Author Interview

  • Can you tell us a little about Touched by the Wolf?

Touched by the Wolf is the first book in the Dark Blood trilogy, it sets up the story and introduces us to the characters that will be playing a huge part in the bigger picture. I don’t want to say too much about it because I always give things away. But there is a huge unique twist in the story and a good few show downs between vampires and werewolves. Oh, and some good old fashioned romance.

  • Where did the inspiration for this story come from?

The inspiration for Touched by the Wolf actually came from a character I use to write on Twitter when I was part of a role play group. Emilie is the main female in the book, and I have had her in my head for about four years now. I originally started writing an historical fiction, but after struggling with it I took Emilie and her sister Melaina and placed them in the paranormal world of witches, vampires and werewolves and never looked back. I admit I did not really have a solid idea where I was going with the story to start with until about three chapters in and it just clicked. The rest is history, as they say.

  • How long have you been writing?

I have been writing most of my life. As a kid I use to write fanfictions and even posted a few on a site. I then joined a role play group on twitter that I was part of for two years and wrote many different characters. I have also dabbled in poetry, though that has taken a back seat lately. I do hope to return to it one day.

  • What do you love most about writing paranormal romance?

The fact that there are no rules. The world that you can create can be whatever you want it to be, and the characters can be whatever you want them to be. I just love the escape from reality you can find when reading and writing paranormal romance.

  • What was the hardest part about writing this book?

I wanted my characters to be unique and their names unique. All of the wolves and vampires I actually spent a lot of time looking up old Latin names, and finding out their meanings. I think in the next book I will go through each name and write their meanings for the readers.

  • How long did it take to write the book from start to finish?

From start to finish, once I had settled on paranormal, it took me about two months to get it to now.

  • What is your writing routine? Are there things you absolutely have to do before you sit down and write?

Not really. I don’t really have a routine. I need to make sure I have a cup of tea and lots of treats but apart from that I don’t do much else. I work full time in the week and it is shift work, so I write as and when I can, mainly at the weekend.

  • Can you tell us about your editing process?

I have an incredible editor who is also a very good friend. She edits and proof reads for me then sends it back and I go through it all, adding a few bits here and there, taking some things out. Though once she was done with it there was not much to change. I am lucky she gets me and made it very easy to change.

  • If you could meet three authors, dead or alive, who would they be?

Wow what a tough question.  I think they would have to be:

J.K Rowling because I am such a Harry potter geek.

Stephen King just because his writing is so in depth and so amazingly vivid I would want to learn so much from him.

Robert Louis Stevenson because Treasure Island is my favourite childhood book. I love pirates and I do plan to write a pirate/paranormal series soon.

  • What’re you working on at the moment? Any new novels in the pipeline?

I am just about to start writing book two of the Dark Blood trilogy. I can’t wait to get back to these characters. Maccon the Black Wolf especially has been very vocal of late, he has a lot to say.

About the Book

How far would you go for immortality?

It has been a century since the wolves of the Silent Walkers waged war against the vampires of the Lamia for the Dark Blood of Immortality they possess.

As the battle lines are drawn once again, it will be up to the White Witch Emilie to use all in her power to bewitch the youngest of the wolves, Maccon.

To gain his trust.

To seduce him.

To bend him to her will.

To stop the impending war.

Touched by the Wolf is the debut novel from R. Murray and the first in the Dark Blood series.

Welcome to Pathoca, a land whose gods and magic rule over the realm of emotions and thought. But don’t be fooled, the mortals are not the only ones susceptible to their pathos.

After a brutal war destroyed everything he held dear, the god of fear has disappeared into hiding. But the persistence of one mortal may be the key to bringing him back to power. Are they both willing to make the sacrifices it will take?

In Pathoca, gods and magic rule of the realm of emotions and thoughts, but they’re not immune to either of those. The god of fear has gone into hiding after a brutal war destroyed everything he’s once loved. But one mortal’s persistence may be the key to bringing him back in power, if they’re both willing to sacrifice everything.

The god of fear, Frykstra, never expected anyone would be willing to serve him again. But one faithful night, he meets Bakrin, and she’s willing to become his worshiper. In fact, she insists on it. The two of them form an unlikely match, but it’s intriguing to see the relationship between them develop. Frykstra is cold and detached at first, but he gradually warms up to her.

The writing was solid, and the pacing very fast. The book was just slightly over 100 pages but a fast read I could easily finish in one sitting. The world-building was interesting, with the gods and myths, and the characterization worked well too. Recommended to fans of paranormal romance.

Book Review: No Rest for the Wicked by Krystal Jane Ruin

Title: No Rest for the Wicked
Author: Krystal Jane Ruin
Genre: Paranormal Romance, Fantasy
Rating: 3,5 stars

Review copy provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.

Since her release from the psychiatric facility and into the smothering guardianship of her aunt, twenty-one-year-old psychic Tatum Torabi has been sneaking away to sell curses and plagues in the underground, a black market known for illegal and supernatural wares.

Tatum’s unique abilities catch the attention of a hella-creepy trash peddler who offers her a job tracking down people who owe his boss “a favor.” She couldn’t be less interested, but when she refuses, the company forces her compliance by threatening the lives of the only family she has left.

