For A Glimpse Beyond the Terminus marks the second collection of horror, emotion and oddity by author Jordan R. Anderson.
Within these pages, a middle-aged man encounters oddity in a used car purchase, and a pair of detectives investigates the aftermath. A young employee of a tech firm discovers strange abilities in the wake of losing his virginity. After the stillbirth of her child, a woman flees from her pursuant nightmares into the arms of her sole blood relative. A boy’s patience is tested and his faith is challenged as he awaits prophecy under the guidance of his mother’s righteous fervor.
These and other tales lay elbow-to-elbow like corpses in a mass grave, offering unique struggles and differing perspectives on the meaning of life, death and the spaces between.
“Anderson’s writing is his own, but you could make comparisons to H. P. Lovecraft in his love for detail and the slowly mounting terror in his stories. There is also a good deal of science fiction in the mix that might make one think of Ray Bradbury for the humanity and Michael Crichton for the tech end of things.” —Brian J. Lewis, Horror Review

I’m a huge fan of horror stories, so when I saw a request from the author to review this book pop up in my mailbox, I simply couldn’t resist. Not only does it have an awesome, fitting cover, the stories inside are pretty awesome too.

Usually with short story collections, they end up being a bit of mixed bag, with some excellent stories, some mediocre ones and one or two that are not so great. With For A Glimpse Beyond The Terminus, none of the stories really fell into the latter category – some stories were excellent, some were mediocre, but there wasn’t a single one that I didn’t like.

“The Midnight Baby” and “Master” were my two favorite stories in the collection. I also really liked the plot of “The Harem Within” and how it was executed. Perhaps my least favorite was “Under and In and So It All Begins”, but several other reviewers mentioned that as their favortie, which just shows you can’t argue with taste.

Author Jordan R. Anderson has the uncanny ability to sketch his character’s personality in a matter of minutes, like a painter bringing a portrait to life in just a few brushstrokes, and he masterfully creates an eerie, unsettling atmosphere in all of his stories.

I just finished this one, and I’m already looking forward to the next collection!

Book Review: Seven Threads by Jason Atkinson

Title: Seven Threads

Seven Threads is a book of 7 short stories full of twists and turns. A girl on the run, a man accused of murder, a homeless man who finds his way, and much more. While each story is unique, they all offer the same human compassion that is sometimes lacking in today’s world. The reader is sure to find each story a page turner full of emotions, and left wanting more!

Seven Threads by Jason Atkinson is a collection of 7 short stories. The stories are different genres and feature unique, different characters but they all deal with a common topic: human compassion (which may or may not be lacking in the stories). One of the stories is about a man murdering his friend. Another deals with a homeless man trying to find his way. A girl running away on a train. A man saying his goodbyes to a relative.

All the stories are different but they do connect in a way, through the common theme of humanity and compassion. The stories are of decent quality, and although I preferred some over others, there weren’t any that I didn’t like at all; they were all quite enjoyable.

Fans of short stories should give this collection a shot.

Mini-Reviews: Nightmares, Extinction of All Children, America’s Most Haunted Hotels

minireview

Time for some mini-reviews! What are mini-reviews, you ask? As the title suggests, these are short reviews, consisting of one paragraph tops, about a book. It’s a way to catch up on the books I’ve read a while ago, but never got around to reviewing.

Nightmares

Tite: Nightmares

Author: Ellen Datlow (Editor)

Genre: Horror, Short Stories

Rating: 3,5 stars

Purchase: Amazon

Unlucky thieves invade a house where Home Alone seems like a playground romp. An antique bookseller and a mob enforcer join forces to retrieve the Atlas of Hell. Postapocalyptic survivors cannot decide which is worse: demon women haunting the skies or maddened extremists patrolling the earth.

In this chilling twenty-first-century companion to the cult classic Darkness: Two Decades of Modern Horror, Ellen Datlow again proves herself the most masterful editor of the genre. She has mined the breadth and depth of ten years of terror, collecting superlative works of established masters and scene-stealing newcomers alike.

Review: This is a perfect collection for fall / winter, with some stories being creepy, some disgusting, and some bone-chilling! Some of stories were amazing, but some were lacking quality and were a little boring. Overall, not too bad of a collection but I would’ve preferred a better mix of strong and mediocre stories – now most of them seemed mediocre.

Extinction of All Children

Title: Extinction of All Children

Author: L.J. Epps

Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy

Rating: 3,5 stars

Purchase: Amazon

A young adult, fantasy novel about a teenager who is the last eighteen-year-old in her territory. There will never be another child; every baby born after her has been taken away. Everyone wonders why she survived.

