intrigued by the waitress who helps him, and begins to wonder if some sacrifices might be worth making after all.

In Someone to Stay, Cassie Mills’ life was turned upside down because of a terrible loss, and she’s struggling to reshape her life. Jake Manson, an elusive yet famous British actor, come to her town with his movie crew to film for two months, and Cassie is asked to cater to Jake and his colleagues in the hotel restaurant where she works. She has a strange but memorable meeting with Jake Mason, the actor who is otherwise best known for keeping to his privacy. Cassie fears she may never see him up close again… But then she does, and the two of them connect in ways she never thought possible.

Cassie and Jake are amazing characters. The author did a phenomenal job crafting them as believable and realistic. The story may not be the most original (superstar falls ofr small town girl) but Cassie and Jake’s personalities make it really worth your time. The story is sweet and swoonworthy, and the writing is excellent.

Recommended to anyone who enjoys sweet NA romance novels.

About the Book

TakeAChance

A single moment can change everything.

A university student preparing to confront the adolescent crush who betrayed him. A demon embroiled in a battle against his very nature. A soldier, mentally scarred after fighting in The Great War, torn between propriety and his heart. Though separated by time and distance, culture and reality, these young men all have one thing in common: they each stand at a crossroads in their life and face a choice that will alter the course of their future.

The twelve tales in this collection of gay romantic fiction range from sweet to erotic, contemporary to historical, paranormal to grittily realistic. Whether centred around the fear associated with coming out, the thorny issue of trust, or the struggle for survival, each story explores in its own way the courage needed to overcome personal obstacles and take a chance on love.

Excerpt

Just as I sat, Mr. Keno hit the lights. Everything went black. It hadn’t been so dark in my old school. The blinds over the windows must be heavy enough to be bombproof. Comforting thought. Nobody believed the worn-out phrase “it can’t happen here.” We all knew it could.

“Keep your phones put away,” Mr. Keno said. “It’s going to be OK.” Those would be the last words we’d hear until it was over.

An instant later, someone pushed in next to me, between me and the file cabinet. Just my luck. I squished over against the wall as tightly as I could. Even so, our hips touched. It was so dark I couldn’t tell anything about the person, except that he or she smelled pleasantly of some herbal shampoo. Since I’d only been in the classroom a few minutes before the lockdown started, I hadn’t gotten a chance to really look at my new classmates.

I pressed against the wall as if I might become one with it. What I really wanted to do was curl into a ball. I settled for bending low over my legs, crossed at the ankles. I had too much imagination. It did crazy things when I was afraid. I closed my eyes in the darkness and willed myself to be calm, but every nerve was so keyed up that my pounding heart refused to slow down.

First thing in the morning was the perfect time for a gunman to attack. Kids would be in their classrooms for attendance, so he could move freely in the halls without people hanging around to either jump him or run. Since the classrooms would be full, the gunman could find victims behind every door.

I focused on what I could hear. The fan in the ceiling that I hadn’t noticed before became an insistent whir, so loud I couldn’t believe I hadn’t been aware of it the moment I’d walked into the room. It covered the sounds the kids on the other side of the filing cabinet had to be making—little sounds people couldn’t help but make, like scraping a shoe across the floor when they shifted position, or a stifled cough. I listened so hard it hurt. Only the fan. Nothing in the hallway.

Surely, if this were a real situation, there would be turmoil somewhere in the building. Unless the administrators were expecting something to happen that hadn’t happened yet. I imagined a man prowling the corridors, intent on his destination. Or perhaps he hadn’t chosen his victims yet. He might be waiting for something to speak to him, like the tone of a cell phone from behind a door, or the thump of a backpack falling off a chair. It might only take some little thing like that for him to burst in here and…