Because tracking barely scratches the surface of what they really want from her. There’s a reason Tatum is so good at making curses, and they want her to use those skills for a much darker purpose.

No Rest for the Wicked has the kind of book blurb I can’t resist. Psychics selling curses in underground black markets, dark pasts, tough choices, just reading the blurb I wanted to read the book. I did enjoy the story, but I didn’t fall in love with it. I wasn’t always too fond of the writing nor the characters.

I did like Tatum, though. She suffered through a horrible past, but she didn’t let it stop her. She was strong, fierce, and while not fond of her abilities at the start, she confronted her demons and learned to embrace her powers. I also liked the mysteries surrounding the past, and was eager to figure out what happened. My favorite parts were the parts set in the underground market, where Tatum sells curses. I thought that was an original and clever thought, and I wouldn’t have minded to spend some more time down there, exploring the different booths and who had what to sell.

But what troubled me a little was how many characters there were. Everything seemed to be going on all at once, and all the characters seemed busy doing so many things, it was difficult to keep track of who was doing what and what everyone was up to. The storyline also had a lot of coincidences – a few I can take, but this was just a little too coincidental for my liking.

I also didn’t like Emmerick. I felt the relationship between himand Tatum was forced, and he was just too perfect. He didn’t have any flaws, or very little flaws, and I couldn’t relate to him.

The writing was pretty engaging overall, but felt a little sloppy at parts. Overall, it’s an enjoyable, entertaining book fans of paranormal fantasy with a hint of romance will enjoy. It’s also the author’s debut book, and it’s a pretty solid debut. I look forward to what the author has in store next.

Book Review: Lalin Bonheur by Margaret O. Howard

Title: Lalin Bonheur
Author: Margaret O. Howard
Genre: Paranormal Mystery / Romance
Rating: 4 stars
Purchase: Amazon
Review copy provided by Enchanted Book Promotions in exchange

When Lalin Bonheur shape shifts, she roams the Vieux Carre as a sleek tuxedo cat to learn the secrets of her city.

But on her debut at a Quadroon Ball in 1830 this octoroon beauty meets and falls in love with French aristocrat, Etienne Legendre. Etienne becomes her protector and he soon learns that his mistress leads a second life as a healer and voudou priestess.

Their story takes a bizarre turn after Lalin’s protector marries. His wife, Minette, dies mysteriously and he is charged with murder. Lalin concocts a zombie potion to assist him in his escape from jail.

The couple sail upriver to hide until they can prove his innocence. But their struggles only become more challenging, when they face the fearsome loup-garou (wolf men of Louisiana) and then a giant bird. Lalin must use her magic to battle these monsters. But it’s what she learns about the vicious feathered creature that brings the story to its climax.

Lalin Bonheur is an extraordinary book. Set in New Orlean in the 1800s, it’s the story of Lalin, an extraordinary woman in an extraordinary era. Lalin is a healer, a voodoo priestess, a girl who can shapeshift and who knows things she shouldn’t know. Lalin meets Etienne Legendre, a French aristocraft who becomes her protector.

When Etienne’s wife dies under mysterious circumstances and he’s charged with murder, Lalin helps him scape from jail. Unfortunately they run from one danger into the next, and Lalin needs to use all the magic she knows to protect them both.

This was an intriguing book, not just because it focuses on a mixed-race relationship, but also because of its focus on voodoo and magic. I’ve always been intrigued by voodoo, and I enjoyed this opportunity to learn more about it.

The writing and storytelling was excellent, and the author managed to describe the historical period well, making me feel as if I’d actually transported back in time to New Orleans in 1830. Fans of magical realism and paranormal mysteries will enjoy this book.

Author: Katherine McIntyre

Genre: Paranormal Romance

Crisis and danger have become second nature for Alanna Carrington—after all, as the boss of the Philadelphia Coven, she’s responsible for upholding the laws amongst the supernatural. Which means when the Order of the Serpent rears its ugly head, this time with the most powerful necromancer this city’s ever seen, she’s the one person who can keep Philly safe. Ex-Order djinn and now ally, Samuel Karim happens to be the best suited guy to help. Except he’s also the first man who’s stoked her interest in far too long, and ever since she commandeered the lamp he’s tethered to for safekeeping, he also hates her guts.

As the Order gathers the necromancers of her city and sparks a dangerous alliance, she finds herself working with Samuel Karim more and more. Hatred burns to passion, and when he exhibits a strength and compassion that breaks through her ironclad defenses, she finds herself falling deeper despite the complications between them. Yet with her city under siege and their lives on the line, the sharp desire between them erupts into the temptation to break their own rules, before the Order of the Serpent robs them of the chance permanently.

A modern day Renaissance-woman, Katherine McIntyre has learned soapmaking, beer brewing, tea blending, and most recently roasting coffee. Most of which make sure she’s hydrated and bathed while she spends the rest of her time writing. With a desire to travel and more imagination than she knows what to do with, all the stories jumping around in her head led to the logical route of jotting them down on paper. She writes novels with snarky women, ragtag crews, and guys with bad attitudes. High chances for a passionate speech thrown into the mix.