Emma Whisperer was born in 2080, in the small futuristic world of Craigluy. President Esther, in charge for the last twenty-two years, has divided their world into three territories, separated by classes—the rich, the working class, and the poor—because she believes the poor should not mingle with the others. And, the poor are no longer allowed to have children, since they do not have the means to take care of them.
Any babies born, accidentally or willfully, are killed. Emma is the last eighteen-year-old in her territory; every baby born after her has died. Somehow, she survived this fate.
During the president’s Monday night speech, she announces a party will be held to honor the last child in the territory, Emma Whisperer. Emma must read a speech, expressing how happy she is to be the last eighteen-year-old.
Emma doesn’t like the rules; she doesn’t believe in them. So, she feels she must rebel against them. Her family doesn’t agree with her rebellion, since they are hiding a big secret. If this secret gets out, it will be disastrous, and deadly, for her family.
During Emma’s journey, she meets—and becomes friends with—Eric. He is one of the guards for the president. She also befriends Samuel, another guard for the president, who is summoned to watch over her. As Emma meets new people, she doesn’t know who she can trust. Yet, she finds herself falling for a guy, something which has never happened before.
After doing what she feels is right, Emma finds herself in imminent danger. In the end, she must make one gut-wrenching decision, a decision that may be disastrous for them all.

Review: An interesting plot, definitely unique, and Emma makes an intriguing protagonist, the kind you can root for. However, sometimes the writing rambled on, and the book suffered from a few info-dumps, and repetitive scenes.

America’s Most Haunted Hotels

Title: America’s Most Haunted Hotels

Author: Jamie Davis Whitmer

Genre: Nonfiction, Paranormal, Ghosts

Rating: 4 stars

Purchase: Amazon

Phantom footsteps pace the stairs at the Myrtles Plantation. A seductive spirit tugs on the sheets at the Copper Queen. Ghost children whisper and giggle at the Kehoe House. Journey into the mysterious world of haunted hotels, where uninvited guests roam the halls, supernatural sounds ring throughout the rooms, and chills run along the spines of those who dare to check in for the night.

Join Jamie Davis Whitmer, author of Haunted Asylums, Prisons, and Sanatoriums, as she explores some of the most haunted hotels across the United States. From the Jerome Grand Hotel in Arizona to the Palmer House in Minnesota, each hotel is discussed in great detail, covering everything from the building’s history and legends to first-hand accounts of spooky sounds and smells, ghost sightings, EVP sessions, and more. You’ll also find photos, travel information, and everything else you need to plan your own visit to these iconic hotels.

Review: In this book, the author and her husband travel from one town to the next, to visit haunted hotels. Readers get the history of each hotel, info about the haunting, and then the author’s evidence (or lack of evidence, if they don’t get any during their investigation) for the haunting. I enjoyed that they included their own experience, and that they did research about the locations. A travelling guide for people who enjoy the paranormal.

Book Review: Of Life, Death, Aliens and Zombies by Dario Cannizzarro

41gutawb6glTitle: Of Life, Death, Aliens and Zombies
Author: Dario Cannizzaro
Genre: Literary Short Story Collection
Age Group: Adult
Rating: 4 stars
Purchase: Amazon
Review copy provided by Enchanted Book Promotions in exchange for an honest review.

Misnomer on purpose, this amazing debut rocks nine short and amusing stories that talk about life, death (as the title suggests), love, loneliness, art, sex, drugs, culture, religion but also – much less than you would expect – aliens, zombies and much more.

Ordinary characters facing extraordinary situations, dry humor, philosophical musing dressed as whimsical, offhand commentary; those are the key elements for this incredible authorial debut.

The collection comprehends three previously published stories (“The Galway Review”, “Two Thousand Words” and “Chantwood Magazine”); five new unpublished pieces; and for the first time in English, the best-selling story “Impurità”, which was Selected Work in iBooks Italy 2012.

As with any short story collection, Of Life, Death, Aliens and Zombies offers a mix of stories, some excellent, others good. There was not a single story that I thought was bad, though, which speaks volumes for the quality of the collection.

The stories are a mix: they’re about life and death, aliens and zombies (as the title suggests) but they also deal with a lot more, like love, religion, loneliness. The themes are varied and differ in every story. At just over a 100 pages, the collection is a fast read that you can finish in little more than an hour’s time.

One of my favorite stories (it’s hard to pick an exact favorite) was Yet Another Zombie Apocalypse. I love zombie stories, but to see one so completely different from just about every other zombie story out there, was amazing. Another one of my favorites was Terrorism Marketing. It was bizarre, ironic, but also rang sort of true of today’s society. I also enjoyed The Best Place to Plan a Mass Shooting.

