Bobby has high hopes for his new life in Detroit, and he will not, under any circumstances, blow his chances by messing up a prime job opportunity at his uncle’s construction company. But his first meeting with his mentor, African American foreman Jimbo, turns out even worse than expected when it becomes apparent that Bobby is learning the ropes to become Jimbo’s boss.

As Bobby tries to navigate Jimbo’s understandable resentment, he must also wrestle with the misperceptions of Black culture that his Caucasian family has passed on to him. Eventually, the two men become friends as Jimbo recognizes that Bobby doesn’t hold the prejudices of his uncle.

But just as things start to smooth out, Jimbo introduces Bobby to the kind, clever, and stunning Karen—Jimbo’s favorite woman to string along. Confused by his strong feelings for this intriguing woman and frustrated with Jimbo’s flippant treatment of her, Bobby struggles with whether to pursue Karen…at the cost of ending his newfound friendship with Jimbo and sabotaging his future.

Taking a candid look at interracial romance and the human experience, …But My Soul is Black reveals the cultural misperceptions that harm us—and the love that heals us.

Author Interview

1) The main characters in the book are Karen, Bobby, Jimbo and Uncle Fred.
+Bobby is the young man of Anglo decent who hopes to use his family status as nephew of Uncle Fred Selinski, to get a prominent position in his uncle’s company.
+Jimbo is the stalwart, strong, handsome and demanding foreman of Uncle Fred’s construction company and the long time dating friend of Karen.
+Karen is the beautiful, vivacious, loving career lady who originally had the heart and full attention from Jimbo, but who later became the primary object of attention of both Jimbo and Bobby.
+Uncle Fred is the owner of the construction company that both Jimbo and Bobby work for, and who tries to exert significant influence on his nephew, Bobby.

2) What is the conflict in the story?
*Through many situations and unthinkable twists of fate, Jimbo and Bobby become best friends only later due to unplanned betrayal become the worst of enemies.

*How can you allow yourself to experience forbidden love, understanding the price you may have to pay, that will change your life forever and turn friends into enemies and
fill your life with turmoil?

3) What character am I most like?
*I think I would identify to a great extent with the decision making ability of Bobby. I believe I would pursue the love of my life, regardless of the consequence to me and
unfortunately, even if it cost me the friendship of someone that was very important to me.

4) Bobby has an opportunity when he was hired by his Uncle Fred, to use this as leverage to use what could be called “privilege” to move up in the company. He chose to go the hard way, learn each job from the ground up, and attempt to gain the respect from those who would eventually work for him. Nobody likes him. Should he abandon this strategy since? people don’t seem to be “thankful” that he is not using his advantage?

Karen has loved Jimbo forever, though Jimbo has taken her love for granted. Someone who does not look like her, who was the best friend of Jimbo, asks for her love. This guy asks her, “Please don’t look at me as a white boy. I just ask that you give me the same opportunity, you would give a black guy who would fall in love with you”. Should she or shouldn’t she? Her inner self is agonizing. What will be her decision?

5) These characters are not from the portrayal of real people, but some of the situations I have witnessed.

6) Each character in 3 words
Uncle Fred – Boss, dominant, rich
Jimbo – strong, handsome, vain
Karen – beautiful, thoughtful, competent
Bobby – Determined, perceptive, caring

7) If your book was made into a movie, who would play your main characters?
Bobby – Matthew McConaughey
Jimbo – Denzel Washington
Karen – Halle Berry
Uncle Fred – Williams Shatner

8) My lead characters have “baggage” that keeps them from wanting to pursue a new relationship. Do you think that sometimes we let our past get in the way of what God has planned for us.

Our past opinions and preferences many times dictate the decisions we make. Being challenged to go against traditional beliefs is unchartered territory for many of us, it is
uncomfortable and for many of us, terrifying. We must summon deep seated courage to allow us to make uncomfortable and non-traditional choices. However, in so doing, we gain the strength of purpose in our lives.

LoveBites

From international best-selling author, Jeanne Bannon, comes the story of Jack O’Hurley, a man who’s protected his broken heart by running away and refusing to open himself to love. After years of hiding behind any excuse not to let his walls down, he can’t help but be intrigued when he meets the most unusual woman he’s ever set eyes on. Star is certainly not what he’s been looking for but she just might be what he needs.

As Jack begins to fall in love with the eccentric Star, another woman vies for his attention. Torn between the two very different but equalling alluring ladies, he puts into play his tried and true system for determining whether he will continue to date a woman — introducing each to his dog, Phil.

Crazy as it may seem, Jack trusts Phil’s instincts more than he does his own. The only problem is that none have yet to pass the Phil Test.

Excerpt

Jack noticed the fur on Phil’s back stand on end and then it came, the low growl and bared teeth he’d expected. Though Phil would never bite, those who didn’t know her were sure to be petrified by this display.

Denise was no exception. She backed up, plastering herself against the now closed front door. “Is he going to attack me?”

Jack stood between Phil and his date and tried not to smile. “She. Phil’s female.”

Denise just failed what Jack liked to call “The Phil Test” as so many other women had before her.

“She won’t bite. She just doesn’t like you,” Jack said, then turned to Phil, pulling her by the collar a few feet down the entranceway hall. “Go on now. Go to bed, Phil.” He pointed the way, but the dog didn’t move. Her eyes were trained on Denise. She lifted her head and smelled the air, her fur still at attention. Then the dog sneezed and shook her head.

“I don’t think she likes your perfume,” Jack said. “Think we’d better call it a night. This isn’t going to work out.” He opened the door and without a word, Denise fled, fishing her car keys out of her purse as she made her way down his walkway.