The writing is very strong, lyrical, and it’s what carries the stories and lifts them from good to great. I look forward to reading more stories by this author in the future, and I’m very impressed with this collection.

His love of the region is evident in his writing as he often incorporates the foothills of the Berkshires and the small towns of the Bay and Nutmeg states into his work.
5 Stars “a relentless, thrilling ride” – Court Street Literary, on Bloody Bloody Apple.
“Howard Odentz takes this mis-mosh of dysfunctional characters and puts together a wonderful story that is equal parts horror and love.” – Scared Stiff Reviews, on Bloody Bloody Apple.

Little Killers A to Z: An Alphabet of Horror is, as the name suggests, a collection of horror short stories featuring children. Twenty-six tales, most of them very entertaining. As with all collections, I liked some more than others, but the writing quality in all stories is very high, almost lyrical, and the author has a knack for writing entertaining, original stories, and setting the mood in just a few pages.

Some of the stories featured monster-kids, others kids who had turned into murderers, yet others featured veeeeery creepy kids. Some of the stories were creepier than others, but I liked the majority of them, and in general, I found that the quality of storytelling was very high.

I loved this book, and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys dark fiction / horror, and short stories.

Book Review Traveling Left of Center

Christie--Traveling Left of Center-printTitle: Traveling Left of Center and Other Stories
Author: Nancy Christie
Genre: Literary Fiction / Short Story Collection
Age Group: Adult
Rating: 4 stars
Purchase: Amazon
Review copy provided by Enchanted Book Promotions in exchange for an honest review.

There are some people who, whether by accident or design, find themselves traveling left of center. Unable or unwilling to seize control over their lives, they allow fate to dictate the path they take—often with disastrous results.

TRAVELING LEFT OF CENTER AND OTHER STORIES details characters in life situations for which they are emotionally or mentally unprepared. Their methods of coping range from the passive (“The Healer”) and the aggressive (“The Clock”) to the humorous (“Traveling Left of Center”) and hopeful (“Skating on Thin Ice”).

The eighteen stories in TRAVELING LEFT OF CENTER AND OTHER STORIES depict those types of situations, from the close calls to the disastrous. Not all the stories have happy endings—like life, sometimes things work out and sometimes they don’t.

In these stories, the characters’ choices—or non-choices—are their own. But the outcomes may not be what they anticipated or desired.

Will they have time to correct their course or will they crash?

In Traveling Left of Center, author Nancy Christie introduces the reader to a remarkable collection of short stories about people who, for some reason, find themselves traveling left of center. Each character has to deal with a situation for which they’re not prepared, and this book truly shows humans at their most vulnerable, and sometimes at their most powerful when they show true strength.

Some of the stories were emotionally heavy, and others were lighter, but they all did paint flawed characters, and the author did an incredible job portraying all characters’ emotions, from lonelinss to frustration to sadness. Often in short stories I find it hard to connect to the characters since we share little page time with them, but I had no such issues here.

The writing was excellent, and the author had no trouble transporting the reader into the world of these characters. I really enjoyed this collection of quality work, and look forward to reading more books by this author in the future.

Book Review: The Mistletoe Bride & Other Haunting Tales

18374015Title: The Mistletoe Bride & Other Haunting Tales
Author: Kate Mosse
Genre: Short Stories, Gothic, Ghosts

Age Group: Adult
Rating: 4 stars
Purchase: Amazon

A wonderfully atmospheric collection of stories from one of our most captivating writers, inspired by ghost stories, traditional folk tales and country legends from England and France. These tales are richly populated by spirits and ghosts seeking revenge; by grief-stricken women and haunted men coming to terms with their destiny – all rooted deep in the elemental landscapes of Sussex, Brittany and the Languedoc.
The collection will include The Mistletoe Bride, La Fille de Melisande, Red Letter Day, The Lending Library, The House on the Hill…

The Mistletoe Bride & Other Haunting Tales is, as the title suggests, a haunting collection of stories, most of them inspired by ghost stories and folklore. Some of the stories are slightly scary but I wouldn’t classify the collection as horror – most of the stories have a romantic, or sad touch, or a gothic-inspired feel. They’re mysterious, haunting, slightly eerie, but not all that creepy.

What I enjoyed the most was reading about the author’s inspiration – why she wrote the story, where she got her inspiration from, and so on. I really enjoyed “The Drowned Village”, and “The Mistletoe Bride”. Some of the stories were a little off, like “In The Theatre at Night”, “Why the Yew Tree Lives So Long”, they didn’t really seem to fit the collection, but I enjoyed them all the same.

The prose was slow, lyrical, and haunting, and fit with the stories. All in all, it was an enjoyable collection and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys gothic fiction.