Denise was the sixth woman this month alone Phil had sent packing. Jack flipped on the outside light and watched as she got in her car and hoped she wouldn’t drive too fast and end up nose first in one of the dips along the laneway. Once she was out of sight, he locked the door, made his way to the living room, and plopped into his easy chair beside Phil’s bed. Phil turned in a circle and plopped into her own spot, nudging the duvet until it covered her.

 “Your nose is bleeding.”

I brought my hand to my nose and nodded.

Ugh. I snorted coke last night.

My whole body contorted and I ran to Derek’s bathroom as quickly as I could. I made it just in time. Blood and acid trickled from my nostrils, vomit spewed violently from my mouth, and tears poured from my ducts.

Eli caught up with me, closed the door, and pulled my hair back into a neat bun. His soft hands rubbed my back gently until finally, after what seemed like years, my body stopped betraying me and calmed. The stress Eli felt was written all over his face; he couldn’t imagine the idea of me being hurt, sick, under his watch. He handed me some tissues for my nose and held me to his chest on the tile floor. He didn’t say a word but I knew that he was worried; he felt betrayed by my choices. I hated that I had let him down again. I cried so hard I threw up again.

Book Excerpt

Liam surveyed the damaged wall and the splintered glass and wood. I couldn’t tell him what happened. Aric and my sisters would be hurt—or worse. But I couldn’t lie to Liam. Like most preternaturals, he could smell a lie. So I worked to calm my racing heart and tried to gather my words carefully.

He helped me to stand once he failed to sense any immediate danger. His eyes widened as he took in my state. “Good Lord, Celia. What happened?”

“I was attacked,” I gasped, still unable to speak clearly.

Liam swept me into his arms, moving me away from the shards of glass. “Tell me who did this to you!”

“Our . . . enemy.”

Liam sniffed the air. I panicked, thinking he’d detect Anara’s scent. “Wolves. Wolves have been here,” he said.

Wolves?“I don’t recognize their scent.” Liam threw a blanket on the couch and gently lay me over it. “Hang on, Celia. I’ll call Aric—”

“No! Liam, you can’t call Aric.”

“Celia, I have to, you’re hurt.”

My throat ached and it burned to talk. “I don’t want him to see me like this. He’s already dealing with a lot. Please, Liam, just get me to Misha’s house. Emme can heal me there.”

Liam’s face split with guilt and uncertainty. As one of Aric’s Warriors, he was blood-bound to protect me as Aric’s mate, but he was also obliged to obey him. “Celia, I know he’s in his own personal hell, but you’re his priority. He’ll want to be here.”

Emme is who I need right now. There’s still blood running down my back.”

In an instant, Liam was behind me, examining my wounds. I wasn’t a were. I couldn’t heal. “Oh, shit. I’ll get you to Emme right away.”

Liam lifted me and raced toward the door, kicking the empty boxes he’d dropped on the porch out of his way. He must have arrived to remove his belongings from the bedroom he and Emme had shared.

The bright sunlight burned my eyes. I shut them tight until we reached Liam’s SUV. The moment he strapped me in, he stomped on the accelerator and roared out of our cul-de-sac. “What exactly happened, Celia? And why did I only smell your blood?”

“I was caught off guard.”

Liam frowned. “What the hell? You’re always on guard.”

“I’ve been distracted because of . . . everything. Look, I can’t keep talking. It hurts too much.” It was true, but mostly I was running out of ways to be creative with my answers.

“Sorry, Celia—I wasn’t thinking. I’m just trying to figure things out. Don’t worry. You’ll be with Emme soon.”

The relief I felt was short-lived. Almost immediately, he called the one person I dreaded most.

Aric’s voice pulsed with strain from the moment he answered. “Liam, I told you now’s not a good time—”

“Celia’s hurt.”

What? Is she all right?”

“She’s not dying.” Liam gave me the once-over. “At least, I don’t think she is. But she’s pretty fucked up. Near as I can figure she was attacked by a bunch of Tribe wolves.”

The Tribe were the evil band of bastards who had awoken the even more evil and bigger bastard demon. In stopping them, we’d decimated their numbers, but they were still out there—thankfully providing the perfect scapegoat.

Aric’s breaths came out fast. “When did this happen?”

Liam sniffed the air around me. “By the way the dry blood on her smells, about an hour ago.”

Aric let out a string of swearwords. “By the way the dry blood smells on her!”

“Well, yeah, she’s still bleeding.”

“How bad is it?”

“Pretty bad, but I think she’ll live.” He shook his head when he took another look at me. “Damn, you should see her. She looks like hell . . .”

I groaned. Way to keep Aric calm, Liam.

CoverThe Weird Girls return in another edge-of-your-seat novel from Cecy Robson! Just when Celia thinks the supernatural world can’t turn deadlier, a new rival emerges, proving just how dangerous a power-hungry were can be.

Since being cursed with unique abilities, Celia Wird and her three sisters have fought the most bloodthirsty preternaturals in the Lake Tahoe region. But Celia’s greatest threat is someone she would have never suspected: Anara, a werewolf Elder who has allowed his hatred for Celia to spiral out of control. In a play for dominance, Anara tortures Celia and gives her an ultimatum: sever her mate bond with pureblood were Aric—or Anara will kill everyone she loves.

From the instant they met, Celia and Aric have shared an attraction that cannot be tamed. So keeping Aric away is impossible, and Aric would sooner die than allow anyone to hurt the woman he loves. Misha, master vampire and Celia’s sworn protector, also finds his way into the chaos, seeking blood from those who have harmed her.

Now Celia and her sisters are caught in the middle of a war driven by lust, fueled by hatred, and destined to end in tragedy. For Anara is a force to be reckoned with, and he will not succumb without robbing Celia of those who hold her heart.
